    Fractional Contribution of Wildland Firefighters’ Personal Protective Equipment on Physiological Strain

    [EN] Activities performed by wildland firefighters are carried out wearing a personal protective equipment (PPE). Although the PPE protects workers from a wide variety of hazards, it may increase their physiological response and limit their performance. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the protective clothing (PPC) and the rest of the PPE elements (i.e., helmet, neck shroud, gloves, goggles, and mid-calf leather boots) on the wildland firefighters’ thermophysiological response during a moderate- intense exercise. Six male wildland firefighters performed, in a counterbalanced order, a 120 min graded exercise test wearing three different clothing configurations: (i) a traditional short sports gear (SG), (ii) a PPC, and (iii) a complete firefighters’ PPE. Trials were conducted on separate days at the same time of the day (12:00–15:00 h) and under climate-controlled conditions (∼30◦C and ∼30% relative humidity). Heart rate, respiratory gas exchange, gastrointestinal and skin temperature, blood lactate concentration were recorded throughout the tests. Additionally, parameters of heat balance were estimated. Exercise time was shorter (p < 0.001) wearing the PPE (62.4 ± 13.3 min) than with the PPC (115.5 ± 5.0 min) and SG (118.2 ± 20.7 min). The increment of gastrointestinal temperature with the PPE (1.8 ± 0.3◦C) was greater (p < 0.05) than the observed in PPC (1.2 ± 0.6◦C) and SG (1.0 ± 0.2◦C). The use of PPC increased (p < 0.05) subjects’ metabolic demand and skin temperature versus SG during the last 20 min of the test. The sweat retention in the PPE (1,045.7 ± 214.7 g) and PPC (978.3 ± 330.6 g) was significantly higher than that obtained in the SG (510.0 ± 210.0 g). Sweat efficiency decreased (p < 0.05) in the following order: PPE (45.6 ± 18.3%), PPC (64.3 ± 7.8%), and SG (79.3 ± 7.0%). These results highlight the importance of the PPE elements in the subjects’ thermal strain. The reduction in the sweat evaporation produced by the PPE, together with the ensemble mass caused a substantial increase in the subjects’ thermophysiological response.     Application of soil amendments and their effect in the growth of heliconia

    The Heliconias have a great potential as a cut flower and for this reason an adequate management of the crop is important. The objective of this research was the application of soil amendments (Biol and superabsorbent polymers - SAP) and the analysis on their effect in the growth of Heliconia psittacorum cv. Tropica. An experiment was established using a completely randomized design with four treatments and five repetitions: SAP (1 g plant-1), biol (20 mL plant-1) + SAP (1 g plant-1), biol (20 mL plant-1) and one control (without application). A 20 cm rhizome was planted per pot and were evaluated the height of the plant, the number of leaves, the leaf area and the number of shoots were measured. The analysis of variance did not show statistical differences (p ≤ 0.05) between treatments for the variables of the height of the plant, the leaf area and the number of shoots, but statistical differences were found for the variable number of leaves (p ≤ 0.05), and the best treatments were Biol, SAP, and Biol + SAP. With the application of the biol and SAP amendments, it was not possible to increase the plant height, the leaf area and the number of Heliconia shoots. Regarding the application of SAP to the not found significant results in Heliconia, it is expected that treatments with SAP show a better effect in the dry season

    High-precision analysis of binary stars with planets. I. Searching for condensation temperature trends in the HD 106515 system

    Aims. We explore for the first time the probable chemical signature of planet formation in the remarkable binary system HD 106515. Star A hosts a massive long-period planet with ∼9 MJup detected by radial velocity, while there is no planet detected at the B star. We also refine stellar and planetary parameters by using non-solar-scaled opacities when modelling the stars. Methods. We carried out a simultaneous determination of stellar parameters and abundances by applying for the first time non-solar-scaled opacities in this binary system, in order to reach the highest possible precision. We used a line-by-line strictly differential approach, using the Sun and then the A star as reference. Stellar parameters were determined by imposing an ionization and excitation balance of Fe lines, with an updated version of the FUNDPAR program, ATLAS12 model atmospheres, and the MOOG code. Opacitiesfor an arbitrary composition were calculated through the opacity sampling method. The chemical patterns were compared with solar-twins condensation temperature Tc trends from the literature and also mutually between both stars. We take the opportunity to compareand discuss the results of the classical solar-scaled method and the high-precision procedure applied here. Results. Stars A and B in the binary system HD 106515 do not seem to be depleted in refractory elements, which is different when comparing the Sun with solar twins. The terrestrial planet formation would have been less efficient in the stars of this binary system. Together with HD 80606/7, this is the second binary system that does not seem to present a (terrestrial) signature of planet formation, when both systems host an eccentric giant planet. This is in agreement with numerical simulations, where the early dynamical evolution of eccentric giant planets clears out most of the possible terrestrial planets in the inner zone. We refined the stellar mass, radius, and age for both stars and found a notable difference of ∼78% in R compared to previous works. We also refined the planet mass to mp sin i = 9.08 ± 0.20 MJup, which differs by ∼6% compared with the literature. In addition, we showed that the non-solar-scaled solution is not compatible with the classical solar-scaled method, and some abundance differences are comparable to non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) or galactic chemical evolution (GCE) effects especially when using the Sun as reference. Therefore, we encourage the use of non-solar-scaled opacities in high-precision studies such as the detection of Tc trends.Fil: Saffe, Carlos.     Analysis of Arabidopsis SYT1 mutants and chimeras reveal insights about its dynamic and function on ER-PM MCS.

    The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) extends throughout the cell and forms Membrane Contact Sites (MCS) with other organelles. MCS are essential for lipid transport, calcium signaling and organelle communication. In plants, ER-Plasma Membrane (ER-PM) MCS contain some proteins which, while being anchored to the ER, can attach with the PM through electrostatic interactions. Arabidopsis thaliana SYT1 is one of the most studied ER-PM tethers in plants, as it contributes to both biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. To study SYT1 dynamics and function, our group has generated Arabidopsis stable lines expressing mutant versions of SYT1, to remove SYT1 Ca2+ binding site (SYT1MutC2), and to cause a blockage of the SMP hydrophobic channel (SYT1MutSMP). Additionally, we generated chimeric versions of SYT1, switching the SMP domain by its analogue of human E-Syt1 and TMEM24 proteins (SYT1ESYT1 and SYT1TMEM24 respectively). Our results demonstrate that both SYT1MutC2 and SYT1MutSMP lines complement the cold and salt stress phenotypes of the syt1 mutant. On the other side, SYT1ESYT1 and SYTTMEM24 chimeras do not complement such phenotypes, which confirms the essential role of SYT1 SMP domain in cold and salt stress tolerance, as well as the functional differences of SYT1 SMP domain compared to E-Syt1 and TMEM24 SMP domains. Moreover, confocal analysis of SYT1MutC2 line evidenced an altered dynamic of SYT1 in terms of cortical ER relocalization upon prolonged salt stress treatment. Altogether, these findings indicate that SYT1 Ca2+ binding site is not essential for SYT1 salt stress tolerance, but influences SYT1 dynamics on salt-induced ER-PM MCS expansion

    Physical and chemical properties of soils irrigated with vinasses for the cultivation of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in the central region of Veracruz, Mexico

    Objective: To evaluate the physical and chemical properties of a soil with vinasse application (two years) (V), compared to a soil without vinasse (W/V). Design/methodology/approach: In both agroecosystems, the evaluated parameters were texture, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), nitrates (NO3) and total nitrogen (TN) according to standardized methods in NOM-021-SEMARNAT-2000. Results: There were no significant changes (p&gt;0.05) in the pH and electrical conductivity, however, the application of vinasse significantly increased (p˂0.05) the content of TN (1.52%), K (112.00 mg L-1) and OM (4.52%) in relation to soils W/V (0.78%, 25.60 mg L-1, 7.40 mg L-1, 2.75%, respectively). Limitations on study/implications: In Veracruz state, there are few studies that allow knowing the contributions, and physical and chemical effects on soils irrigated with vinasses. Findings/conclusions: Even though, the vinasse used showed a positive effect on the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil (V), the mineral fertilization program must be reformulated to increase the concentration of potassium and phosphorus in soils with silt loam texture. In addition, it is recommended to adjust and normalize the dose of N that vinasse can provide instead of conventional fertilizers.     Pronóstico de la fluctuación poblacional del minador de la hoja de crisantemo liriomyza huidobrensis blanchard (diptera: agromyzidae) mediante modelos de series de tiempo

    The present study had the objective of modelling population fluctuation of chrysanthemum leaf miner (Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard), using the Box &amp; Jenkins method, in order to find prediction models, which could represent and adequately predict population density of the insect at its larval stage. The work was carried out in two four-month crop cycles. The number of insects was recorded periodically every two days, resulting in 61 observations for each crop cycle. The number of live larvae was registered by reading date, obtaining two time series. The first 55 observations of each series were analyzed to set the model according to the Box &amp; Jenkins’ method, and the six final observations helped to validate the prediction capacity of the model found. In the process of identifying the model for the representation of each of the observed series, their transformation was tested, finding for series 1 that the transformation with square root had the most adequate fit, and for series 2, the transformation of Box-Cox with power (0.387455) was the most adequate. In both series, the autocorrelations (FAC) showed stationarity, and partial autocorrelations (FACP) were interrupted in autocorrelation 1. The estimated model for series 1 was Yt=0.246842 + 0.978041 Yt-1 , and for series 2, it was Yt= 0.283874 + 0.985939 Yt-1. The testing of the model fitted the data well, obtaining white noise in the residuals of FAC and FACP of the estimated models. Two stationary models of autoregressive time series of the AR (1) type were generated, representing the observed series of L. huidobrensis, well fitting the true behaviour of their populations and achieving to satisfactorily forecast future values of the insect population fluctuation.El presente trabajo se realizó con el propósito de modelar la fluctuación poblacional del minador de la hoja de crisantemo Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) a fin de encontrar modelos de predicción con el método de Box &amp; Jenkins que pudieran representar y predecir la densidad de población del insecto en su estado de larva. Se trabajó en dos ciclos de cultivo con duración de cuatro meses cada uno obteniéndose dos poblaciones de insectos. El número de insectos se registró periódicamente cada dos días obteniendo 61 observaciones para cada ciclo de cultivo; por fecha de lectura se anotó el número de larvas vivas; teniendo así dos series de tiempo. Las primeras 55 observaciones de cada serie se analizaron para la obtención del modelo de acuerdo a la metodología de Box &amp; Jenkins y las seis observaciones finales ayudaron a validar la capacidad de predicción del modelo encontrado. En el proceso de identificación del modelo para la representación de cada una de las series observadas se probaron transformaciones de éstas, siendo los ajustes más adecuados para la serie 1 la transformación con raíz cuadrada, y para la serie 2 la transformación de Box-Cox con potencia (0.387455). En ambas series las autocorrelaciones (FAC) denotaron estacionaridad y las autocorrelaciones parciales (FACP) se interrumpieron en la autocorrelación 1. El modelo estimado para la serie 1 fue Yt = 0.246842 + 0.978041 Yt-1 y para la serie 2 fue Yt = 0.283874 + 0.985939 Yt-1. La verificación del modelo ajustó bien los datos al obtener ruido blanco en los residuales de la FAC y FACP de los modelos estimados. Se generaron dos modelos estacionarios de series de tiempo autorregresivos del tipo AR (1) que representaron a las series observadas de L. huidobrensis, ajustandose bien al comportamiento real de sus poblaciones y logrando predecir satisfactoriamente valores de la fluctuación poblacional del insecto

    Preclinical research[Abstract] Specialized proresolving mediators and, in particular, 5(S), (6)R, 7-trihydroxyheptanoic acid methyl ester (BML-111) emerge as new therapeutic tools to prevent cardiac dysfunction and deleterious cardiac damage associated with myocarditis progression. The cardioprotective role of BML-111 is mainly caused by the prevention of increased oxidative stress and nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (NRF2) down-regulation induced by myocarditis.     Restauración del Patrimonio de la Universidad de Granada (I)

    La serie editorial de Cuadernos Técnicos del Patrimonio surge debido a la necesidad de dotar al Vicerrectorado de Extensión Universitaria de publicaciones que aborden aspectos patrimoniales en relación con cuestiones de carácter transversal y que sirvan de vehículo de difusión y diálogo de las distintas colecciones que conforman el rico acervo universitario. El objetivo es convertir estos Cuadernos en un espacio de reflexión y debate sobre temas relacionados con la conservación, la restauración, la gestión, la difusión y la puesta en valor de los bienes muebles e inmuebles de la Universidad de Granada en toda su amplitud. No se plantean con un enfoque exclusivamente local pues su intención es abrirse a distintas problemáticas patrimoniales y convertirse en un instrumento que integre estudios de carácter nacional e internacional. Asimismo, entendemos que al Patrimonio hay que afrontarlo desde una perspectiva histórica pero también actual y en diálogo con la compleja realidad social

    Red de tutores del Programa de Acción Tutorial de la Facultad de Económicas (PATEC)

    El Plan de Acción Tutorial (PAT, PATEC en la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales) se viene desarrollando en la Universidad de Alicante (UA) desde el curso 2005-2006. Tras más de una década de su puesta en marcha en la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, el PATEC se ha ido consolidando año a año y, aunque son muchas sus fortalezas, existen aún ciertas debilidades que persisten a las que hay que dar respuesta. Para ello, en el curso 2013-2014 surge la Red de Tutores del PATEC como un punto de encuentro en el que reflexionar sobre el funcionamiento del Programa. En el curso 2015-2016 su objetivo es doble. Por un lado, y continuando la labor que comenzó en el curso anterior referida a analizar experiencias de acción tutorial en otras universidades españolas, extraer las buenas prácticas que supongan un nuevo impulso para el PATEC.     Introduction: the aim of this study was to develop a surgical risk prediction model in patients undergoing anatomic lung resections from the registry of the Spanish Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery Group (GEVATS). Methods: data were collected from 3,533 patients undergoing anatomic lung resection for any diagnosis between December 20, 2016 and March 20, 2018. We defined a combined outcome variable: death or Clavien Dindo grade IV complication at 90 days after surgery. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed by logistic regression. Internal validation of the model was performed using resampling techniques. Results: the incidence of the outcome variable was 4.29% (95% CI 3.6-4.9). The variables remaining in the final logistic model were: age, sex, previous lung cancer resection, dyspnea (mMRC), right pneumonectomy, and ppo DLCO. The performance parameters of the model adjusted by resampling were: C-statistic 0.712 (95% CI 0.648-0.750), Brier score 0.042 and bootstrap shrinkage 0.854. Conclusions: the risk prediction model obtained from the GEVATS database is a simple, valid, and reliable model that is a useful tool for establishing the risk of a patient undergoing anatomic lung resection
