On the numerical stability of Fourier extensions

An effective means to approximate an analytic, nonperiodic function on a bounded interval is by using a Fourier series on a larger domain. When constructed appropriately, this so-called Fourier extension is known to converge geometrically fast in the truncation parameter. Unfortunately, computing a Fourier extension requires solving an ill-conditioned linear system, and hence one might expect such rapid convergence to be destroyed when carrying out computations in finite precision. The purpose of this paper is to show that this is not the case. Specifically, we show that Fourier extensions are actually numerically stable when implemented in finite arithmetic, and achieve a convergence rate that is at least superalgebraic. Thus, in this instance, ill-conditioning of the linear system does not prohibit a good approximation. In the second part of this paper we consider the issue of computing Fourier extensions from equispaced data. A result of Platte, Trefethen & Kuijlaars states that no method for this problem can be both numerically stable and exponentially convergent. We explain how Fourier extensions relate to this theoretical barrier, and demonstrate that they are particularly well suited for this problem: namely, they obtain at least superalgebraic convergence in a numerically stable manner

Análisis de la imagen de los Ayudantes Técnicos Sanitarios (ATS) en la prensa 1975-1976

El año 1976 es una época de cambios importantes tanto a nivel político como social, iniciándose la “Transición Española”. La prensa escrita desempeñó un papel importante como medio de divulgación con gran influencia en la sociedad. Analizar la identidad profesional de enfermeros/as en España entre 1975-1976, permite identificar y entender mejor la transformación de la profesión y su entrada en la universidad, lo que generó una amplia movilización de los Ayudantes Técnicos Sanitarios (A.T.S.), tanto dentro del sistema sanitario, como fuera de él, a través de huelgas y manifestaciones, reivindicaciones que quedaron plasmadas en la prensa. Propagation studies for the construction of atomic macro-coherence in dense media as a tool to investigate neutrino physics

In this manuscript we review the possibility of inducing large coherence in a macroscopic dense target by using adiabatic techniques. For this purpose we investigate the degradation of the laser pulse through propagation, which was also related to the size of the prepared medium. Our results show that, although adiabatic techniques offer the best alternative in terms of stability against experimental parameters, for very dense media it is necessary to engineer laser-matter interaction in order to minimize laser field degradation. On the stability of θ\theta-methods for DDEs and PDDEs

In this paper, the stability of $\theta$-methods for delay differential equations is studied based on the test equation $y'(t)=-A y(t) + B y(t-\tau)$, where $\tau$ is a constant delay and $A$ is a positive definite matrix. It is mainly considered the case where the matrices $A$ and $B$ are not simultaneosly diagonalizable and the concept of field of values is used to prove a sufficient condition for unconditional stability of these methods and another condition which also guarantees their stability, but according to the step size. The results obtained are also simplified for the case where the matrices $A$ and $B$ are simultaneously diagonalizable and compared with other similar works for the general case. Several numerical examples in which the theory discussed here is applied to parabolic problems given by partial delay differential equations with a diffusion term and a delayed term are presented, too.Comment: 17 pages, 21st IMACS World Congres

La tesis revisa los niveles psicológicos y escatológicos del alma para poder comprender la conducta de los héroes homéricos y virgilianos así como la retribución que reciben en el más allá. También se analizan las concepciones sobre la otra vida en Homero y Virgilio y en los episodios más relevantes de sus epopeyas: localización del otro mundo, estado de los muertos, premios y castigos después de muertos, personajes y criaturas de los infiernos. El estudio se continúa en los autores y las creencias posteriores a Homero hasta llegar a la época romana y concluye con una comparación exhaustiva entre los dos autores, destacando las deudas de Virgilio para con Homero y las innovaciones virgilianas

Annual report on Sunspot Counting Program 2014

Este programa observación nació a finales del año 2012 en la Universidad de Extremadura con el fin de ampliar aún más nuestra investigación en la reconstrucción de la actividad solar. Desde el 1 de Enero de 2013, nuestros recuentos de manchas solares se han presentado al Real Observatorio de Bélgica (ROB) como contribución a los esfuerzos internacionales de mantener y actualizar el número internacional de Manchas Solares. Para ello, hemos utilizado un pequeño refractor apocromático de 80 mm de diámetro de objetivo y 550 mm de longitud focal, a fin de proyectar una imagen de 150 mm de diámetro en una plantilla. Este informe proporciona un conjunto completo de los datos obtenidos durante el año 2014, con cuatro tablas que muestran nuestros datos. Por otra parte, el índice de referencia de las manchas solares se compara con nuestros resultados. Esperamos que esta publicación sea de utilidad a la comunidad científica que estudia el número de manchas solares: la mayor serie de índices solares derivadas de la observación directa del Sol.This program was born in late 2012 at the University of Extremadura in order to further extend our research in the reconstruction of past solar activity. Since 1st January 2013, our sunspot counts have been submitted to the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) as a contribution to the international effort of maintaining and updating the International Sunspot Number. For this purpose, we have used a small apochromatic refractor –80mm of objective diameter and 550mm of focal length– to project a 150mm diameter image onto a template. In this report, we provide a complete set of data obtained throughout the year 2014, with four Tables showing our data. Moreover, the reference sunspot index is compared with our results. We hope that this publication be useful to the scientific community studying the sunspot number: the longest solar index series derived from direct observation of the Sun
