Spheroidisation of iron powder in a microwave plasma reactor
Plasma-assisted spheroidisation of metal powders offers several technical
advantages with respect to both the ease of materials handling and
powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. Advantages include improved
flowability, increased powder packing density, elimination of internal
component cavities and fractures, changes in morphology resulting in
decreased friction between particles and contamination during pneumatic
transport and enhanced particle purity. In this empirical study, spherical
iron particles were produced using a microwave plasma operating at
atmospheric pressure and characterized using optical microscopy and SEM
techniques. Iron powders were fed into the system at fixed operating
conditions, resulting in particles with spherical structures. The theoretical
estimate of the time required for melting to occur is 1.6 ms, an order of
magnitude smaller than the actual residence time.http://www.saimm.co.za/journal-papersam2016Chemical Engineerin
Estimating forest canopy parameters from satellite waveform LiDAR by inversion of the FLIGHT three-dimensional radiative transfer model
The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) has the potential to accurately map global vegetation heights and fractional cover metrics using active laser pulse emission/reception. However, large uncertainties in the derivation of data products exist, since multiple physically plausible interpretations of the data are possible. In this study a method is described and evaluated to derive vegetation height and fractional cover from GLAS waveforms by inversion of the FLIGHT radiative transfer model. A lookup-table is constructed giving expected waveforms for a comprehensive set of canopy realisations, and is used to determine the most likely set of biophysical parameters describing the forest structure, consistent with any given GLAS waveform. The parameters retrieved are canopy height, leaf area index (LAI), fractional cover and ground slope. The range of possible parameters consistent with the waveform is used to give a per-retrieval uncertainty estimate for each retrieved parameter. The retrieved estimates were evaluated first using a simulated data set and then validated against airborne laser scanning (ALS) products for three forest sites coincident with GLAS overpasses. Results for height retrieval show mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.71 m for a mixed temperate forest site within Forest of Dean (UK), 3.35 m for the Southern Old Aspen Site, Saskatchewan, Canada, and 5.13 m for a boreal coniferous site in Norunda, Sweden. Fractional cover showed MAE of 0.10 for Forest of Dean and 0.23 for Norunda. Coefficient of determination between ALS and GLAS estimates over the combined dataset gave R2 values of 0.71 for height and 0.48 for fractional cover, with biases of −3.4 m and 0.02 respectively. Smallest errors were found where overpass dates for ALS data collection closely matched GLAS overpasses. Explicit instrument parameterisation means the method is readily adapted to future planned spaceborne LiDAR instruments such as GEDI
System Size and Energy Dependence of Jet-Induced Hadron Pair Correlation Shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum
(1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from {dijets} in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =
62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is
broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from \Delta\phi=\pi in central and
semi-central collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location
are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not
on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound
or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.Comment: 464 authors from 60 institutions, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.

Improved Measurement of Double Helicity Asymmetry in Inclusive Midrapidity pi^0 Production for Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
We present an improved measurement of the double helicity asymmetry for pi^0
production in polarized proton-proton scattering at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV employing
the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The
improvements to our previous measurement come from two main factors: Inclusion
of a new data set from the 2004 RHIC run with higher beam polarizations than
the earlier run and a recalibration of the beam polarization measurements,
which resulted in reduced uncertainties and increased beam polarizations. The
results are compared to a Next to Leading Order (NLO) perturbative Quantum
Chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation with a range of polarized gluon
distributions.Comment: 389 authors, 4 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D,

IgE allergy diagnostics and other relevant tests in allergy, a World Allergy Organization position paper
Currently, testing for immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization is the cornerstone of diagnostic evaluation in suspected allergic conditions. This review provides a thorough and updated critical appraisal of the most frequently used diagnostic tests, both in vivo and in vitro. It discusses skin tests, challenges, and serological and cellular in vitro tests, and provides an overview of indications, advantages and disadvantages of each in conditions such as respiratory, food, venom, drug, and occupational allergy. Skin prick testing remains the first line approach in most instances; the added value of serum specific IgE to whole allergen extracts or components, as well as the role of basophil activation tests, is evaluated. Unproven, non-validated, diagnostic tests are also discussed. Throughout the review, the reader must bear in mind the relevance of differentiating between sensitization and allergy; the latter entails not only allergic sensitization, but also clinically relevant symptoms triggered by the culprit allergen
ARIA 2016: Care pathways implementing emerging technologies for predictive medicine in rhinitis and asthma across the life cycle
The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative commenced during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999. The initial goals were (1) to propose a new allergic rhinitis classification, (2) to promote the concept of multi-morbidity in asthma a
Genome-wide analyses identify a role for SLC17A4 and AADAT in thyroid hormone regulation.
Thyroid dysfunction is an important public health problem, which affects 10% of the general population and increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Many aspects of thyroid hormone regulation have only partly been elucidated, including its transport, metabolism, and genetic determinants. Here we report a large meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for thyroid function and dysfunction, testing 8 million genetic variants in up to 72,167 individuals. One-hundred-and-nine independent genetic variants are associated with these traits. A genetic risk score, calculated to assess their combined effects on clinical end points, shows significant associations with increased risk of both overt (Graves' disease) and subclinical thyroid disease, as well as clinical complications. By functional follow-up on selected signals, we identify a novel thyroid hormone transporter (SLC17A4) and a metabolizing enzyme (AADAT). Together, these results provide new knowledge about thyroid hormone physiology and disease, opening new possibilities for therapeutic targets
Limit on oscillation using a jet charge method
A lower limit is set on the B_{s}^{0} meson oscillation parameter \Delta m_{s} using data collected from 1991 to 1994 by the ALEPH detector. Events with a high transverse momentum lepton and a reconstructed secondary vertex are used. The high transverse momentum leptons are produced mainly by b hadron decays, and the sign of the lepton indicates the particle/antiparticle final state in decays of neutral B mesons. The initial state is determined by a jet charge technique using both sides of the event. A maximum likelihood method is used to set a lower limit of \, \Delta m_{s}. The 95\% confidence level lower limit on \Delta m_s ranges between 5.2 and 6.5(\hbar/c^{2})~ps^{-1} when the fraction of b quarks from Z^0 decays that form B_{s}^{0} mesons is varied from 8\% to 16\%. Assuming that the B_{s}^{0} fraction is 12\%, the lower limit would be \Delta m_{s} 6.1(\hbar/c^{2})~ps^{-1} at 95\% confidence level. For x_s = \Delta m_s \, \tau_{B_s}, this limit also gives x_s 8.8 using the B_{s}^{0} lifetime of \tau_{B_s} = 1.55 \pm 0.11~ps and shifting the central value of \tau_{B_s} down by 1\sigma
