    Treatment of ovarian cancer with surgery, short-course chemotherapy and whole abdominal radiation

    Background The primary aim was to induce a high number of pCR in early (FIGO IC, JIB + C)-and advanced (FIGO ffl—IV)—stage ovarian cancer with a surgery plus 4 cycles of cisplatin and meiphalan (PAMP) regimen. The second objective was to prevent relapse with WAR in patients in remission after chemotherapy. Patients and methods 218 eligible patients were treated after staging laparotomy with cisplatin 80 mg/sqm iv. on day 1 and melphalan 12 mg/sqm i.v. on day 2 q 4 weeks. Response was verified by second-look laparotomy. WAR was carried out with the open field technique on a linear accele rator (daily dose: 1.3 Gy, total dose: 29.9 Gy) in patients with pathological or clinicaJ CR or pathological PR with microscopical residual disease. Results 146/218 patients (67%, 95% CI: 61%-73%) responded to PAMIP: 56 (26%) achieved pCR, 24 (11%), cCR, 56 (26%) pPR and 10 (5%) cPR (c=clinical, p=pathological). Multivariate analyses revealed that in advanced stages (92 cases in remission), the achievement of pCR was the most important factor for longer time to failure (TIF) and survival. Only 5 1/118 (43%) patients in remission received WAR Early-stage patients <=55 years were more likely to have WAR than patients older than 55 years (77% vs. 23%; p= 0.02). Advanced-stage patients with cCR were less likely to be irradiated than patients with pCR or pPR (10% vs. 51%; p= 0.003). Toxicity of PAMP was acceptable with 10% of WHO grade 4 hematologic toxicity. Acute hematological toxicity of WAR caused interruption (3 3%) or incompleteness (3 3%) of irradiation in the majority of patients. Conclusions PAMP is an effective treatment for advanced ovarian cancer with a 67% response rate after 4 cycles. For the majority of patients in remission, WAR as a consolidation treatment was hardly feasible. For these patients new treatment modalities to consolidate remission are neede

    Polydisperse star polymer solutions

    We analyze the effect of polydispersity in the arm number on the effective interactions, structural correlations and the phase behavior of star polymers in a good solvent. The effective interaction potential between two star polymers with different arm numbers is derived using scaling theory. The resulting expression is tested against monomer-resolved molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the theoretical pair potential is in agreement with the simulation data in a much wider polydispersity range than other proposed potentials. We then use this pair potential as an input in a many-body theory to investigate polydispersity effects on the structural correlations and the phase diagram of dense star polymer solutions. In particular we find that a polydispersity of 10%, which is typical in experimental samples, does not significantly alter previous findings for the phase diagram of monodisperse solutions.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    An algorithm is proposed for denoising the signal induced by cosmic strings in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). A Bayesian approach is taken, based on modeling the string signal in the wavelet domain with generalized Gaussian distributions.     This review addresses genes differentially expressed in the mammary gland transcriptome during the progression of mammary carcinogenesis in BALB/c mice that are transgenic for the rat neu (ERBB2, or HER-2/neu) oncogene (BALB-neuT664V-E mice). The Ingenuity knowledge database was used to characterize four functional association networks whose hub genes are directly linked to inflammation (specifically, the genes encoding IL-1β, tumour necrosis factor, interferon-γ, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1/CC chemokine ligand-2) and are increasingly expressed during such progression. In silico meta-analysis in a human breast cancer dataset suggests that proinflammatory activation in the mammary glands of these mice reflects a general pattern of human breast cancer

    The merit of high-frequency data in portfolio allocation

    This paper addresses the open debate about the usefulness of high-frequency (HF) data in large-scale portfolio allocation. Daily covariances are estimated based on HF data of the S&P 500 universe employing a blocked realized kernel estimator. We propose forecasting covariance matrices using a multi-scale spectral decomposition where volatilities, correlation eigenvalues and eigenvectors evolve on different frequencies. In an extensive out-of-sample forecasting study, we show that the proposed approach yields less risky and more diversified portfolio allocations as prevailing methods employing daily data. These performance gains hold over longer horizons than previous studies have shown

    The TT-dependence (2- 400 K) of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic susceptibility, χ(T)\chi (T), and specific heat, Cv(T)C_{v}(T), of the normalnormal antiferromagnetic (AFM) spinel ZnCr2_{2}O4_{4} and the spin-glass (SG) Zn1x_{1-x}Cdx_{x}Cr2_{2}O4_{4} (x=0.05,0.10x=0.05,0.10) is reported. These systems behave as a strongly frustrated AFM and SG with % T_{N} TG12 \approx T_{G}\approx 12 K and -400 K ΘCW500\gtrsim \Theta_{CW}\gtrsim -500 K. At high-TT the EPR intensity follows the χ(T)\chi (T) and the gg-value is TT-independent. The linewidth broadens as the temperature is lowered, suggesting the existence of short range AFM correlations in the paramagnetic phase. For ZnCr2_{2}O4_{4} the EPR intensity and χ(T)\chi (T) decreases below 90 K and 50 K, respectively. These results are discussed in terms of nearest-neighbor Cr3+^{3+} (S =3/2=3/2%) spin-coupled pairs with an exchange coupling of J/k| J/k| \approx 50 K. The appearance of small resonance modes for T17T\lesssim 17 K, the observation of a sharp drop in χ(T)\chi (T) and a strong peak in Cv(T)C_{v}(T) at TN=12T_{N}=12 K confirms, as previously reported, the existence of long range AFM correlations in the low-TT phase. A comparison with recent neutron diffraction experiments that found a near dispersionless excitation at 4.5 meV for TTNT\lesssim T_{N} and a continuous gapless spectrum for TTNT\gtrsim T_{N}, is also given.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 Table.
