    Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. V. Further Results for the Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

    We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47} (resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <= m <= 12 with free boundary conditions and locate roughly the limiting curves.Comment: 111 pages (LaTeX2e).     Arhitektonski opus Ivana Meštrovića u kontekstu vremena i prilika u kojima je umjetnik stvarao zasigurno je izniman doprinos hrvatskom graditeljstvu prve polovice 20. st. Njegova valorizacija višestruko je važna, osobito s muzeološkoga, stilskoga i programatskoga gledišta. U slojevitom eklekticizmu svih Meštrovićevih ostvarenih i neostvarenih arhitektonskih te urbanističkih projekata stilska raščlamba i diferencijacija svakoga pojedinog objekta i nacrta postavlja se kao nužna polazišna točka koju naknadno slijedi povijesnoumjetničko vrednovanje i muzeološke preferencije. Neosporno višejezičan vokabular Meštrovićevih arhitektonskih zamisli za sve je vrijeme njegova stvaralaštva pod kontinuiranim utjecajem različitih arhitektonskih rječnika u širokome vremenskom rasponu od starovjekovnih civilizacija do modernih tekovina. U umjetnikovu opusu mogu se posve jasno iščitati prostorne, tlocrtne, dispozicijske i pejzažne zadanosti klasičnoga arhitektonskog promišljanjaThe article analyzes the problem of the architectural legacy of Ivan Meštrović with the intention of seeing the importance of this under-examined area of his work. An analytical examination, scientific analysis and subsequent popularization of the architectural oeuvre of Ivan Meštrović and, in general, its contribution to the national and European architecture of the first half of the 20th century is important for a better scientific and museological evaluation of the architectural heritage. The architecture of Ivan Meštrović tends to be undervalued in comparison with his sculptural production. The research into and the systematic treatment and protection of the architectural monuments of this great artist can provide us with an insight into a new world of space, volume and shapes, and of design, conceptual and construction solutions. In the sea of dissimilarity, the models and various stylistic narrations reveal to us Meštrović the architect. The paper is structured in such a way that the first part refers to the artist’s education and the acquisition of basic architectural knowledge during his study in Vienna, helping him to form an architectural style of his own through the prism of the influences of various cultures and civilisations. In the second part the focus is directed at separate analysis and interpretation of designed and constructed buildings, as well as those whose ideas were not realized. Monuments are categorized into four groups according to theme and use: memorial buildings, religious buildings, creative and living spaces, public buildings. An analysis of Meštrović’s architecture reveals a pluralism of styles, within which several dominant sources stand out. Primarily these are classicism, then the medieval religious architecture of Dalmatia, Egyptian monumentalism and the influences of his many collaborators

    Spanning forests and the q-state Potts model in the limit q \to 0

    We study the q-state Potts model with nearest-neighbor coupling v=e^{\beta J}-1 in the limit q,v \to 0 with the ratio w = v/q held fixed. Combinatorially, this limit gives rise to the generating polynomial of spanning forests; physically, it provides information about the Potts-model phase diagram in the neighborhood of (q,v) = (0,0). We have studied this model on the square and triangular lattices, using a transfer-matrix approach at both real and complex values of w. For both lattices, we have computed the symbolic transfer matrices for cylindrical strips of widths 2 \le L \le 10, as well as the limiting curves of partition-function zeros in the complex w-plane. For real w, we find two distinct phases separated by a transition point w=w_0, where w_0 = -1/4 (resp. w_0 = -0.1753 \pm 0.0002) for the square (resp. triangular) lattice. For w > w_0 we find a non-critical disordered phase, while for w < w_0 our results are compatible with a massless Berker-Kadanoff phase with conformal charge c = -2 and leading thermal scaling dimension x_{T,1} = 2 (marginal operator). At w = w_0 we find a "first-order critical point": the first derivative of the free energy is discontinuous at w_0, while the correlation length diverges as w \downarrow w_0 (and is infinite at w = w_0). The critical behavior at w = w_0 seems to be the same for both lattices and it differs from that of the Berker-Kadanoff phase: our results suggest that the conformal charge is c = -1, the leading thermal scaling dimension is x_{T,1} = 0, and the critical exponents are \nu = 1/d = 1/2 and \alpha = 1.Comment: 131 pages (LaTeX2e).     Development of late blight resistant potatoes by cisgenic stacking

    Background Phytophthora infestans, causing late blight in potato, remains one of the most devastating pathogens in potato production and late blight resistance is a top priority in potato breeding. The introduction of multiple resistance (R) genes with different spectra from crossable species into potato varieties is required. Cisgenesis is a promising approach that introduces native genes from the crops own gene pool using GM technology, thereby retaining favourable characteristics of established varieties. Results We pursued a cisgenesis approach to introduce two broad spectrum potato late blight R genes, Rpi-sto1 and Rpi-vnt1.1 from the crossable species Solanum stoloniferum and Solanum venturii, respectively, into three different potato varieties. First, single R gene-containing transgenic plants were produced for all varieties to be used as references for the resistance levels and spectra to be expected in the respective genetic backgrounds. Next, a construct containing both cisgenic late blight R genes (Rpi-vnt1.1 and Rpi-sto1), but lacking the bacterial kanamycin resistance selection marker (NPTII) was transformed to the three selected potato varieties using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Gene transfer events were selected by PCR among regenerated shoots. Through further analyses involving morphological evaluations in the greenhouse, responsiveness to Avr genes and late blight resistance in detached leaf assays, the selection was narrowed down to eight independent events. These cisgenic events were selected because they showed broad spectrum late blight resistance due to the activity of both introduced R genes. The marker-free transformation was compared to kanamycin resistance assisted transformation in terms of T-DNA and vector backbone integration frequency. Also, differences in regeneration time and genotype dependency were evaluated. Conclusions We developed a marker-free transformation pipeline to select potato plants functionally expressing a stack of late blight R genes. Marker-free transformation is less genotype dependent and less prone to vector backbone integration as compared to marker-assisted transformation. Thereby, this study provides an important tool for the successful deployment of R genes in agriculture and contributes to the production of potentially durable late blight resistant potatoes

    COx-free hydrogen production from ammonia – mimicking the activity of Ru catalysts with unsupported Co-Re alloys

    On-demand production of hydrogen from ammonia is a challenge limiting the implementation of ammonia as a long term hydrogen vector to overcome the difficulties associated with hydrogen storage. Herein, we present the development of catalysts for the on-demand production of hydrogen from ammonia by combining metals with high and low N-adatom adsorption energies. In this way, cobalt-rhenium (Co-Re) catalysts show high activity mimicking that of ruthenium. EXAFS/XANES analyses demonstrate that the bimetallic Co-Re contribution is responsible for the activity and the stability of the catalysts in consecutive runs with no observable formation of nitrides (Co-N and Re-N) occurring under the ammonia atmosphere. While cobalt is partially re-oxidised under ammonia, re-reduction in the presence of rhenium is observed at higher temperatures, coinciding with the on-set of catalytic activity which is accompanied by minor structural changes. These results provide insight for the development of highly active alloy based ammonia decomposition catalysts

    Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Regulation of 5-HT Receptors and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis

    Disturbances in the serotonin (5-HT) system is the neurobiological abnormality most consistently associated with suicide. Hyperactivity of the hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is also described in suicide victims. The HPA axis is the classical neuroendocrine system that responds to stress and whose final product, corticosteroids, targets components of the limbic system, particularly the hippocampus. We will review resulsts from animal studies that point to the possibility that many of the 5-HT receptor changes observed in suicide brains may be a result of, or may be worsened by, the HPA overactivity that may be present in some suicide victims. The results of these studies can be summarized as follows: (1) chronic unpredictable stress produces high corticosteroid levels in rats; (2) chronic stress also results in changes in specific 5-HT receptors (increases in cortical 5-HT2A and decreases in hipocampal 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B); (3) chronic antidepressant administration prevents many of the 5-HT receptor changes observed after stress; and (4) chronic antidepressant administration reverses the overactivity of the HPA axis. If indeed 5-HT receptors have a partial role in controlling affective states, then their modulation by corticosteroids provides a potential mechanism by which these hormones may regulate mood. These data may also provide a biological understanding of how stressful events may increase the risk for suicide in vulnerable individuals and may help us elucidate the neurobiological underpinnings of treatment resistance.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73437/1/j.1749-6632.1997.tb52357.x.pd

    Psychosocial Treatment of Children in Foster Care: A Review

    A substantial number of children in foster care exhibit psychiatric difficulties. Recent epidemiologi-cal and historical trends in foster care, clinical findings about the adjustment of children in foster care, and adult outcomes are reviewed, followed by a description of current approaches to treatment and extant empirical support. Available interventions for these children can be categorized as either symptom-focused or systemic, with empirical support for specific methods ranging from scant to substantial. Even with treatment, behavioral and emotional problems often persist into adulthood, resulting in poor functional outcomes. We suggest that self-regulation may be an important mediat-ing factor in the appearance of emotional and behavioral disturbance in these children
