'Drop' model in the fashion industry: Examining retail strategy and long-term sustainability effects

From a retail giant, Amazon, to luxury fashion brands like Gucci and Burberry, 'drops' as a marketing strategy have been adopted widely by the fashion industry in recent years (Larsson, 2020). The new innovation, the 'drop' model is a brand's strategy that consists of releasing a new product or collection at a specific time in limited quantities (Elven, 2018). Product drops impose a sense of urgency and scarcity to increase sales by making customers buy the product right away at full prices. It also creates 'brand excitement as a method to build consumer affinity' (Larsson, 2020). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the drop model on fashion brands' business strategies and sustainability. Three research objectives were established: (a) to investigate the fashion brands' current business strategies for the 'drop model' including product development, marketing communications, and supply chain,(b) to examine whether the drop model has any positive implications for sustainability, and (c) to evaluate how the drop model could be compared with traditional business models such as fast fashion and how fashion brands should move forward in the coming years. To achieve the research objectives, content analysis, and a case study approach were adopted. I examined selected cases that were useful in supplying insight into a topic of interest and in leading to a better understanding of a research phenomenon. Based on the result of the content analysis, I selected three sample brands that have adopted the drop model. Within the case study, each sample brand's drop model strategies in terms of product development, marketing communications, and supply chain were be analyzed using content analysis and other unobtrusive observation measures. The sample brands' websites and social media sites were also investigated. Conclusions from my research revealed the 'drop model' promotes more sustainable practices by eliminating overproduction in the fashion industry. The drop model generates exclusivity, demand, excitement, and incentive in the product market. Long-term sustainability through the retail strategy of the drop model could be achieved if applied properly with high-quality products and lines.Lew Wentz FoundationDesign, Housing and Merchandisin

Examining Empathy and Advocacy Competencies in Professional School Counselors

In this quantitative study, the relationship between levels of empathy and perceptions of advocacy competencies among a national sample of professional school counselors are examined. Results of this study indicate there is a statistically significant relationship between school counselor’s level of empathy according to the Empathy Assessment Index (EAI) and level of advocacy according to the Advocacy Competencies Self-Assessment (ACSA). Paradoxical activation of the protein kinase-transcription factor ERK5 by ERK5 kinase inhibitors.

The dual protein kinase-transcription factor, ERK5, is an emerging drug target in cancer and inflammation, and small-molecule ERK5 kinase inhibitors have been developed. However, selective ERK5 kinase inhibitors fail to recapitulate ERK5 genetic ablation phenotypes, suggesting kinase-independent functions for ERK5. Here we show that ERK5 kinase inhibitors cause paradoxical activation of ERK5 transcriptional activity mediated through its unique C-terminal transcriptional activation domain (TAD). Using the ERK5 kinase inhibitor, Compound 26 (ERK5-IN-1), as a paradigm, we have developed kinase-active, drug-resistant mutants of ERK5. With these mutants, we show that induction of ERK5 transcriptional activity requires direct binding of the inhibitor to the kinase domain. This in turn promotes conformational changes in the kinase domain that result in nuclear translocation of ERK5 and stimulation of gene transcription. This shows that both the ERK5 kinase and TAD must be considered when assessing the role of ERK5 and the effectiveness of anti-ERK5 therapeutics

A plot twist: the continuing story of VCSELs at AOC

ABSTRACT During a year of substantial consolidation in the VCSEL industry, Honeywell sold their VCSEL Optical Products Division, which has now officially changed its name to Advanced Optical Components (AOC). Both manufacture and applied research continue, however. Some of the developments of the past year are discussed in this paper. They include advances in the understanding of VCSEL degradation physics, substantial improvements in long-wavelength VCSEL performance, and continuing progress in manufacturing technology. In addition, higher speed serial communications products, at 10 gigabits and particularly at 4 gigabits per second, have shown faster than predicted growth. We place these technologies and AOC's approach to them in a market perspective, along with other emerging applications

Pretest probability assessment derived from attribute matching

BACKGROUND: Pretest probability (PTP) assessment plays a central role in diagnosis. This report compares a novel attribute-matching method to generate a PTP for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We compare the new method with a validated logistic regression equation (LRE). METHODS: Eight clinical variables (attributes) were chosen by classification and regression tree analysis of a prospectively collected reference database of 14,796 emergency department (ED) patients evaluated for possible ACS. For attribute matching, a computer program identifies patients within the database who have the exact profile defined by clinician input of the eight attributes. The novel method was compared with the LRE for ability to produce PTP estimation <2% in a validation set of 8,120 patients evaluated for possible ACS and did not have ST segment elevation on ECG. 1,061 patients were excluded prior to validation analysis because of ST-segment elevation (713), missing data (77) or being lost to follow-up (271). RESULTS: In the validation set, attribute matching produced 267 unique PTP estimates [median PTP value 6%, 1(st)–3(rd )quartile 1–10%] compared with the LRE, which produced 96 unique PTP estimates [median 24%, 1(st)–3(rd )quartile 10–30%]. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 0.74 (95% CI 0.65 to 0.82) for the attribute matching curve and 0.68 (95% CI 0.62 to 0.77) for LRE. The attribute matching system categorized 1,670 (24%, 95% CI = 23–25%) patients as having a PTP < 2.0%; 28 developed ACS (1.7% 95% CI = 1.1–2.4%). The LRE categorized 244 (4%, 95% CI = 3–4%) with PTP < 2.0%; four developed ACS (1.6%, 95% CI = 0.4–4.1%). CONCLUSION: Attribute matching estimated a very low PTP for ACS in a significantly larger proportion of ED patients compared with a validated LRE

The level of claudin-7 is reduced as an early event in colorectal carcinogenesis

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Compromised epithelial barriers are found in dysplastic tissue of the gastrointestinal tract. Claudins are transmembrane proteins important for tight junctions. Claudins regulate the paracellular transport and are crucial for maintaining a functional epithelial barrier. Down-regulation of the oncogenic serine protease, matriptase, induces leakiness in epithelial barriers both <it>in vivo </it>and <it>in vitro</it>. We found in an <it>in-silico </it>search tight co-regulation between <it>matriptase </it>and <it>claudin-7 </it>expression. We have previously shown that the <it>matriptase </it>expression level decreases during colorectal carcinogenesis. In the present study we investigated whether <it>claudin-7 </it>expression is likewise decreased during colorectal carcinogenesis, thereby causing or contributing to the compromised epithelial leakiness of dysplastic tissue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The mRNA level of <it>claudin-7 </it>(CLDN7) was determined in samples from 18 healthy individuals, 100 individuals with dysplasia and 121 colorectal cancer patients using quantitative real time RT-PCR. In addition, immunohistochemical stainings were performed on colorectal adenomas and carcinomas, to confirm the mRNA findings.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A 2.7-fold reduction in the <it>claudin-7 </it>mRNA level was found when comparing the biopsies from healthy individuals with the biopsies of carcinomas (p < 0.001). Reductions in the <it>claudin-7 </it>mRNA levels were also detected in mild/moderate dysplasia (p < 0.001), severe dysplasia (p < 0.01) and carcinomas (p < 0.01), compared to a control sample from the same individual. The decrease at mRNA level was confirmed at the protein level by immunohistochemical stainings.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results show that the <it>claudin-7 </it>mRNA level is decreased already as an early event in colorectal carcinogenesis, probably contributing to the compromised epithelial barrier in adenomas.</p

Ethnic-Racial Socialization in Early Childhood: The Implications of Color-Consciousness and Colorblindness for Prejudice Development

This chapter outlines how early childhood teachers can bring children into conversations surrounding race and racism by drawing on literature on how parents of color discuss these topics. Although educators’ practices surrounding race and racism remain largely unexplored, decades of developmental psychological research indicate that parents of color engage in ethnic-racial socialization practices that are beneficial for children (Hughes et al., 2006). The established dimensions of parental ethnic-racial socialization include (1) cultural socialization, or teaching children about their ethnic heritage and instilling ethnic pride; (2) preparation for bias, or teaching children about racism and preparing them to face discrimination; (3) promotion of mistrust, or warning children about the need to distance themselves from other racial groups; and (4) egalitarianism, or emphasizing the similarities between and equality of all races (Hughes et al. 2006). One consideration to take into account from a developmental perspective is that children’s level of cognitive development impacts how they interpret messages about race. This chapter draws a link between parental ethnic-racial socialization and extends this body of work to school settings, with a focus on teachers.
