    Student mentoring program at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Seville (2006/07 - present): SWOT analysis carried out by mentor students

    El “Programa de Alumnos Tutores” (LCC, Facultad de Farmacia US) se viene realizando ininterrumpidamente desde 2006/07 hasta la actualidad. Propósito: tutela de alumnos de nuevo ingreso por parte de alumnos de cursos superiores (AATT) bajo la supervisión de Profesores Tutores. Pretende generar una actitud responsable en los AATT y favorecerles el desarrollo de habilidades sociales. El objetivo de este trabajo es recoger las opiniones de los AATT (algunos comenzaron en ediciones anteriores y continúan desinteresadamente). Se aborda mediante un análisis DAFO. Conclusión: se han detectado factores estratégicos críticos, para una vez identificados, usarlos y apoyar en ellos la marcha del “Programa de Alumnos Tutores”, consolidando las fortalezas, minimizando las debilidades, aprovechando las ventajas de las oportunidades, y eliminando o reduciendo las amenazas.The "Student Mentor Program" (Faculty of Pharmacy, US) has been running since 2006/07 – to present. Purpose: to mentor new students by senior students (Mentor Students) under the supervision of mentor professors. It aims to generate a responsible attitude in students and tutors to encourage the development of social skills. Objective: To collect the views of mentor students (some started in previous years and continue to selflessly), through a SWOT analysis. Conclusion: it has been found critical strategic factors. It intends to use these factors for strengthening the "Student Mentor Program"

    Background Chronic diseases account for nearly 60% of deaths around the world. The extent of this silent epidemic has not met determined responses in governments, policies or professionals in order to transform old Health Care Systems, configured for acute diseases. There is a large list of research about alternative models for people with chronic conditions, many of them with an advanced practice nurse as a key provider, as case management. But some methodological concerns raise, above all, the design of the intervention (intensity, frequency, components, etc). Methods/Design Objectives: General: To develop the first and second phases (theorization and modeling) for designing a multifaceted case-management intervention in people with chronic conditions (COPD and heart failure) and their caregivers. Specific aims: 1) To identify key events in people living with chronic disease and their relation with the Health Care System, from their point of view. 2) To know the coping mechanisms developed by patients and their caregivers along the story with the disease. 3) To know the information processing and its utilization in their interactions with health care providers. 4) To detect potential unmet needs and the ways deployed by patients and their caregivers to resolve them. 5) To obtain a description from patients and caregivers, about their itineraries along the Health Care System, in terms of continuity, accessibility and comprehensiveness of care. 6) To build up a list of promising case-management interventions in patients with Heart Failure and COPD with this information in order to frame it into theoretical models for its reproducibility and conceptualization. 7) To undergo this list to expert judgment to assess its feasibility and pertinence in the Andalusian Health Care. Design: Qualitative research with two phases: For the first five objectives, a qualitative technique with biographic stories will be developed and, for the remaining objectives, an expert consensus through Delphi technique, on the possible interventions yielded from the first phase. The study will be developed in the provinces of Almería, Málaga and Granada in the Southern Spain, from patients included in the Andalusian Health Care Service database with the diagnosis of COPD or Heart Failure, with the collaboration of case manager nurses and general practitioners for the assessment of their suitability to inclusion criteria. Patients and caregivers will be interviewed in their homes or their Health Centers, with their family or their case manager nurse as mediator. Discussion First of a series of studies intended to design a case-management service for people with heart failure and COPD, in the Andalusian Health Care System, where case management has been implemented since 2002. Accordingly with the steps of a theoretical model for complex interventions, in this study, theorization and intervention modeling phases will be developed.This research was carried out with the support of one research grant, awarded by the Regional Health Ministry of Andalusia (Exp. 0222/2008

    Durante la primera década del siglo XXI los intereses de los turistas han cambiado y se han vuelto más sofisticados. Un nuevo tipo de turismo personalizado ha nacido y se ha consolidado. En esta nueva modalidad de turismo el cliente participa en la organización del mismo. La modalidad emergente de la actividad turística que ofrece mayor diversidad de opciones es el turismo rural (turismo gastronómico, deportivo, cinegético, etc.). Estas opciones, desarrolladas en áreas rurales, permiten a los visitantes entre otras cuestiones estar en contacto con la naturaleza y, al mismo tiempo, disfrutar el patrimonio cultural y conocer las costumbres arraigadas en la vida cotidiana de los habitantes de estas zonas geográficas. Este trabajo presenta un análisis de la relación entre los productos alimenticios asociados a denominaciones de origen e indicaciones geográficas protegidas (D.O.P. e I.G.P.) y la potencialidad del turismo gastronómico. Para ello, se revisan las ventajas e inconvenientes que aporta el desarrollo de este tipo de turismo en Andalucía mediante un análisis DAFO.During the first decade of the century the interests of tourists have changed and become more sophisticated. A new type of personalized tourism was born and has been consolidated. In this new kind of tourism the client is involved in organizing it. The emerging form of tourism that offers greater range of options is rural tourism (gastronomic tourism, sporting, hunting, etc.). These options, developed in rural areas, allowing visitors among other issues get in touch with nature and at the same time enjoy the cultural heritage and know the customs rooted in the everyday life of the inhabitants of these geographic areas. This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between food products associated with designations of origin and protected geographical indications (PDO and PGI) and the potential of culinary tourism. To do this, we review the advantages and disadvantages provided by the development of this type of tourism in Andalusia through a SWOT analysis

    Integrating multicriteria decision analysis and scenario planning : review and extension

    Scenario planning and multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) are two key management science tools used in strategic planning. In this paper, we explore the integration of these two approaches in a coherent manner, recognizing that each adds value to the implementation of the other. Various approaches that have been adopted for such integration are reviewed, with a primary focus on the process of constructing preferences both within and between scenarios. Biases that may be introduced by inappropriate assumptions during such processes are identified, and used to motivate a framework for integrating MCDA and scenario thinking, based on applying MCDA concepts across a range of "metacriteria" (combinations of scenarios and primary criteria). Within this framework, preferences according to each primary criterion can be expressed in the context of different scenarios. The paper concludes with a hypothetical but non-trivial example of agricultural policy planning in a developing country

    Differential contributions of subthalamic beta rhythms and 1/f broadband activity to motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

    Excessive beta oscillatory activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is linked to Parkinson's Disease (PD) motor symptoms. However, previous works have been inconsistent regarding the functional role of beta activity in untreated Parkinsonian states, questioning such role. We hypothesized that this inconsistency is due to the influence of electrophysiological broadband activity -a neurophysiological indicator of synaptic excitation/inhibition ratio- that could confound measurements of beta activity in STN recordings. Here we propose a data-driven, automatic and individualized mathematical model that disentangles beta activity and 1/f broadband activity in the STN power spectrum, and investigate the link between these individual components and motor symptoms in thirteen Parkinsonian patients. We show, using both modeled and actual data, how beta oscillatory activity significantly correlates with motor symptoms (bradykinesia and rigidity) only when broadband activity is not considered in the biomarker estimations, providing solid evidence that oscillatory beta activity does correlate with motor symptoms in untreated PD states as well as the significant impact of broadband activity. These findings emphasize the importance of data-driven models and the identification of better biomarkers for characterizing symptom severity and closed-loop applications

    Spectral characterization of laser-accelerated protons with CR-39 nuclear track detector

    CR-39 nuclear track material is frequently used for the detection of protons accelerated in laser-plasma interactions. The measurement of track densities allows for determination of particle angular distributions, and information on the kinetic energy can be obtained by the use of passive absorbers. We present a precise method of measuring spectral distributions of laser-accelerated protons in a single etching and analysis process. We make use of a one-to-one relation between proton energy and track size and present a precise calibration based on monoenergetic particle beams. While this relation is limited to proton energies below 1 MeV, we show that the range of spectral measurements can be significantly extended by simultaneous use of absorbers of suitable thicknesses. Examples from laser-plasma interactions are presented, and quantitative results on proton energies and particle numbers are compared to those obtained from a time-of-flight detector. The spectrum end points of continuous energy distributions have been determined with both detector types and coincide within 50-100 keV
