    The author has identified the following significant results. Within a restricted zenith sun angle range of 35 - 50 degrees, it was empirically observed that canopy reflectance is mainly Lambertian. Reflectance changes with crop stage were simple shifts in scale in the sun angle range. It was noted that sun angle variations depend on canopy characteristics. Effects of the vegetative canopy were most pronounced at the larger solar zenith angles (20 %). The linear sun angle correction coefficients demonstrate a dependency on both crop stage (15-20 %) and crop type (10-20 %). The use of canopy reflectance modeling allowed for the generation of a simulated data set over an extremely broad envelope of sun angles

    Excitation of Single Quasiparticles in a Small Superconducting Al Island Connected to Normal-Metal Leads by Tunnel Junctions

    We investigate the dynamics of individual quasiparticle excitations on a small superconducting aluminum island connected to normal metallic leads by tunnel junctions. We find the island to be free of excitations within the measurement resolution. This allows us to show that the residual heating, which typically limits experiments on superconductors, has an ultralow value of less than 0.1 aW. By injecting electrons with a periodic gate voltage, we probe electron-phonon interaction and relaxation down to a single quasiparticle excitation pair, with a measured recombination rate of 16 kHz. Our experiment yields a strong test of BCS theory in aluminum as the results are consistent with it without free parameters.Peer reviewe

    Prognostic Impact of Immunoglobulin Kappa C (IGKC) in Early Breast Cancer

    We studied the prognostic impact of tumor immunoglobulin kappa C (IGKC) mRNA expression as a marker of the humoral immune system in the FinHer trial patient population, where 1010 patients with early breast cancer were randomly allocated to either docetaxel-containing or vinorelbine-containing adjuvant chemotherapy. HER2-positive patients were additionally allocated to either trastuzumab or no trastuzumab. Hormone receptor-positive patients received tamoxifen. IGKC was evaluated in 909 tumors using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and the influence on distant disease-free survival (DDFS) was examined using univariable and multivariable Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier estimates. Interactions were analyzed using Cox regression. IGKC expression, included as continuous variable, was independently associated with DDFS in a multivariable analysis also including age, molecular subtype, grade, and pT and pN stage (HR 0.930, 95% CI 0.870–0.995, p = 0.034). An independent association with DDFS was also found in a subset analysis of triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) (HR 0.843, 95% CI 0.724–0.983, p = 0.029), but not in luminal (HR 0.957, 95% CI 0.867–1.056, p = 0.383) or HER2-positive (HR 0.933, 95% CI 0.826–1.055, p = 0.271) cancers. No significant interaction between IGKC and chemotherapy or trastuzumab administration was detected (Pinteraction = 0.855 and 0.684, respectively). These results show that humoral immunity beneficially influences the DDFS of patients with early TNBC

    Background: The clinical importance of tumor-infiltrating cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) T cells is incompletely understood in early breast cancer. We investigated the clinical significance of CD4, forkhead box P3 (FOXP3), and B cell attracting chemokine leukocyte chemoattractant-ligand (C-X-C motif) 13 (CXCL13) in early breast cancer. Methods: The study is based on the patient population of the randomized FinHer trial, where 1010 patients with early breast cancer were randomly allocated to adjuvant chemotherapy containing either docetaxel or vinorelbine, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive patients were also allocated to trastuzumab or no trastuzumab. Breast cancer CD4, FOXP3, and CXCL13 contents were evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and their influence on distant disease-free survival (DDFS) was examined using univariable and multivariable Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier estimates in the entire cohort and in selected molecular subgroups. Interactions between variables were analyzed using Cox regression. The triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subset of the HE10/97 randomized trial was used for confirmation. Results: High CXCL13 was associated with favorable DDFS in univariable analysis, and independently in multivariable analysis (HR 0.44, 95% CI 0.29-0.67, P Conclusions: The results provide a high level of evidence that humoral immunity influences the survival outcomes of patients with early breast cancer, in particular of those with TNBC.Peer reviewe

    Genetic selection for bovine chromosome 18 haplotypes associated with divergent somatic cell score affects postpartum reproductive and metabolic performance

    The susceptibility of animals to periparturient diseases has a great effect on the economic efficiency of dairy industries, on the frequency of antibiotic treatment, and on animal welfare. The use of selection for breeding cows with reduced susceptibility to diseases offers a sustainable tool to improve dairy cattle farming. Several studies have focused on the association of distinct bovine chromosome 18 genotypes or haplotypes with performance traits. The aim of this study was to test whether selection of Holstein Friesian heifers via SNP genotyping for alternative paternal chromosome 18 haplotypes associated with favorable (Q) or unfavorable (q) somatic cell scores influences postpartum reproductive and metabolic diseases. Thirty-six heifers (18 Q and 18 q) were monitored from 3 wk before calving until necropsy on d 39 (± 4 d) after calving. Health status and rectal temperature were measured daily, and body condition score and body weight were assessed once per week. Blood samples were drawn twice weekly, and levels of insulin, nonesterified fatty acids, insulin-like growth factor-I, growth hormone, and β-hydroxybutyrate were measured. Comparisons between the groups were performed using Fisher's exact test, chi-squared test, and the GLIMMIX procedure in SAS. Results showed that Q-heifers had reduced incidence of metritis compared with q-heifers and were less likely to develop fever. Serum concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate were lower and insulin-like growth factor-I plasma concentrations were higher in Q- compared with q-heifers. However, the body condition score and withers height were comparable between haplotypes, but weight loss tended to be lower in Q-heifers compared with q-heifers. No differences between the groups were detected concerning retained fetal membranes, uterine involution, or onset of cyclicity. In conclusion, selection of chromosome 18 haplotypes associated with a reduced somatic cell score resulted in a decreased incidence of postpartum reproductive and metabolic diseases in this study. The presented data add to the existing knowledge aimed at avoiding negative consequences of genetic selection strategies in dairy cattle farming. The underlying causal mechanisms modulated by haplotypes in the targeted genomic region and immune competence necessitate further investigation

    Current Approaches to the Management of Sentinel Node Procedures in Early Vulvar Cancer in Germany : A Web-Based Nationwide Analysis of Practices

    Background: Lymph node involvement is the most important prognostic factor for recurrence and survival in vulvar cancer. Sentinel node (SN) procedure can be offered in well-selected patients with early vulvar cancer. This study aimed to assess current management practices with respect to the sentinel node procedure in women with early vulvar cancer in Germany. Methods: A Web-based survey was conducted. Questionnaires were e-mailed to 612 gynecology departments. Data were summarized as frequencies and analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: A total of 222 hospitals (36.27%) responded to the invitation to participate. Among the responders, 9.5% did not offer the SN procedure. However, 79.5% evaluated SNs by ultrastaging. In vulvar cancer of the midline with unilateral localized positive SN, 49.1% and 48.6% of respondents, respectively, would perform ipsilateral or bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection. Repeat SN procedure was performed by 16.2% of respondents. For isolated tumor cells (ITCs) or micrometastases, 28.1% and 60.5% of respondents, respectively, would perform inguinal lymph node dissection, whereas 19.3% and 23.8%, respectively, would opt for radiation without further surgical intervention. Notably, 50.9% of respondents would not initiate any further therapy and 15.1% would opt for expectant management. Conclusions: The majority of German hospitals implement the SN procedure. However, only 79.5% of respondents performed ultrastaging and only 28.1% were aware that ITC may affect survival in vulvar cancer. There is a need to ensure that the management of vulvar cancer follows the latest recommendations and clinical evidence. Deviations from state-of-the-art management should only be after a detailed discussion with the concerned patient

    A systematic review of comorbidities and outcomes of adult patients with pleural infection

    BACKGROUND: Pleural infection remains an important cause of mortality. This study aimed to investigate worldwide patterns of pre-existing comorbidities and clinical outcomes of patients with pleural infection. METHODS: Studies reporting on adults with pleural infection between 2000 and 2017 were identified from a search of Embase and Medline. Papers reporting exclusively on tuberculous, fungal or post pneumonectomy infection were excluded. Two reviewers assessed 20 980 records for eligibility. RESULTS: 211 studies met the inclusion criteria. 134 papers (227 898 patients, mean age 52.8 years) reported comorbidity and/or outcome data. The majority of studies were retrospective observational cohorts (n=104, 78%) and the most common region of reporting was East Asia (n=33, 24%) followed by North America (n=27, 20%).85 papers (50 756 patients) reported comorbidity. The median percentage prevalence of any comorbidity was 72% (IQR 58-83%), with respiratory illness (20%, 16-32%) and cardiac illness (19%, 15-27%) most commonly reported. 125 papers (192 298 patients) reported outcome data. The median length of stay was 19 days (IQR 13-27) and median in-hospital or 30-day mortality was 4% (IQR 1-11%).In regions with high-income economies (n=100, 74%) patients were older (mean 56.5 versus 42.5 years, p<0.0001), but there were no significant differences in prevalence of pre-existing comorbidity nor in length of hospital stay or mortality. CONCLUSION: Patients with pleural infection have high levels of comorbidity and long hospital stays. Most reported data are from high-income economy settings. Data from lower-income regions is needed to better understand regional trends and enable optimal resource provision going forward

    Geohydrology of the High Plains Aquifer In Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming

    The High Plains aquifer, which underlies about 174,000 square miles in parts of eight States, is the principal source of water in one of the Nation\u27s major agricultural areas. About 170,000 wells pump water from the aquifer to irrigate about 13 million acres in the High Plains. In 1978, the U.S. Geological Survey began a regional study of the High Plains aquifer to provide geohydrologic data and computer models of the aquifer needed to evaluate the effects of ground-water development. This report describes the geohydrology of the High Plains aquifer. The High Plains aquifer consists mainly of hydraulically connected geologic units of late Tertiary or Quaternary age. The upper Tertiary rocks include part of the Brule Formation, Arikaree Group, and Ogallala Formation. The Quaternary deposits included in the aquifer consist of alluvial, dune-sand, and valley-fill deposits. The Ogallala Formation, which underlies 134,000 square miles, is the principal geologic unit in the High Plains aquifer. The Ogallala consists of a heterogeneous sequence of clays, silts, sands, and gravels deposited by streams that flowed eastward from the mountains. Within the Ogallala, zones cemented with calcium carbonate are resistant to weathering and form escarpments that typically mark the boundary of the High Plains. The High Plains aquifer is, regionally, a water-table aquifer consisting mostly of near-surface sand and gravel deposits. The maximum saturated thickness of the aquifer is about 1,000 feet and averages 200 feet. Hydraulic conductivity and specific yield of the aquifer depend on sediment types, which vary widely both horizontally and vertically. Consequently, hydraulic conductivity and specific yield also are highly variable. Hydraulic conductivity ranges from less than 25 to 300 feet per day and averages 60 feet per day. Specific yield ranges from less than 10 to 30 percent and averages about 15 percent. Ground-water flow generally is from west to east, at an average rate of about 1 foot per day, and discharges naturally to streams and springs, and directly to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration. Precipitation is the principal source of recharge to the High Plains aquifer. Estimated recharge rates range from 0.024 inch per year in part of Texas to 6 inches per year in south-central Kansas. Typically, recharge estimates are greatest for sandy soils. The High Plains aquifer contains about 3.25 billion acre-feet of drainable water. About 66 percent of the water in storage is in Nebraska and about 12 percent is in Texas. New Mexico, the State with the smallest water resource in the High Plains, has only 1.5 percent of the volume of water in storage
