    Organic Acids, Sugars, and Anthocyanins Contents in Juices of Tunisian Pomegranate Fruits

    Juices made from fruits of 30 Tunisian accessions of pomegranate were studied for their organic acids, sugars, and anthocyanin contents, using high performance liquid chromatography. Among the detected organic acids, malic acid was the major one (>50%) followed by citric acid (>22%), while among sugars, fructose and glucose were most present in pomegranate juice contributing 53.9 and 43.4% of the total sugar content, respectively. The total anthocyanin content ranged from 9-115 mg per litre of juice with the following ranges of the six compounds found: cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside (3.1-74.4 mg/L), delphinidin-3-glucoside (0.7-22.0 mg/L), cyanidin-3-glucoside (0.8-21.0 mg/L), pelargonidin-3-glucoside (0.5-16.1 mg/L), pelargonidin-3,5-diglucoside (0.0-11.8 mg/L), and delphinidin-3,5-diglucoside (0.0-5.4 mg/L). Based on the analyzed parameters, cluster analysis allowed grouping cultivars into two main clusters. One was made of sour cultivars and the second of the sweet ones. Principle component and cluster analyses suggested that the composition of the pomegranate fruits is determined by cultivar rather than cultivation location

    Isolation and Characterization of Novel Microsatellite Markers in Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.)

    Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) has been cultivated from ancient times for its economic, ornamental and medicinal properties globally. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of 12 polymorphic microsatellite markers from a repeat-enriched genomic library of Punica granatum L. The genetic diversity of these loci was assessed in 60 genotypes of Punica granatum L. All loci were variable: the number of polymorphic alleles per locus ranged from two to five (average 2.9). The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.15 to 0.87 and 0.29 to 0.65, respectively. The polymorphic information content ranged from 0.26 to 0.61 (average: 0.43). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that polymorphic microsatellite markers have been reported for P. granatum L. These new markers should allow studies of the population structure and genetic diversity of pomegranate to be performed in the future

    Does Oil Price Volatility Matter for Asian Emerging Economies?

    This article investigates the impact of oil price volatility on six major emerging economies in Asia using time-series cross-section and time-series econometric techniques. To assess the robustness of the findings, we further implement such heterogeneous panel data estimation methods as Mean Group (MG), Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (CCEMG) and Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimators to allow for cross-sectional dependence. The empirical results reveal that oil price volatility has a detrimental effect on these emerging economies. In the short run, oil price volatility influenced output growth in China and affected both GDP growth and inflation in India. In the Philippines, oil price volatility impacted on inflation, but in Indonesia, it impacted on both GDP growth and inflation before and after the Asian financial crisis. In Malaysia, oil price volatility impacted on GDP growth, although there is notably little feedback from the opposite side. For Thailand, oil price volatility influenced output growth prior to the Asian financial crisis, but the impact disappeared after the crisis. It appears that oil subsidization by the Thai Government via introduction of the oil fund played a significant role in improving the economic performance by lessening the adverse effects of oil price volatility on macroeconomic indicators

    Oil and stock returns: Evidence from European industrial sector indices in a time-varying environment

    The time-varying correlation between oil prices returns and European industrial sector indices returns, considering the origin of the oil price shock, is investigated. A time-varying multivariate heteroskedastic framework is employed to test the above hypothesis based on data from 10 European sectors. The contemporaneous correlations suggest that the relationship between sector indices and oil prices change over time and they are industry specific. In addition, the supply-side oil price shocks result in low to moderate positive correlation levels, the precautionary demand oil price shocks lead to almost zero correlation levels, whereas the aggregate demand oil price shocks generate significant changes in the correlation levels (either positive or negative). Both the origin of the oil price shock and the type of industry are important determinants of the correlation level between industrial sectors’ returns and oil prices. Prominent among the results is the fact that during the financial crisis of 2008 some sectors were providing diversification opportunities to investors dealing with the crude oil market

    Changes to the proteome and targeted metabolites of xylem sap in Brassica oleracea in response to salt stress

    Root-to-shoot signalling via xylem sap is an important mechanism by which plants respond to stress. This signalling could be mediated by alteration in the concentrations of inorganic and/or organic molecules. The effect of salt stress on the contents of xylem sap in Brassica olarecea has been analysed by mass spectrometry in order to quantify these changes. Subcellular location of arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) by immunogold labelling and peroxidase isozymes was also analysed by isoelectrofocusing. The xylem sap metabolome analysis demonstrated the presence of many organic compounds such as sugars, organic acids and amino acids. Of these, amino acid concentrations, particularly that of glutamine, the major amino acid in the sap, were substantially reduced by salt stress. The xylem sap proteome analysis demonstrated the accumulation of enzymes involved in xylem differentiation and lignification, such as cystein proteinases, acid peroxidases, and a putative hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:shikimate hydroxycinnamoyl transferase under salt stress. The peroxidase isozyme pattern showed that salt stress induced a high accumulation of an acid isoform. These results suggest that xylem differentiation and lignification is induced by salt stress. The combination of different methods to analyse the xylem sap composition provides new insights into mechanisms in plant development and signalling under salt stress

    Improving Disease Management in Field Pea and Durum Wheat in the MonDak Region

    Results from wilt pathogenicity and race evaluations for 25 North Dakota Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. pisi (Fop) isolates conducted in the greenhouse indicated all Fop races exist in North Dakota. Race 2 isolates were more frequently recovered from plants with root rot symptoms. Root rot assays also conducted in the greenhouse demonstrated that most Fop isolates were as aggressive as F. solani and F. avenaceum based on increased root disease severity. Results from field experiments conducted in 4 sites in the MonDak region between 2017 and 2019 evaluating the effect of three planting dates and six durum varieties with differing levels of susceptibility to leaf spot and Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) indicated that early planting maximized yield and influenced ergot incidence. Although planting date did not affect late leaf spot and DON, choosing less susceptible varieties to fungal leaf spot and FHB reduced late fungal leaf spot and DON, respectively
