Site investigation for the effects of vegetation on ground stability
The procedure for geotechnical site investigation is well established but little attention is currently given to investigating the potential of vegetation to assist with ground stability. This paper describes how routine investigation procedures may be adapted to consider the effects of the vegetation. It is recommended that the major part of the vegetation investigation is carried out, at relatively low cost, during the preliminary (desk) study phase of the investigation when there is maximum flexibility to take account of findings in the proposed design and construction. The techniques available for investigation of the effects of vegetation are reviewed and references provided for further consideration. As for general geotechnical investigation work, it is important that a balance of effort is maintained in the vegetation investigation between (a) site characterisation (defining and identifying the existing and proposed vegetation to suit the site and ground conditions), (b) testing (in-situ and laboratory testing of the vegetation and root systems to provide design parameters) and (c) modelling (to analyse the vegetation effects)

No evidence of the ego-depletion effect across task characteristics and individual differences: A pre-registered study
Ego-depletion, a psychological phenomenon in which participants are less able to engage in self-control after prior exertion of self-control, has become widely popular in the scientific community as well as in the media. However, considerable debate exists among researchers as to the nature of the ego-depletion effect, and growing evidence suggests the effect may not be as strong or robust as the extant literature suggests. We examined the robustness of the ego-depletion effect and aimed to maximize the likelihood of detecting the effect by using one of the most widely used depletion tasks (video-viewing attention control task) and by considering task characteristics and individual differences that potentially moderate the effect. We also sought to make our research plan transparent by pre-registering our hypotheses, procedure, and planned analyses prior to data collection. Contrary to the egodepletion hypothesis, participants in the depletion condition did not perform worse than control participants on the subsequent self-control task, even after considering moderator variables. These findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting ego-depletion is not a reliable phenomenon, though more research is needed that uses large sample sizes, considers moderator variables, and pre-registers prior to data collection
On the pion-nucleon coupling constant
In view of persisting misunderstanding about the determination of the
pion-nucleon coupling constants in the Nijmegen multienergy partial-wave
analyses of pp, np, and pbar-p scattering data, we present additional
information which may clarify several points of discussion. We comment on
several recent papers addressing the issue of the pion-nucleon coupling

A two-species model of a two-dimensional sandpile surface: a case of asymptotic roughening
We present and analyze a model of an evolving sandpile surface in (2 + 1)
dimensions where the dynamics of mobile grains ({\rho}(x, t)) and immobile
clusters (h(x, t)) are coupled. Our coupling models the situation where the
sandpile is flat on average, so that there is no bias due to gravity. We find
anomalous scaling: the expected logarithmic smoothing at short length and time
scales gives way to roughening in the asymptotic limit, where novel and

Lower general executive function is primarily associated with trait worry: A latent variable analysis of negative thought/affect measures
This exploratory latent-variable study sought to identify common sources of variance between two multi-faceted important sets of constructs: executive functions (EFs) and negative thoughts/affect. One-hundred ninety-two college students completed nine tasks representing three types of EFs (inhibition, updating, and shifting) and a set of questionnaires assessing four facets of negative thought/affect (anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, worry, and rumination). Results indicated that, although the four negative thought/affect constructs were substantially correlated with one another, trait worry was the construct uniquely associated with EFs. Specifically, worry was associated with general EF abilities underlying all three subtypes of EFs (common EF), but was not associated with specific EF abilities (i.e., shifting-specific and updating-specific). These findings highlight the importance of partitioning common and specific variances in both EFs and negative thought/affect when examining the associations between these two research domains
Measuring Black Hole Spin in OJ287
We model the binary black hole system OJ287 as a spinning primary and a
non-spinning secondary. It is assumed that the primary has an accretion disk
which is impacted by the secondary at specific times. These times are
identified as major outbursts in the light curve of OJ287. This identification
allows an exact solution of the orbit, with very tight error limits. Nine
outbursts from both the historical photographic records as well as from recent
photometric measurements have been used as fixed points of the solution: 1913,
1947, 1957, 1973, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2005 and 2007 outbursts. This allows the
determination of eight parameters of the orbit. Most interesting of these are
the primary mass of , the secondary mass , major axis precession rate per period, and the
eccentricity of the orbit 0.70. The dimensionless spin parameter is
(1 sigma). The last parameter will be more tightly
constrained in 2015 when the next outburst is due. The outburst should begin on
15 December 2015 if the spin value is in the middle of this range, on 3 January
2016 if the spin is 0.25, and on 26 November 2015 if the spin is 0.31. We have
also tested the possibility that the quadrupole term in the Post Newtonian
equations of motion does not exactly follow Einstein's theory: a parameter
is introduced as one of the 8 parameters. Its value is within 30% (1 sigma) of
the Einstein's value . This supports the of black
holes within the achievable precision. We have also measured the loss of
orbital energy due to gravitational waves. The loss rate is found to agree with

Associations between udder health and reproductive performance in United Kingdom dairy cows
The objective of this research was to evaluate the relationship between udder health and reproductive performance in UK dairy cows. Data from 80 herds were restructured such that each unit of data represented a 2-d period during lactation where a cow was at risk of becoming pregnant. Multilevel discrete-time survival models were then used within a Bayesian framework to explore associations between reproductive outcomes and a variety of potential explanatory variables. Separate models were constructed using 2 different univariate binary outcomes: a cow becoming pregnant during a risk period and a cow becoming pregnant as a result of a given service. Potential explanatory variables included occurrence of clinical mastitis and a categorical representation of individual cow somatic cell count (SCC), both at a variety of timings relative to the risk period. Posterior predictions were used to assess model fit and to check model building assumptions. These demonstrated that the model represented the data well. Within-sample Monte Carlo simulation (i.e., use of the model to predict outcomes for cases within the data set, repeated over a large number of iterations) was used to illustrate results as posterior predicted relative risks. A negative association was found between reproductive performance and cases of clinical mastitis over a wide time frame relative to the risk period (from 28 d before to 70 d after the risk period). A similar negative association with the probability of a service leading to a pregnancy (pregnancy rate) was observed over the same time frame. Higher SCC recordings (i.e., those more likely to be associated with an intramammary infection) were also associated with decreased reproductive performance, especially where an individual cow SCC of greater than 399,000/mL was recorded in the 30 d following a risk period or service. This research demonstrates that both clinical and subclinical mastitis are associated with a reduction in reproductive performance, and that this influence varies in magnitude but can be exerted over a prolonged period
