    Oblique Convergence in the Himalayas of Western Nepal Deduced from Preliminary Results of GPS Measurements

    A GPS network consisting of 29 sites was installed in central and western Nepal, with measurements taken in 1995 and partial remeasurements in 1997. Data suggest 15 +/−5 mm/yr of N180° convergence between the Higher Himalayas and India, a result that is consistent with N‐S shortening across the arcuate shape of the Nepalese Himalayas and an oblique underthrusting of the Indian crust below the High Himalayas of western Nepal. A 4 +/−3 mm/year E‐W extension and deviation of the principal shortening axes are inferred east of 83°E, where Quaternary faults (Darma‐Bari Gad fault system and Thakkhola graben) delineate a crustal wedge. This wedge is located on the SE projection of the Karakorum fault and may segment the Himalayan thrust belt. The convergence between the outer belt of western Nepal and India is less than 3 mm/yr, an attenuation consistent with creep on a dislocation locked beneath the Lesser Himalayas. A preliminary model suggests that this N 120°E striking dislocation is affected by a 19 mm/yr thrust component and a 7 mm/yr right lateral component

    Current status of the verification and processing system GALILEE-1 for evaluated data

    International audienceThis paper describes the current status of GALILÉE-1 that is the new verification and processing system for evaluated data, developed at CEA. It consists of various components respectively dedicated to read/write the evaluated data whatever the format is, to diagnose inconsistencies in the evaluated data and to provide continuous-energy and multigroup data as well as probability tables for transport and depletion codes. All these components are written in C++ language and share the same objects. Cross-comparisons with other processing systems (NJOY, CALENDF or PREPRO) are systematically carried out at each step in order to fully master possible discrepancies. Some results of such comparisons are provided

    Asymmetry to symmetry transition of Fano line-shape: Analytical derivation

    An analytical derivation of Fano line-shape asymmetry ratio has been presented here for a general case. It is shown that Fano line-shape becomes less asymmetric as \q is increased and finally becomes completely symmetric in the limiting condition of q equal to infinity. Asymmetry ratios of Fano line-shapes have been calculated and are found to be in good consonance with the reported expressions for asymmetry ratio as a function of Fano parameter. Application of this derivation is also mentioned for explanation of asymmetry to symmetry transition of Fano line-shape in quantum confined silicon nanostructures.Comment: 3 figures, Latex files, Theoretica

    Investigation of the 6He cluster structures

    The 4He+2n and t+t clustering of the 6He ground state were investigated by means of the transfer reaction 6He(p,t)4He at 25 MeV/nucleon. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics at GANIL with the SPEG spectrometer coupled to the MUST array. Experimental data for the transfer reaction were analyzed by a DWBA calculation including the two neutrons and the triton transfer. The couplings to the 6He --> 4He + 2n breakup channels were taken into account with a polarization potential deduced from a coupled-discretized-continuum channels analysis of the 6He+1H elastic scattering measured at the same time. The influence on the calculations of the 4He+t exit potential and of the triton sequential transfer is discussed. The final calculation gives a spectroscopic factor close to one for the 4He+2n configuration as expected. The spectroscopic factor obtained for the t+t configuration is much smaller than the theoretical predictions.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted in PR

    Present-day uplift of the western Alps

    International audienceCollisional mountain belts grow as a consequence of continental plate convergence and eventuallydisappear under the combined effects of gravitational collapse and erosion. Using a decade ofGPS data, we show that the western Alps are currently characterized by zero horizontal velocityboundary conditions, offering the opportunity to investigate orogen evolution at the time ofcessation of plate convergence. We find no significant horizontal motion within the belt, but GPS andlevelling measurements independently show a regional pattern of uplift reaching ~2.5 mm/yr in thenorthwestern Alps. Unless a low viscosity crustal root under the northwestern Alps locally enhancesthe vertical response to surface unloading, the summed effects of isostatic responses to erosion andglaciation explain at most 60% of the observed uplift rates. Rock-uplift rates corrected from transientglacial isostatic adjustment contributions likely exceed erosion rates in the northwestern Alps. In theabsence of active convergence, the observed surface uplift must result from deep-seated processes

    Raman spectra and structural analysis in ZrOxNy thin films

    Raman spectroscopy has been used as a local probe to characterize the structural evolution of magnetron-sputtered decorative zirconium oxynitride ZrOxNy films which result from an increase of reactive gas flow in the deposition The lines shapes, the frequency position and widths of the Raman bands show a systematic change as a function of the reactive gas flow (a mixture of both oxygen and nitrogen). The as-deposited zirconium nitride film presents a Raman spectrum with the typical broadened bands, due to the disorder induced by N vacancies. The recorded Raman spectrum of the zirconium oxide film is typical of the monoclinic phase of ZrO2, which is shown also by X-ray diffraction.     Structure of low-lying states of 10,11^{10,11}C from proton elastic and inelastic scattering

    NESTER PTH, expérience GANIL, équipement SISSITo probe the ground state and transition densities, elastic and inelastic scattering on a proton target were measured in inverse kinematics for the unstable 10^{10}C and 11^{11}C nuclei at 45.3 and 40.6 MeV/nucleon, respectively. The detection of the recoil proton was performed by the MUST telescope array, in coincidence with a wall of scintillators for the quasiprojectile. The differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering to the first excited states are compared to the optical model calculations performed within the framework of the microscopic nucleon-nucleus Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux potential. Elastic scattering is sensitive to the matter-root-mean square radius found to be 2.42±\pm0.1 and 2.33±\pm0.1 fm, for 10,11^{10,11}C, respectively. The transition densities from cluster and mean-field models are tested, and the cluster model predicts the correct order of magnitude of cross sections for the transitions of both isotopes. Using the Bohr-Mottelson prescription, a profile for the 10^{10}C transition density from the 0+0^+ ground to the 21+2_1^+ state is deduced from the data. The corresponding neutron transition matrix element is extracted: Mn=5.51±\pm1.09 fm2^2

    The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio
