Dallas Bower: a producer for television's early years, 1936-39
Having worked in the film industry as a sound technician and then director, Dallas Bower (1907-99) was appointed in 1936 as one of two senior producers at the start of the BBC Television service. Over the next three years Bower produced as well as directed many ground-breaking live programmes, including the opening-day broadcast on 2 November 1936; the BBC Television Demonstration Film (1937, his only surviving pre-war production); a modern-dress Julius Caesar (1938), in uniforms suggestive of a Fascist disctatorship; Act II of Tristan and Isolde (1938); Patrick Hamilton’s play Rope (1939), utilising extended single camera-shots camera-shots; numerous ballets, among them Checkmate (1938); and ambitious outside broadcasts from the film studios at Denham and Pinewood.
Developing the working practices of producing for the theatre, film industry and radio, Bower was a key figure in defining the role of the creative television producer at the start of the medium. Among his innovations, according to his unpublished autobiographical fragment ‘Playback’ (written 1995), was the introduction of a drawn studio plan for the four cameras employed in all live broadcasts from Alexandra Palace.
Using Bower’s writings (among them his 1936 book Plan for Cinema), his BECTU History Project interview, the BBC Written Archives and contemporary industry coverage, this article reconstructs the early development of the role of staff television producer in order to consider the questions of autonomy, agency and institutional constraints at the BBC in the pre-war years
Primary Cardiac Synovial Sarcoma: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature
Synovial sarcoma comprises approximately 10% of all soft tissue sarcoma diagnoses; a primary synovial sarcoma of the myocardium is exceedingly rare. There have been very few cases reported in the literature thus far. With the identification of the characteristic and diagnostic chromosomal abnormality t(X;18), this may become an increasingly recognized entity. Our report adds to the limited published cases of primary cardiac synovial sarcoma with the characteristic t(X;18). Further elucidation of the effects of this translocation on the cell cycle may lead to directed therapies in the future
Involvement of Noradrenergic Neurotransmission in the Stress- but not Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement of Extinguished Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Mice: Role for β-2 Adrenergic Receptors
The responsiveness of central noradrenergic systems to stressors and cocaine poses norepinephrine as a potential common mechanism through which drug re-exposure and stressful stimuli promote relapse. This study investigated the role of noradrenergic systems in the reinstatement of extinguished cocaine-induced conditioned place preference by cocaine and stress in male C57BL/6 mice. Cocaine- (15 mg/kg, i.p.) induced conditioned place preference was extinguished by repeated exposure to the apparatus in the absence of drug and reestablished by a cocaine challenge (15 mg/kg), exposure to a stressor (6-min forced swim (FS); 20–25°C water), or administration of the α-2 adrenergic receptor (AR) antagonists yohimbine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or BRL44408 (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.). To investigate the role of ARs, mice were administered the nonselective β-AR antagonist, propranolol (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.), the α-1 AR antagonist, prazosin (1, 2 mg/kg, i.p.), or the α-2 AR agonist, clonidine (0.03, 0.3 mg/kg, i.p.) before reinstatement testing. Clonidine, prazosin, and propranolol failed to block cocaine-induced reinstatement. The low (0.03 mg/kg) but not high (0.3 mg/kg) clonidine dose fully blocked FS-induced reinstatement but not reinstatement by yohimbine. Propranolol, but not prazosin, blocked reinstatement by both yohimbine and FS, suggesting the involvement of β-ARs. The β-2 AR antagonist ICI-118551 (1 mg/kg, i.p.), but not the β-1 AR antagonist betaxolol (10 mg/kg, i.p.), also blocked FS-induced reinstatement. These findings suggest that stress-induced reinstatement requires noradrenergic signaling through β-2 ARs and that cocaine-induced reinstatement does not require AR activation, even though stimulation of central noradrenergic neurotransmission is sufficient to reinstate
An Unusual Case of Systemic Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor with Successful Treatment with ALK-Inhibitor
Systemic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an exceedingly rare entity. A 45-year-old Hispanic female presented with a 6-month history of left-sided thigh pain, low back pain, and generalized weakness. PET/CT scan revealed abnormal activity in the liver, adrenal gland, and pancreas. MRI of the abdomen demonstrated two 6-7 cm masses in the liver. MRI of the lumbar spine demonstrated lesions in the L2 to L4 spinous processes, paraspinal muscles, and subcutaneous tissues, as well as an 8 mm enhancing intradural lesion at T11, all thought to be metastatic disease. A biopsy of the liver showed portal tract expansion by a spindle cell proliferation rich in inflammation. Tumor cells showed immunoreactivity for smooth muscle actin and anaplastic lymphoma kinase 1 (ALK1). Tissue from the L5 vertebra showed a process histologically identical to that seen in the liver. FISH analysis of these lesions demonstrated an ALK (2p23) gene rearrangement. The patient was successfully treated with an ALK-inhibitor, Crizotinib, and is now in complete remission. We present the first reported case, to our knowledge, of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with systemic manifestations and ALK translocation. This case is a prime example of how personalized medicine has vastly improved patient care through the use of molecular-targeted therapy
The new psychoactive substances 5-(2-aminopropyl)indole (5-IT) and 6-(2-aminopropyl)indole (6-IT) interact with monoamine transporters in brain tissue
In recent years, use of psychoactive synthetic stimulants has grown rapidly. 5-(2-Aminopropyl)indole (5-IT) is a synthetic drug associated with a number of fatalities, that appears to be one of the newest 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) replacements. Here, the monoamine-releasing properties of 5-IT, its structural isomer 6-(2-aminopropyl)indole (6-IT), and MDMA were compared using in vitro release assays at transporters for dopamine (DAT), norepinephrine (NET), and serotonin (SERT) in rat brain synaptosomes. In vivo pharmacology was assessed by locomotor activity and a functional observational battery (FOB) in mice. 5-IT and 6-IT were potent substrates at DAT, NET, and SERT. In contrast with the non-selective releasing properties of MDMA, 5-IT displayed greater potency for release at DAT over SERT, while 6-IT displayed greater potency for release at SERT over DAT. 5-IT produced locomotor stimulation and typical stimulant effects in the FOB similar to those produced by MDMA. Conversely, 6-IT increased behaviors associated with 5-HT toxicity. 5-IT likely has high abuse potential, which may be somewhat diminished by its slow onset of in vivo effects, whereas 6-IT may have low abuse liability, but enhanced risk for adverse effects. Results indicate that subtle differences in the chemical structure of transporter ligands can have profound effects on biological activity. The potent monoamine-releasing actions of 5-IT, coupled with its known inhibition of MAO A, could underlie its dangerous effects when administered alone, and in combination with other monoaminergic drugs or medications. Consequently, 5-IT and related compounds may pose substantial risk for abuse and serious adverse effects in human users
Comparative genomics profiling of clinical isolates of Aeromonas salmonicida using DNA microarrays
BACKGROUND: Aeromonas salmonicida has been isolated from numerous fish species and shows wide variation in virulence and pathogenicity. As part of a larger research program to identify virulence genes and candidates for vaccine development, a DNA microarray was constructed using a subset of 2024 genes from the draft genome sequence of A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strain A449. The microarray included genes encoding known virulence-associated factors in A. salmonicida and homologs of virulence genes of other pathogens. We used microarray-based comparative genomic hybridizations (M-CGH) to compare selected A. salmonicida sub-species and other Aeromonas species from different hosts and geographic locations. RESULTS: Results showed variable carriage of virulence-associated genes and generally increased variation in gene content across sub-species and species boundaries. The greatest variation was observed among genes associated with plasmids and transposons. There was little correlation between geographic region and degree of variation for all isolates tested. CONCLUSION: We have used the M-CGH technique to identify subsets of conserved genes from amongst this set of A. salmonicida virulence genes for further investigation as potential vaccine candidates. Unlike other bacterial characterization methods that use a small number of gene or DNA-based functions, M-CGH examines thousands of genes and/or whole genomes and thus is a more comprehensive analytical tool for veterinary or even human health research

This paper reports on the consensus conference on the management of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) which was held on July 23, 2016, in Dublin, Ireland, as a part of the annual World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) meeting. This document covers all aspects of the management of IAIs. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation recommendation is used, and this document represents the executive summary of the consensus conference findings.Peer reviewe
Group-based interventions to reduce gambling involvement among male football fans: a synopsis of findings from a feasibility study
Women entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia face significant challenges: legal, regulatory, social, and others related to the traditional family norms. Despite these constraints, many women succeed. Using a social constructionist feminist lens, we analyze the experiences of 27 women entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia, focusing on their ethnic/tribal origin and related religious ideology to answer the question: How do Saudi women from tribal origin develop an entrepreneurial identity? Through a qualitative-interpretivist approach, we explore the narratives of women from tribal origins who start businesses and examine how their tribal and gender identities shape their entrepreneurial identity. Using the metatheoretical framework of liminality, we identify three phases of entrepreneurial identity formation for tribal women: separation, transition, and incorporation. We discuss the conditions prompting separation from their tribal and gender identity, the dynamics of identity work during the transition phase, and the issues faced in the incorporation phase. Our findings offer new insights into identity work in entrepreneurship by analyzing the interplay between gender and tribalism, we show that women from tribal backgrounds encounter great barriers and engage in identity work to incorporate their entrepreneurial identity
Group-based interventions to reduce gambling involvement among male football fans: a synopsis of findings from a feasibility study
Background: Gambling is associated with serious social and health harms, including suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The risk of these adverse effects increases with consumption and imposes a substantial economic burden to the National Health Service and wider society, beyond the negative impacts on individuals and their families. Sports betting is a major growth area for the gambling industry. Sports bettors are disproportionately male and younger, two risk factors for gambling harms. It is important to develop and implement preventative interventions that limit the escalation of gambling harms among this group. We report on the feasibility of an intervention delivered within and by professional football clubs, a setting which has proved highly successful in attracting men to other behaviour change interventions (e.g. weight loss). Methods In what was originally designed as a three-phase study, a face-to-face group-based intervention (Football Fans and Betting) was refined in Phase 1, for delivery by trained community coaches at professional football club stadia. Eight 90-minute weekly sessions included interactive ‘classroom-based’ education around gambling behaviours, the industry and impacts, and group-based physical activity to promote social connectivity. Phase 2 assessed the feasibility of approaches to recruitment and retention and the acceptability of Football Fans and Betting to both coaches and participants. Phase 3 was intended to comprise a pragmatic, two-arm pilot randomised controlled trial of the Football Fans and Betting intervention at four professional football clubs in England. Results: Data collected from participants and coaches via one-to-one interviews, observations and focus groups revealed significant barriers to recruitment, despite considerable iterative efforts to optimise ‘branding’ and strategies. Many of our target population did not perceive themselves as needing support. Instead, Football Fans and Betting was attractive to those with more severe gambling symptomology but who were ineligible as they required more specialist safeguarding support than Football Fans and Betting offered. It proved problematic to promote Football Fans and Betting as a programme to prevent progression to more serious gambling harms to men who were embedded in social networks where gambling was perceived as normal. The irony that many professional football clubs partner with gambling companies was noted by participants and some expressed scepticism around club intentions for delivering Football Fans and Betting. Despite considerable efforts to run Football Fans and Betting at six English professional football clubs during 2022 and 2023, insufficient numbers were recruited and retained. Phase 3 did not take place as progression to a pilot trial was unviable. Despite low numbers participating in Football Fans and Betting, those who undertook the programme found it to be useful in supporting behaviour change and in providing greater insight into industry tactics. Football Fans and Betting was most successful in feasibility delivery when it was delivered within grassroots and local community contexts. Conclusions: In the current climate of gambling industry penetration into professional football, promoting a gambling harms prevention intervention proved an insurmountable challenge
