    Nutritional value and heavy metal content of fishmeal from the Southwest Caspian Sea

    This study aimed to evaluate some nutritional values and heavy metal contents of fishmeal produced by the commercial factories in Guilan Province, the Southwest Caspian Sea. The fishmeal samples were randomly collected from five factories producing fishmeal by Kilka (Clupeonella spp.) (units 1-4) and tuna canning offal (unit 5) as the raw materials. Proximate fish composition, amino acid contents and four heavy metal concentrations including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) were measured in the fishmeal specimens. Crude protein contents were found to be in the range of 53.61-68.82% and the lowest value belonged to the unit 5. Also, the highest level of fat and ash contents were 22.49% and 18.05%, respectively (p < 0.05). The lowest essential: nonessential amino acid ratio was 0.71 in unit 5. Fishmeal specimens from unit 5 showed the highest metal concentrations with the following descending order: Cr > Cd > Pb > Hg. Results indicated that the heavy metal concentrations in the fishmeal are dependent on the source of raw materials. The heavy metal concentrations in the examined fishmeal did not exceed the permissible limits proposed by National Research Council (NRC) for animal feedstuff requirements

    Seroepidemiology of hepatitis C in Kermanshah (West of Iran, 2006)

    Background and Aims: Chronic and serious outcomes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection impose remarkable economic burden to the health system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of HCV infection in the general population of Kermanshah in the year 2006. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1721 residents from Kermanshah were chosen by systematic and cluster sampling in the year 2006. After interview, serum samples were taken and evaluated for HCV-Ab using ELISA method (3rd generation). Positive samples were confirmed by Western Blot (WB) and PCR if necessary. Results: The prevalence of HCV was 0.87 (male: 1.4 vs. female: 0.3). There was 88.2 coordination between ELISA and WB results. Statistical relationship was observed between HCV infection and male sex (P<0.018), history of addiction (P<0.0001), shared needle (P<0.0001), unsafe sexual contact (P<0.008), history of blood and blood products transfusion (P<0.0001), tattooing (P<0.0001), history of incarceration (P<0.0001), and hemophilia (P<0.0001). On the other hand, stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that hemophilia, shared needle, IV addiction, transfusion and addiction were the most important risk factors for HCV infection in a descending order. The rate of HCV infection increased in cases with multiple risk factors. Conclusions: We estimate that among 967196 people, who live in Kermanshah, nearty 8400 individuals may have HCV infection and this will be a major problem in the near future. Addicts especially IV drug users and cases with the history of blood and blood products transfusion are high risk groups who need special attention regarding HCV infection

    A study on the stretching potential, anisotropy behavior and mechanical properties of AA7075 and Ti-6Al-4V alloys using forming limit diagram: An experimental, numerical and theoretical approaches

    Forming limit diagram of aluminum AA7075 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloys was examined. For this aim, various strain paths from uniaxial to equi-biaxial tensions were considered. It was established that titanium alloy stretching potential is more than of aluminum alloy due to higher average strain hardening exponent. Also, the average anisotropy factor of AA7075 is about five times lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V resulting in the reduction of resistance to thinning during sheet metal forming processes. Furthermore, employment of BBC2000 yield criterion for AA7075 and Hill’s 1993 for Ti-6Al-4V in determining numerical forming limit diagrams resulted in a closer coincidence with the experimentations. Finally, imperfection factors of 0.970 and 0.955 for AA7075, and 0.935 and 0.960 for Ti-6Al-4V are respectively attained by yield surfaces of BBC2000 and Hill’s 1993

    Nonylphenol affects gonadotropin levels in the pituitary gland and plasma of female rainbow trout

    Female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to 4-nonylphenol (NP) at (mean measured) concentrations of 0.7, 8.3, and 85.6 μg/L, for 18 weeks, during early ovarian development. Fish were sampled sublethally every six weeks, and terminal samples were taken at 18 weeks. NP induced an estrogenic effect (the synthesis of vitellogenin) at concentrations of 8.3 and 85.6 μg/L. An effect on gonadotropin synthesis and secretion was also observed. Plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and FSH gene expression in the pituitary were the most sensitive endpoints assessed, being reduced at the lowest dose employed (0.7 μgNP/L). Pituitary gland luteinizing hormone (LH) content was significantly lower in fish exposed to 85.6 μgNP/L, and LH gene expression was suppressed in fish exposed to 8.3 and 85.6 μgNP/L. In contrast, plasma LH concentration increased in these fish, but by a very minor absolute amount, and returned to control levels by the final sampling time. Gonadal development ceased in the fish exposed to 85.6 μgNP/L, and steroidogenesis in these fish was also markedly inhibited. Although the mechanisms underlying these responses are unknown, this study demonstrates that NP has adverse effects on pituitary function that can result in inhibition of ovarian development

    Neurological Manifestations of Hospitalized Patients with Covid-19: A Case Series Study

    There are some reports about the neurological manifestations and complications of COVID-19. We present neurological manifestations in 6 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The patients presented with common symptoms of COVID-19 along with common findings from high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan such as ground-glass opacities (GGOs). Though, RT-PCR testing of SARS-CoV-2 was negative for all 6 cases. In the current report, acute cerebrovascular diseases affected older patients, while dementia, seizure and encephalopathy affected younger ones. Three of the 6 patients had proven strokes based on their neuroimaging. Four of the 6 patients had high d-dimer levels. Two of the cases experienced convulsion. The third patient presented with typical symptoms and signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. The sixth case was interesting for transient dementia. Unfortunately, four out of six patients died. The recent case series report the association between neurological involvements and COVID-19 infection. Clinicians should be alert of the neurologic symptoms in the setting of COVID-19, which might even be the first presentations of this infection
