    Electrical treatment of reduced consciousness; experience with coma and Alzheimers's disease

    The right median nerve can be stimulated electrically to help arouse the central nervous system for persons with reduced levels of consciousness. The mechanisms of central action include increased cerebral blood flow and raised levels of dopamine. There is 11 years of experience in the USA of using nerve stimulation for acute coma after traumatic brain injury. There is a much longer period of experience by neurosurgeons in Japan with implanted electrodes on the cervical spinal cord for persons in the persistent vegetative state (PVS). But the use of right median nerve electrical stimulation (RMNS) for patients in the subacute and chronic phases of coma is relatively new. Surface electrical stimulation to treat anoxic brain injury as well as traumatic brain injury is evolving. Novel applications of electrical stimulation in Amsterdam have produced cognitive behavioural effects in persons with early and mid-stage Alzheimer's disease employing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Improvements in short-term memory and speech fluency have also been noted. Regardless of the aetiology of the coma or reduced level of awareness, electrical stimulation may serve as a catalyst to enhance central nervous system functions. It remains for the standard treatments and modalities to retrain the injured brain emerging from reduced levels of consciousness. © 2005 Psychology Press Ltd

    Social behaviour of Jackass penguins at sea

    This paper reports flocking, communal feeding and other aspects of sea-based social behaviour in the jackass penguin (Spheniscus demersus). Penguins tend to occur within about 15 km of the mainland, but range farther afield from the islands used for breeding and/or roosting. Relatively large groups of 50 and more birds occur more than 50 km from the nearest island, but seldom more than 15 km from the mainland. The majority of the sea-going population consists of birds occurring in groups. Mean group size is eight birds. In any one particular group the members all tend to perform the same behaviour at the same time. The tendency to form foraging groups and the highly synchronized diving and cohesion of these groups indicate that this behaviour is socially facilitated, suggesting that it is adaptive in terms of both enhanced prey location and capture. Feeding penguins do not submerge for long and do not dive deeply. Birds in diving groups perform head-dipping movements which might signal readiness to dive and thus promote synchronous activity. The paper points out how little is known about jackass penguins at sea - the environment in which they probably spend the majority of their time. Lack of information on the birds at sea precludes proper interpretation of many land-based events attending the biology of the bird and its conservation

    Evidence for strong evolution in galaxy environmental quenching efficiency between z = 1.6 and z = 0.9

    Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.We analyse the evolution of environmental quenching efficiency, the fraction of quenched cluster galaxies which would be star forming if they were in the field, as a function of redshift in 14 spectroscopically confirmed galaxy clusters with 0.87 < z < 1.63 from the Spitzer Adaptation of the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey. The clusters are the richest in the survey at each redshift. Passive fractions rise from 42-13 +10 per cent at z ~ 1.6 to 80-9 +12 per cent at z ~ 1.3 and 88-3 +4 per cent at z < 1.1, outpacing the change in passive fraction in the field. Environmental quenching efficiency rises dramatically from 16-19 +15 per cent at z ~ 1.6 to 62-15 +21 per cent at z~1.3 and 73-7 +8 per cent at z ≲ 1.1. This work is the first to show direct observational evidence for a rapid increase in the strength of environmental quenching in galaxy clusters at z ~ 1.5, where simulations show cluster-mass haloes undergo non-linear collapse and virialization.https://academic.oup.com/mnrasl/article/465/1/L104/241728

    Across the Indian Ocean: a remarkable example of trans-oceanic dispersal in an austral mygalomorph spider [dataset]

    The Migidae are a family of austral trapdoor spiders known to show a highly restricted and disjunct distribution pattern. Here, we aim to investigate the phylogeny and historical biogeography of the group, which was previously thought to be vicariant in origin, and examine the biogeographic origins of the genus Moggridgea using a dated multi-gene phylogeny. Moggridgea specimens were sampled from southern Australia and Africa, and Bertmainus was sampled from Western Australia. Sanger sequencing methods were used to generate a robust six marker molecular dataset consisting of the nuclear genes 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, XPNPEP3 and H3 and the mitochondrial gene COI. Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood methods were used to analyse the dataset, and the key dispersal nodes were dated using BEAST. Based on our data, we demonstrate that Moggridgea rainbowi from Kangaroo Island, Australia is a valid member of the otherwise African genus Moggridgea. Molecular clock dating analyses show that the inter-specific divergence of M. rainbowi from African congeners is between 2.27–16.02 million years ago (Mya). This divergence date significantly post-dates the separation of Africa from Gondwana (95 Mya) and therefore does not support a vicariant origin for Australian Moggridgea. It also pre-dates human colonisation of Kangaroo Island, a result which is further supported by the intra-specific divergence date of 1.10–6.39 Mya between separate populations on Kangaroo Island. These analyses provide strong support for the hypothesis that Moggridgea colonised Australia via long-distance trans-Indian Ocean dispersal, representing the first such documented case in a mygalomorph spider

    Study of the dependence of 198Au half-life on source geometry

    We report the results of an experiment to determine whether the half-life of \Au{198} depends on the shape of the source. This study was motivated by recent suggestions that nuclear decay rates may be affected by solar activity, perhaps arising from solar neutrinos. If this were the case then the β\beta-decay rates, or half-lives, of a thin foil sample and a spherical sample of gold of the same mass and activity could be different. We find for \Au{198}, (T1/2)foil/(T1/2)sphere=0.999±0.002(T_{1/2})_{\rm foil}/(T_{1/2})_{\rm sphere} = 0.999 \pm 0.002, where T1/2T_{1/2} is the mean half-life. The maximum neutrino flux at the sample in our experiments was several times greater than the flux of solar neutrinos at the surface of the Earth. We show that this increase in flux leads to a significant improvement in the limits that can be inferred on a possible solar contribution to nuclear decays.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Ultra-high resolution X-ray structure of orthorhombic bovine pancreatic Ribonuclease A at 100K

    The crystal structure of orthorhombic Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease A has been determined to 0.85 Å resolution using low temperature, 100 K, synchrotron X-ray data collected at 16000 keV (λ = 0.77 Å). This is the first ultra-high-resolution structure of a native form of Ribonuclease A to be reported. Refinement carried out with anisotropic displacement parameters, stereochemical restraints, inclusion of H atoms in calculated positions, five SO2−4 moieties, eleven ethanol molecules and 293 water molecules, converged with final R values of R1(Free) = 0.129 (4279 reflections) and R1 = 0.112 (85,346 reflections). The refined structure was deposited in the Protein Data Bank as structure 7p4r. Conserved waters, using four high resolution structures, have been investigated. Cluster analysis identified clusters of water molecules that are associated with the active site of Bovine Ribonuclease A. Particular attention has been paid to making detailed comparisons between the present structure and other high quality Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease A X-ray crystal structures with special reference to the deposited classic monoclinic structure 3RN3 Howlin et al. (Acta Crystallogr A 45:851–861, 1989). Detailed studies of various aspects of hydrogen bonding and conformation have been carried out with particular reference to active site residues Lys-1, Lys-7, Gln-11, His-12, Lys-41, Asn-44, Thr-45, Lys-66, His-119 and Ser-123. For the two histidine residues in the active site the initial electron density map gives a clear confirmation that the position of His-12 is very similar in the orthorhombic structure to that in 3RN3. In 3RN3 His-119 exhibited poor electron density which was modelled and refined as two distinct sites, A (65%) and B (35%) but with respect to His-119 in the present ultra-high resolution orthorhombic structure there is clear electron density which was modelled and refined as a single conformation distinct from either conformation A or B in 3RN3. Other points of interest include Serine-32 which is disordered at the end of the sidechain in the present orthorhombic form but has been modelled as a single form in 3RN3. Lysine-66: there is density indicating a possible conformation for this residue. However, the density is relatively weak, and the conformation is unclear. Three types of amino acid representation in the ultra-high resolution electron density are examined: (i) sharp with very clearly resolved features, for example Lys-37; (ii) well resolved but clearly divided into two conformations which are well behaved in the refinement, both having high quality geometry, for example Tyr-76; (iii) poor density and difficult or impossible to model, an example is Lys-31 for which density is missing except for Cβ. The side chains of Gln-11, His-12, Lys-41, Thr-45 and His-119 are generally recognised as being closely involved in the enzyme activity. It has also been suggested that Lys-7, Asp-44, Lys-66, Phe-120, Asp-121 and Ser-123 may also have possible roles in this mechanism. A molecular dynamics study on both structures has investigated the conformations of His-119 which was modelled as two conformations in 3RN3 but is observed to have a single clearly defined conformation in the present orthorhombic structure. MD has also been used to investigate Lys-31, Lys-41 and Ser32. The form of the Ribonuclease A enzyme used in both the present study and in 3RN3 (Howlin et al. in Acta Crystallogr A 45:851–861, 1989) includes a sulphate anion which occupies approximately the same location as the PO2−4 phosphate group in protein nucleotide complexes (Borkakoti et al. in J Mol Biol 169:743–755, 1983). The present structure contains 5 SO2−4 groups SO41151–SO41155 two of which, SO41152 and SO41153 are disordered, SO41152 being in the active site, and 11 EtOH molecules, EOH A 201–EOH A 211 all of which have good geometry. H atoms were built into the EtOH molecules geometrically. Illustrations of these features in the present structure are included here. The sulphates are presumably present in the material purchased for use in the present study. 293 water molecules are included in the present structure compared to 134 in 3RN3 (Howlin et al. in Acta Crystallogr A 45:851–861, 1989)

    X-ray structure of a putative reaction intermediate of 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase

    The X-ray structure of yeast 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase, in which the catalytic site of the enzyme is complexed with a putative cyclic intermediate composed of both substrate moieties, has been solved at 0.16 nm (1.6 Å) resolution. The cyclic intermediate is bound covalently to Lys(263) with the amino group of the aminomethyl side chain ligated to the active-site zinc ion in a position normally occupied by a catalytic hydroxide ion. The cyclic intermediate is catalytically competent, as shown by its turnover in the presence of added substrate to form porphobilinogen. The findings, combined with those of previous studies, are consistent with a catalytic mechanism in which the C–C bond linking both substrates in the intermediate is formed before the C–N bond
