    Fabrication of polymer electronic boards by ultrasonic embossing and welding

    A method has been developed allowing fabrication of electronic boards from flexible polymer film by ultrasonic embossing and welding within seconds. A commercially available ultrasonic welding machine and micro patterned tools from aluminum are employed first to generate conductor paths on a flexible polymer film, in a further step, surface mounted devices are assembled and fixed on the flexible polymer film by a lid, and meanwhile electrical connected via a z axis conductive tape, both the molding of the lid and the bonding between the lid and electronic boards are implemented on an ultrasonic welding machine. Finally, the effectiveness of electrical interconnection is investigated at elevated temperature, humidity and bending load, exemplified by three simple circuit boards assembled with light-emitting diodes and resistors and capacitor separately, and the experimental results show that the electrical interconnection is effective, stable, and durable

    Puf6 primes 60S pre-ribosome nuclear export at low temperature

    Productive ribosomal RNA (rRNA) compaction during ribosome assembly necessitates establishing correct tertiary contacts between distant secondary structure elements. Here, we quantify the response of the yeast proteome to low temperature (LT), a condition where aberrant mis-paired RNA folding intermediates accumulate. We show that, at LT, yeast cells globally boost production of their ribosome assembly machinery. We find that the LT-induced assembly factor, Puf6, binds to the nascent catalytic RNA-rich subunit interface within the 60S pre-ribosome, at a site that eventually loads the nuclear export apparatus. Ensemble Förster resonance energy transfer studies show that Puf6 mimics the role of Mg2+ to usher a unique long-range tertiary contact to compact rRNA. At LT, puf6 mutants accumulate 60S pre-ribosomes in the nucleus, thus unveiling Puf6-mediated rRNA compaction as a critical temperature-regulated rescue mechanism that counters rRNA misfolding to prime export competence.ISSN:2041-172

    Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)The chemical composition of pectin production wastewater and its toxicity during biological treatment were investigated. Samples of wastewater from different steps of a pectin production wastewater biological treatment plant were investigated including the influent of the treatment (1), after denitrification tank (2), after anaerobic treatment (3) and final effluent (4). The conventional physicochemical characteristics of samples did not indicate wastewater toxicity. However, toxicity assessments carried out on Vibrio fischeri and Scenedesmus subspicatus indicated low EC50 values. The fractionation of the samples using an XAD resin showed that the toxicity was associated with the organic matter. Wastewater apparent molecular mass distributions were 14.3, 25.0, 24.4 and 29.6 kDa for samples 1-4, respectively.     Aging in 10 Minutes: Do Age Simulation Suits Mimic Physical Decline in Old Age? Comparing Experimental Data with Established Reference Data

However, empirical evidence that quantifies the simulated performance losses in established geriatric tests and compares those declines with reference data of older adults is scarce. Methods: In a standardized lab setting, we compared performance of N = 61 participants (46 middle-aged, 15 young adults) with and without age simulation suit, for example in the Timed Up and Go Test (+dual task), Short Physical Performance Battery, grip strength, and 30-Second-Chair- Standing Test. Additionally, we compared the results with suit to established reference values of older adults in different age groups. Results: Reduced performance was observed in both groups when wearing the suit, yet to different degrees dependent on the assessment and user age. For one, larger declines were observed in more challenging and complex tasks across age groups. In addition, comparisons with reference values revealed age-differential “instant aging” effects. Discussion: A simulated “fourth age,” where frailty and impairments are accumulating, was not reached in the majority of assessments, especially not among younger participants. In conclusion, existing age simulation suits may have some educational and empathy potential, but so far, they fail in simulating the age period with most serious functional loss
