    Optical spin transfer in ferromagnetic semiconductors

    Circularly polarized laser pulses that excite electron-hole pairs across the band gap of (III,Mn)V ferromagnetic semiconductors can be used to manipulate and to study collective magnetization dynamics. The initial spin orientation of a photocarrier in a (III,V) semiconductors is determined by the polarization state of the laser. We show that the photocarrier spin can be irreversibly transferred to the collective magnetization, whose dynamics can consequently be flexibly controlled by suitably chosen laser pulses. As illustrations we demonstrate the feasibility of all optical ferromagnetic resonance and optical magnetization reorientation.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    State-of-the-art techniques for calculating spectral functions in models for correlated materials

    The dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) has become a standard technique for the study of strongly correlated models and materials overcoming some of the limitations of density functional approaches based on local approximations. An important step in this method involves the calculation of response functions of a multiorbital impurity problem which is related to the original model. Recently there has been considerable progress in the development of techniques based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and related matrix product states (MPS) implying a substantial improvement to previous methods.     Methods for autonomous wristband placement with a search-and-rescue aerial manipulator

    A new robotic system for Search And Rescue (SAR) operations based on the automatic wristband placement on the victims’ arm, which may provide identification, beaconing and remote sensor readings for continuous health monitoring. This paper focuses on the development of the automatic target localization and the device placement using an unmanned aerial manipulator. The automatic wrist detection and localization system uses an RGB-D camera and a convolutional neural network based on the region faster method (Faster R-CNN). A lightweight parallel delta manipulator with a large workspace has been built, and a new design of a wristband in the form of a passive detachable gripper, is presented, which under contact, automatically attaches to the human, while disengages from the manipulator. A new trajectory planning method has been used to minimize the torques caused by the external forces during contact, which cause attitude perturbations. Experiments have been done to evaluate the machine learning method for detection and location, and for the assessment of the performance of the trajectory planning method. The results show how the VGG-16 neural network provides a detection accuracy of 67.99%. Moreover, simulation experiments have been done to show that the new trajectories minimize the perturbations to the aerial platform.Universidad de Málaga.     We re-express the quantum Calogero-Sutherland model for the Lie algebra E7 and the particular value of the coupling constant K=1 by using the fundamental irreducible characters of the algebra as dynamical variables. For that, we need to develop a systematic procedure to obtain all the Clebsch-Gordan series required to perform the change of variables. We describe how the resulting quantum Hamiltonian operator can be used to compute more characters and Clebsch-Gordan series for this exceptional algebra.Comment: 37 pages, 1 figur

    Psychometric properties and factor structure of the brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives among Spanish smokers from the general population

    Introduction: The brief version of the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (B-WISDM) is a well-established instrument to measure the multidimensional nature of nicotine dependence. However, no previous research has assessed its psychometric properties in the Spanish context. The aim of the present study was to analyze the factor structure and measurement invariance across gender of this instrument among Spanish smokers from the general population. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed 480 smokers through an online questionnaire including information on tobacco use and several nicotine dependence measures. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to assess the factorial structure of the Spanish B-WISDM, its internal consistency, measurement invariance across gender and convergent validity with the Fagerstršom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the Glover-Nilsson Smoking Behavioral Questionnaire (GN-SBQ) scores. Results: Results indicate that the eleven correlated factors solution had a better fit when compared to the other tested models (two correlated factors and two second-order factors with eleven first-order correlated factors solution), remaining such structure invariant across gender. Internal consistency of the scale was high (α =0.950; dimension α values ranged between 0.657 and 0.921). Overall scores and dimensions of the scale significantly and positively correlated with other nicotine dependence measures (except for Social/Environmental Goads and FTND). Conclusions: This is the first version of the B-WISDM validated to assess nicotine dependence with a multidimensional perspective within the Spanish culture. Results show adequate psychometric properties regarding its factor structure and measurement invariance across gender, supporting its utility to evaluate the motives driving tobacco use among Spanish smokers from the general population

    Compaction caused by soil tillage and seedbed preparation: effects on weed emergence in a barley crop

    El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue evaluar los efectos de la compactaciĂłn producida por la frecuencia de pases y el tipo de apero utilizado en la siembra del cereal, sobre la emergencia de las malas hierbas. Se utilizĂł un diseño en parcelas subdivididas con 4 repeticiones, con la labor primaria (fresa vs. cultivador) en parcelas principales y el pase de rulo (liso vs. pratenses) en subparcelas. Se tomaron datos de malas hierbas (densidad, biomasa) y de propiedades fĂ­sicas del suelo (compactaciĂłn, densidad aparente). Los resultados no han mostrado diferencias debidas a la labor primaria en ninguna de las variables analizadas, pero sĂ­ en funciĂłn del tipo y frecuencia de pases de rulo, observĂĄndose menor densidad y biomasa de malas hierbas cuanto mayor era el nĂșmero de pases de rulo, especialmente el liso, coincidiendo con los suelos mĂĄs compactados. Sin embargo, parece existir un lĂ­mite en el cual dejan de producirse efectos significativos debido a una sobrecompactaciĂłn (e.g. doble pase de rulo y zona de rodada).The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the compaction produced by the frequency of passes and the type of implement used in seedbed preparation, on weed emergence. A split-plot design with 4 replications was used, with the primary tillage (cultivator vs. rotary tiller) in main plots and rolling (flat roller vs. Cambridge roller) in subplots. Weeds data (density, biomass) and soil physical properties (compaction, bulk density) were assessed. The results showed no differences due to the primary tillage in any of the analyzed variables. However, the type and frequency of roller passes resulted in significant differences in weed abundance, with lower weed density and biomass when the number of roller passes was greater (especially flat roller), which coincided with the higher compaction. However, it seems to be a limit at which significant effects no longer occur due to an overcompaction (e.g. double roller pass and tractor wheel traffic)

    Técnica de ImhÀuser en el pie zambo : resultados a medio y largo plazo

    Se revisan un total de 60 pies con equinovaro congĂ©nito pertenecientes a 48 pacientes, todos con un seguimiento superior a 5 años. En todos los casos se realizĂł un tratamiento combinado: ortopĂ©dico (manipulaciones y enyesados desde el nacimiento) y quirĂșrgico (correcciones segĂșn el mĂ©todo de ImhĂ€user modificado). Se valorĂł morfolĂłgica, funcional y radiogrĂĄficamente cada caso. En la valoraciĂłn global sĂłlo 1 caso fue considerado malo, 13 regulares (21,6%), 6 por pies planos valgos, 3 por pronato de antepiĂ© y 4 por adducto de antepiĂ©, y 12 buenos (20%), aunque presentaban alguna alteraciĂłn morfolĂłgica o funcional mĂ­nima, y 34 excelentes (56,6%). Se concluye que: 1) la tĂ©cnica de ImhĂ€user ofrece en este trabajo el 77% de excelentes y buenos resultados; 2) el 2.° y 3.cr se pueden resumir en uno solo, el hemitrasplante del tibial anterior, y 3) los resultados clĂ­nicos, morfolĂłgicos y funcionales son superiores a los radiogrĂĄficos.—We cheked 42 patients with club-feet (60 feet), all of them with follow-up over 5 years. All the patients received a mixed treatment: orthopaedic (manipulation and plastering) and surgical (ImhĂ€user technique modified). We evaluated morphological, functional and radiographic parameters. In the overall evaluation only one of the cases was considered bad result; 13 (21.6%) fair results, 6 with valgus flat feet, 3 with pronatus forefoot and 4 with adductus forefoot; 12 (20%) good results, with a minimal morphologic or functional alterations; 34 (56.6%) were excellents results. Conclutions: 1) ImhĂ€user technic had 77% of good or excellent results in this work; 2) the second and third ImhĂ€user surgical times can be summarized in only one: the external hemitrasplant of the tibial anterior tendon, and 3) clinics, morphologics and functional results are better than radiographics results
