    International audienceThis paper presents a set of experimental results concerning the sliding mode control of an electro-pneumatic system. Two discrete-time control strategies are considered for the implementation of the discontinuous part of the sliding mode controller: explicit and implicit discretizations. While the explicit implementation is known to generate numerical chattering [6], [7], [12], [13], the implicit one is expected to significantly reduce chattering while keeping the accuracy. The experimental results reported in this work remarkably confirm that the implicit discrete-time sliding mode supersedes the explicit ones, with several important features: chattering in the control input is almost eliminated (while the explicit and saturated controllers behave like high-frequency bang-bang inputs), the input magnitude depends only on the perturbation size and is largely independent of the controller gain and sampling time

    Health-related quality of life and mortality in the 'Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra' prospective cohort study

    Objective: To study the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and all-cause mortality in a healthy middle-aged Mediterranean cohort. Methods: We included 15,390 participants –mean age 42.8 years at first HRQoL ascertainment, all university graduates–. HRQoL was assessed with the self-administered Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36) twice, with a 4-year gap. We used multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models to address the relation between self-reported health and Physical or Mental Component Summary (PCS-36 or MCS-36) and mortality, and their interaction with prior comorbidities or adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet). Results: Over 8.7 years of median follow-up time, 266 deaths were identified. Hazard ratio (HR) for the excellent vs. poor/fair category in self-reported health was 0.30 (95 % confidence interval (CI), 0.16–0.57) in the model with repeated measurements of HRQoL. Both the PCS-36 (HRquartile4(Q4)vs.Q1 0.57 [95%CI, 0.36–0.90], ptrend < 0.001; HRper+10points: 0.64 [95%CI, 0.54–0.75]) and the MCS-36 (HRQ4vs.Q1 0.67 [95%CI, 0.46–0.97], ptrend = 0.025; HRper+10points: 0.86 [95%CI, 0.74–0.99]) were inversely associated with mortality in the model with repeated measurements of HRQoL. Previous comorbidities or adherence to the MedDiet did not modify these associations.     Preliminary results on the application of the aminoacid racemization technique in the Murcia Region (SE Iberian Peninsula) and their interest in paleoseismological research

    Geochronology is a critical issue in paleoseismological research. The aminoacid racemization technique shows important advantages respect to more traditional dating methods; not just for the lower costs and promptness, also because the object to analyze is relatively frequent, in this study: terrestrial gastropods. Furthermore, the costs of the analysis are by far faster and cheaper compared to other dating techniques. Racemization results allow comparing the relative age from different sedimentary units from one trench to another.Additionally, the racemization technique can also be used as a geochronological tool, provided a calibration curve has been first obtained for the particular climate for the area and, ideally, for a particular genus. In this study we show the results obtained from the analysis of 40 samples of terrestrial gastropods from 7 different trenches located in the Murcia Region (SE Spain). Making use of the D/L ratio of aspartic acid we show the coherence found between relative stratigraphic ages and the racemization age. Finally, we show a provisional conversion equation between age of racemization, obtained from Torres et al.     Methodology to determine infiltration rates in agricultural soils based on weighing lysimetry

    [SPA] Un experimento fue conducido para cuantificar la tasa de un suelo franco limoso a partir de los datos de un lisímetro de pesada, analizando diferentes eventos de lluvia con dos condiciones de humedad del suelo, por encima y por debajo de la capacidad de campo. La información detallada de los datos permitió dibujar y conocer a detalle la curva de capacidad de infiltración del suelo. Los resultados mostraron una tasa de infiltración máxima 22,9 % mayor cuando el suelo estaba por debajo del contenido de humedad a capacidad de campo que cuando este estaba por encima de dicha humedad. En cuanto a la tasa básica o estable fue similar para ambos casos (desviación estándar de 0,03 mm h-1). Con estos resultados puede asumirse que un suelo con menor contenido de humedad presenta mayor capacidad de infiltración inicial pero que siempre tienden a una misma tasa estable. [ENG] An experiment was conducted to quantify the rate of a silty loam soil from the minute data of a weighing lysimeter, analysing different rainfall events with two soil moisture conditions, above and below field capacity. The detailed information of the data allowed to draw and know the infiltration capacity curve of the soil. The results showed a maximum infiltration rate 22.9 % higher when the soil was below the moisture content at field capacity than when the soil was above this moisture content. The basic or stable rate was similar for both cases (standard deviation of 0.03 mm h-1).     2012PID-UB/117El projecte ha consistit en la introducció d’innovacions docents en dues assignatures del Grau de Pedagogia de la Facultat de Pedagogia ('Informàtica aplicada a la recerca educativa' i 'Orientació i Gènere') i una assignatura del Grau de Mestre en Educació Infantil de la Facultat de Formació del Professorat ('Observació i Innovació a l'aula) promovent la investigació formativa com a eina pedagògica. Conscients que la configuració de l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior planteja un gran repte per a l'aprofundiment de la investigació en el nou marc formatiu universitari, aquest projecte ha volgut validar mètodes d'ensenyament per al desenvolupament competencial (De Miguel, et al., 2006) que operativitzen la investigació formativa: l'Aprenentatge Basat en Problemes, l'Aprenentatge orientat a Projectes i l'ús de les narratives digitals (Rodríguez i Londoño, 2009) per fomentar l'autoaprenentatge i l'autogestió del coneixement. Els resultats obtinguts evidencien el valor d'aquestes estratègies pedagògiques instrumentalitzades per la investigació formativa per a l'assoliment de tres competències transversals comunes a la Universitat de Barcelona (Vicerrectorat de Política Docent, 2008): el compromís ètic, la capacitat d'aprenentatge i responsabilitat, i la capacitat comunicativa.     The Int7G24A variant of transforming growth factor-beta receptor type I is a risk factor for colorectal cancer in the male Spanish population: a case-control study

    Background: The Int7G24A variant of transforming growth factor-beta receptor type I (TGFBR1) has been shown to increase the risk for kidney, ovarian, bladder, lung and breast cancers. Its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) has not been established. The aims of this study were to assess the association of TGFBR1*Int7G24A variant with CRC occurrence, patient age, gender, tumour location and stage. Methods: We performed a case-control study with 504 cases of sporadic CRC; and 504 non-cancerous age, gender and ethnically matched controls. Genotyping analysis was performed using allelic discrimination assay by real time PCR. Results: The Int7G24A variant was associated with increased CRC incidence in an additive model of inheritance (P for trend = 0.005). No significant differences were found between Int7G24A genotypes and tumour location or stage. Interestingly, the association of the Int7G24A variant with CRC risk was significant in men (odds ratio 4.10 with 95% confidence intervals 1.41-11.85 for homozygous individuals; P for trend = 0.00023), but not in women. We also observed an increase in susceptibility to CRC for individuals aged less than 70 years.     Influence of coronary artery disease and subclinical atherosclerosis related polymorphisms on the risk of atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis

    A genetic component influences the development of atherosclerosis in the general population and also in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, genetic polymorphisms associated with atherosclerosis in the general population are not always involved in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in RA. Accordingly, a study in North-American RA patients did not show the association reported in the general population of coronary artery disease with a series of relevant polymorphisms (TCF21, LPA, HHIPL1, RASD1-PEMT, MRPS6, CYP17A1-CNNM2-NT5C2, SMG6-SRR, PHACTR1, WDR12 and COL4A1-COL4A2). In the present study, we assessed the potential association of these polymorphisms with CVD in Southern European RA patients. We also assessed if polymorphisms implicated in the increased risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in non-rheumatic Caucasians (ZHX2, PINX1, SLC17A4, LRIG1 and LDLR) may influence the risk for CVD in RA. 2,609 Spanish patients were genotyped by TaqMan assays. Subclinical atherosclerosis was determined in 1,258 of them by carotid ultrasonography (assessment of carotid intima media thickness and presence/absence of carotid plaques). No statistically significant differences were found when each polymorphism was assessed according to the presence/absence of cardiovascular events and subclinical atherosclerosis, after adjustment for potential confounder factors.
