Early Records of the Episcopal Church in Southwestern Idaho, 1867-1916 : Silver City and DeLamar
The book is a transcription of old handwritten church registers from the mining towns of Silver City and DeLamar up in the Owyhee Mountains. Albertsons Library Special Collections holds the original church registers, which are now fragile and written in script that is often difficult to decipher.
Old church records like these are important because the State of Idaho did not begin compiling birth and death records until 1911. So before that date, church records (with baptisms, burials, etc.) are often the only vital records there are
Public perceptions of drinking water: A postal survey of residents with private water supplies
Background: In Canada, the legal responsibility for the condition of private water supplies,
including private wells and cisterns, rests with their owners. However, there are reports that
Canadians test these water supplies intermittently and that treatment of such water is uncommon.
An estimated 45% of all waterborne outbreaks in Canada involve non-municipal systems. An
understanding of the perceptions and needs of Canadians served by private water supplies is
essential, as it would enable public health professionals to better target public education and
drinking water policy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the public perceptions of private
water supplies in the City of Hamilton, Ontario (Canada), with the intent of informing public
education and outreach strategies within the population.
Methods: A cross-sectional postal survey of 246 residences with private water supplies was
conducted in May 2004. Questions pertained to the perceptions of water quality and alternative
water sources, water testing behaviours and the self-identified need for further information.
Results: Private wells, cisterns or both, were the source of household water for 71%, 16% and
13% of respondents, respectively. Although respondents rated their water quality highly, 80% also
had concerns with its safety. The most common concerns pertained to bacterial and chemical
contamination of their water supply and its potential negative effect on health. Approximately 56%
and 61% of respondents used in-home treatment devices and bottled water within their homes,
respectively, mainly due to perceived improvements in the safety and aesthetic qualities compared
to regular tap water. Testing of private water supplies was performed infrequently: 8% of
respondents tested at a frequency that meets current provincial guidelines. Two-thirds of
respondents wanted more information on various topics related to private water supplies. Flyers
and newspapers were the two media reported most likely to be used.
Conclusion: Although respondents rated their water quality highly, the majority had concerns
regarding the water from their private supply, and the use of bottled water and water treatment
devices was extensive. The results of this study suggest important lines of inquiry and provide
support and input for public education programs, particularly those related to private water testing,
in this population
The effect of digital signage on shoppers' behavior: the role of the evoked experience
This paper investigates the role of digital signage as experience provider in retail spaces. The findings of a survey-based field experiment demonstrate that digital signage content high on sensory cues evokes affective experience and strengthens customers’ experiential processing route. In contrast, digital signage messages high on “features and benefits” information evoke intellectual experience and strengthen customers’ deliberative processing route. The affective experience is more strongly associated with the attitude towards the ad and the approach behavior towards the advertiser than the intellectual experience. The effect of an ad high on sensory cues on shoppers’ approach to the advertiser is stronger for first-time shoppers, and therefore important in generating loyalty. The findings indicate that the design of brand-related informational cues broadcast over digital in-store monitors affects shoppers’ information processing. The cues evoke sensory and affective experiences and trigger deliberative processes that lead to attitude construction and finally elicit approach behavior towards the advertisers
Assessing the Role of Spin Noise in the Precision Timing of Millisecond Pulsars
We investigate rotational spin noise (referred to as timing noise) in
non-accreting pulsars: millisecond pulsars, canonical pulsars, and magnetars.
Particular attention is placed on quantifying the strength and non-stationarity
of timing noise in millisecond pulsars because the long-term stability of these
objects is required to detect nanohertz gravitational radiation. We show that a
single scaling law is sufficient to characterize timing noise in millisecond
and canonical pulsars while the same scaling law underestimates the levels of
timing noise in magnetars. The scaling law, along with a detailed study of the
millisecond pulsar B1937+21, leads us to conclude that timing noise is latent
in most millisecond pulsars and will be measurable in many objects when better
arrival time estimates are obtained over long data spans. The sensitivity of a
pulsar timing array to gravitational radiation is strongly affected by any
timing noise. We conclude that detection of proposed gravitational wave
backgrounds will require the analysis of more objects than previously suggested
over data spans that depend on the spectra of both the gravitational wave
background and of the timing noise. It is imperative to find additional
millisecond pulsars in current and future surveys in order to reduce the

Transfer Student Peer Mentorship Initiative
Transfer students have unique needs that differ from those of incoming freshmen. The TRAM Transfer Student Mentorship Program connects incoming transfer students with students who also began their VCU journey as transfer students. Through a one-on-one relationship with a trained mentor, transfer students who participate in this program will access guidance and information to help them navigate the university and its resources, programs, and culture
Schools and the legacy of hybrid buildings
Learning from the past, collecting data on the Italian condition of school buildings, our R&D work aimed to question the design process of school buildings in Italy introducing an innovative model of school, which turned the conventional and isolated, mono-functional and rigid school buildings into interior urban public spaces and porous community hubs to empower the communities around them and to become manifestos of sustainability. Through some built examples of school buildings designed in Italy, the paper discusses the outputs and impact of the introduction of new design layouts, participation projects with different stakeholders and sustainability. The research has guided the introduction of the new Italian guide-lines for school building design, approved in 2013. A future perspective to be explored is the reconsideration of exporting the strategy in different contexts and to design reconsider other public infrastructures turning the mono-functional use of public buildings into hybrid and multifunctional ones
Embedding experiential learning in HE sport coaching courses: An action research study
Despite recommendations imploring coach educators to utilise experiential learning, analyses of how this has been implemented are sparse. This study analyses the integration of experiential learning within a UK Higher Education Institution (HEI) context. Student coaches were provided with coaching opportunities with local school-children. Data were collected over three years through student interviews, coach educator reflections and discussions with a critical friend. Experiential learning presented two key challenges; 1) dealing with difficult emotions and competence awareness by students and the coach educator; 2) ensuring children received appropriate coaching practice. The integration of mediated pedagogical strategies helped overcome these problems
Mobile blogs in language learning: making the most of informal and situated learning opportunities
The application of mobile technologies to learning has the potential to facilitate the active participation of learners in the creation and delivery of content. They can also provide a powerful connection between a variety of formal and informal learning contexts and can help to build a community of learners. However these versatile tools present challenges to educators and learners alike. The paper discusses the pedagogical challenges that result from the introduction of mobile technologies in language learning in the context of an intensive week of study abroad. We describe and evaluate a pilot project that uses mobile blogging to promote a constructivist, situated and informal learning experience of the foreign language and culture based on theories of active learning. We aim to encourage interaction and a sense of community among learners outside formal educational environments and in different locations as we ask them to engage with the foreign culture by capturing, sharing and reflecting on their experiences for their peers
