    The broad-band X-ray spectrum of the blazar PKS B1830-211 by Chandra and INTEGRAL

    In this paper we present a broad-band study of the X-ray emission of the blazar PKS1830-211 based on Chandra and Integral observations. Notwithstanding the high redshift (z=2.507), it is a bright X-ray source (F(2-10 keV)~10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}), due to gravitational lensing by an intervening galaxy at z=0.89. Previous X-ray observations attribute the observed absorption at E<2 keV to the lensing galaxy. Our analysis, although not in contrast with this hypothesis, suggests also the possibility of an intrinsic (ionized) absorption, taking place at the front side of the jet. This scenario is also supported by some evidence, in the same data, of a feature observed at 2.15 keV which can be interpreted as a blueshifted iron line (v/c ~ 0.18). The SED of PKS1830-211 can be well modelled by combining a Synchrotron Self-Compton component and an external source of photons to be scattered up to \gamma-ray energies by relativistic electrons moving outward in the jet. The main source of low energy photons is a dust torus at the temperature of 10^3 K as expected in MeV blazars.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV Blazar Mrk 421 during February - March 2003: X-ray and NIR correlated variability

    In the present paper, we have reported the result of simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV blazar Mrk 421 during February - March 2003. In this period, we have observed Mrk 421 using Pachmarhi Array of \v{C}erenkov Telescopes (PACT) of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Pachmarhi, India. Other simultaneous data were taken from the published literature and public data archives. We have analyzed the high quality X-ray (2-20 keV) observations from the NASA Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We have seen a possible correlated variability between X-ray and J band (1.25 μ\mu) near infrared (NIR) wavelength. This is the first case of X-ray and NIR correlated variability in Mrk 421 or any high energy peaked (HBL) blazar. The correlated variability reported here is indicating a similar origin for NIR and X-ray emission. The emission is not affected much by the environment of the surrounding medium around the central engine of the Mrk 421.     The new model of fitting the spectral energy distributions of Mkn 421 and Mkn 501

    The spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars has a double-humped shape that is usually interpreted as Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) model. The one zone SSC model is used broadly but cannot fit the high energy tail of SED very well. It need bulk Lorentz factor which is conflict with the observation. Furthermore one zone SSC model can not explain the entire spectrum. In the paper, we propose a new model that the high energy emission is produced by the accelerated protons in the blob with a small size and high magnetic field, the low energy radiation comes from the electrons in the expanded blob. Because the high and low energy photons are not produced at the same time, the requirement of large Doppler factor from pair production is relaxed. We present the fitting results of the SEDs for Mkn 501 during April 1997 and Mkn 421 during March 2001 respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figures, 1table. accepted for publication in Sciences in China --

    Multiwavelength Observations of LS I +61 303 with VERITAS, Swift and RXTE

    We present results from a long-term monitoring campaign on the TeV binary LSI +61 303 with VERITAS at energies above 500 GeV, and in the 2-10 keV hard X-ray bands with RXTE and Swift, sampling nine 26.5 day orbital cycles between September 2006 and February 2008. The binary was observed by VERITAS to be variable, with all integrated observations resulting in a detection at the 8.8 sigma (2006/2007) and 7.3 sigma (2007/2008) significance level for emission above 500 GeV. The source was detected during active periods with flux values ranging from 5 to 20% of the Crab Nebula, varying over the course of a single orbital cycle. Additionally, the observations conducted in the 2007-2008 observing season show marginal evidence (at the 3.6 sigma significance level) for TeV emission outside of the apastron passage of the compact object around the Be star. Contemporaneous hard X-ray observations with RXTE and Swift show large variability with flux values typically varying between 0.5 and 3.0*10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 over a single orbital cycle. The contemporaneous X-ray and TeV data are examined and it is shown that the TeV sampling is not dense enough to detect a correlation between the two bands.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, 2 table, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes

    The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then, sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio, IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as briefly reviewed in this paper. The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino detector during the year 2000.     Modelling rapid TeV variability of PKS 2155-304

    We present theoretical modelling for the very rapid TeV variability of PKS 2155--304 observed recently by the H.E.S.S. experiment. To explain the light-curve, where at least five flaring events were well observed, we assume five independent components of a jet that are characterized by slightly different physical parameters. An additional, significantly larger component is used to explain the emission of the source at long time scales. This component dominates the emission in the X-ray range, whereas the other components are dominant in the TeV range. The model used for our simulation describes precisely the evolution of the particle energy spectrum inside each component and takes into account light travel time effects. We show that a relatively simple synchrotron self-Compton scenario may explain this very rapid variability. Moreover, we find that absorption of the TeV emission inside the components due to the pair creation process is negligible.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, Accepted for publication in MNRAS the Main Journa

    Long-term monitoring of the TeV emission from Mrk 421 with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

    ARGO-YBJ is an air shower detector array with a fully covered layer of resistive plate chambers. It is operated with a high duty cycle and a large field of view. It continuously monitors the northern sky at energies above 0.3 TeV. In this paper, we report a long-term monitoring of Mrk 421 over the period from 2007 November to 2010 February. This source was observed by the satellite-borne experiments Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and Swift in the X-ray band. Mrk 421 was especially active in the first half of 2008. Many flares are observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands simultaneously. The gamma-ray flux observed by ARGO-YBJ has a clear correlation with the X-ray flux. No lag between the X-ray and gamma-ray photons longer than 1 day is found. The evolution of the spectral energy distribution is investigated by measuring spectral indices at four different flux levels. Hardening of the spectra is observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The gamma-ray flux increases quadratically with the simultaneously measured X-ray flux. All these observational results strongly favor the synchrotron self-Compton process as the underlying radiative mechanism.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure
