    Basel Compliance and Financial Stability: Evidence from Islamic Banks

    We find that compliance with the Basel Core Principles (BCPs) has a strong positive effect on the stability of conventional banks, and a positive but less pronounced effect on the stability of Islamic banks. We also find that the main impact of compliance is an increase in capital ratios, whereas other components of the Z-score are negatively affected. This reflects the desire of banks to be more closely integrated into the global financial system by holding higher capital ratios. The findings also justify the 2015 decision of the Islamic Financial Services Board to publish similar principles for Islamic banks

    Defining the importance of landscape metrics for large branchiopod biodiversity and conservation: the case of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands

    The deficiency in the distributional data of invertebrate taxa is one of the major impediments acting on the bias towards the low awareness of its conservation status. The present study sets a basic framework to understand the large branchiopods distribution in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Since the extensive surveys performed in the late 1980s, no more studies existed updating the information for the whole studied area. The present study fills the gap, gathering together all available information on large branchiopods distribution since 1995, and analysing the effect of human population density and several landscape characteristics on their distribution, taking into consideration different spatial scales (100 m, 1 km and 10 km). In overall, 28 large branchiopod taxa (17 anostracans, 7 notostracans and 4 spinicaudatans) are known to occur in the area. Approximately 30% of the sites hosted multiple species, with a maximum of 6 species. Significant positive co-occurring species pairs were found clustered together, forming 4 different associations of large branchiopod species.     AEDGE: Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration in Space

    Abstract: We propose in this White Paper a concept for a space experiment using cold atoms to search for ultra-light dark matter, and to detect gravitational waves in the frequency range between the most sensitive ranges of LISA and the terrestrial LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA/INDIGO experiments. This interdisciplinary experiment, called Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration (AEDGE), will also complement other planned searches for dark matter, and exploit synergies with other gravitational wave detectors. We give examples of the extended range of sensitivity to ultra-light dark matter offered by AEDGE, and how its gravitational-wave measurements could explore the assembly of super-massive black holes, first-order phase transitions in the early universe and cosmic strings. AEDGE will be based upon technologies now being developed for terrestrial experiments using cold atoms, and will benefit from the space experience obtained with, e.g., LISA and cold atom experiments in microgravity.     Electrochemical, vibrational, optical and Hirshfeld surface studies of 3D- bis[di(1,10-phenanthrolinium) (1,10-phenanthroline)] hexacyanoferrate ethanol trihydrate

    In this work, structure, spectroscopic, optical and electrochemical investigation of a new complex of the hexacyanoferrate [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and 1,10-phenanthroline have been examined. The complex has been resolved by single crystal X-ray diffraction at room temperature. In the crystal structure individual complex is interconnected through strong hydrogen bonds of type O-H...N, N-H...O and pi-pi interactions to obtain a 3D supramolecular shape. The three-dimensional Hirshfeld surface (3D-HS) investigation and the two-dimensional unique finger impression plots (2D-FP) reveal that the H... O, H... N and H... H contacts dominates the structure. The cyclic voltammetry explores the electrochemical performance of the complex. The complex reveals excellent supercapacitives properties with a higher specific capacitance equal to 1000 F.g(-1) for the scans rate 10 mVs(-1)

    Genetic identification of South African Artemia

    Detailed molecular data of Artemia (Crustacea, Anostraca) from South Africa are scarce. Here, we provide for the first time genetic data on the species status and phylogeography of Artemia from this region after an extensive sampling expedition. Our 16S rRNA RFLP analysis of 27 Artemia populations, including seven from South African sites, provides evidence for the presence of a mixed bisexual and parthenogenetic component in this area. Phylogenetic and network analyses reveal that three (out of seven) Artemia populations from South Africa belong to the invasive A. franciscana, two of them belong to A. salina while the last two contain both parthenogenetic and bisexual (A. salina) individuals. From a total of 18 haplotypes identified, seven were recorded from South Africa. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of A. franciscana in this region. Its invasiveness is reaffirmed by evidence for the complete replacement of the native A. salina population from Velddrif Saltworks. However, in other cases, parthenogens seem to modify the capacity of A. franciscana to replace natives. Results on the genetic identification of South African Artemia provide insights into the dynamics of invasion and co-occurrence and highlight effects on species interactions and on biodiversity in inland aquatic invertebrates
