Qatar-2: A K dwarf orbited by a transiting hot Jupiter and a more massive companion in an outer orbit
We report the discovery and initial characterization of Qatar-2b, a hot
Jupiter transiting a V = 13.3 mag K dwarf in a circular orbit with a short
period, P_ b = 1.34 days. The mass and radius of Qatar-2b are M_p = 2.49 M_j
and R_p = 1.14 R_j, respectively. Radial-velocity monitoring of Qatar-2 over a
span of 153 days revealed the presence of a second companion in an outer orbit.
The Systemic Console yielded plausible orbits for the outer companion, with
periods on the order of a year and a companion mass of at least several M_j.
Thus Qatar-2 joins the short but growing list of systems with a transiting hot
Jupiter and an outer companion with a much longer period. This system
architecture is in sharp contrast to that found by Kepler for multi-transiting
systems, which are dominated by objects smaller than Neptune, usually with
tightly spaced orbits that must be nearly coplanar
The fight for accretion: discovery of intermittent mass transfer in BB Doradus in the low state
Our long-term photometric monitoring of southern nova-like cataclysmic
variables with the 1.3-m SMARTS telescope found BB Doradus fading from V ~ 14.3
towards a deep low state at V ~ 19.3 in April 2008. Here we present
time-resolved optical spectroscopy of BB Dor in this faint state in 2009. The
optical spectrum in quiescence is a composite of a hot white dwarf with Teff =
30000 +- 5000 K and a M3-4 secondary star with narrow emission lines (mainly of
the Balmer series and HeI) superposed. We associate these narrow profiles with
an origin on the donor star. Analysis of the radial velocity curve of the
H-alpha emission from the donor star allowed the measurement of an orbital
period of 0.154095 +- 0.000003 d (3.69828 +- 0.00007 h), different from all
previous estimates. We detected episodic accretion events which veiled the
spectra of both stars and radically changed the line profiles within a
timescale of tens of minutes. This shows that accretion is not completely
quenched in the low state. During these accretion episodes the line wings are
stronger and their radial velocity curve is delayed by ~ 0.2 cycle, similar to
that observed in SW Sex and AM Her stars in the high state, with respect to the
motion of the white dwarf. Two scenarios are proposed to explain the extra
emission: impact of the material on the outer edge of a cold, remnant accretion
disc, or the combined action of a moderately magnetic white dwarf (B1 <~ 5 MG)

A slitless spectroscopic survey for quasars near quasars
We present the results of the Quasars near Quasars (QNQ) survey, a CCD-based
slitless spectroscopic survey for faint V<22 quasars at 1.7<z<3.6 on 18
26.2'x33.5' fields centred on bright quasars at 2.76<z<4.69. In total 169
quasar candidates with emission lines were selected from the extracted
flux-calibrated spectra on the basis of well-defined automatic selection
criteria followed by visual inspection and verification. With follow-up
spectroscopy of 81 candidates that were likely to reside at z>1.7 we were able
to confirm 80 new quasars at 0.580<z<3.586 on 16 of our fields. 64 of the newly
discovered quasars are located at z>1.7. The overall high success rate implies
that most of the remaining 88 candidates are quasars as well, although the
majority of them likely resides at z<1.7 on the basis of the observed line
shapes and strengths. Due to the insufficient depth of the input source
catalogues needed for extraction of the slitless spectra our survey is not well
defined in terms of limiting magnitude for faint 2.5<z<3.6 quasars whose Lyman
alpha emission is detectable well beyond V=22, albeit at a continuum S/N<1.
While not useful for characterising the evolving space density of quasars, our
sample provides many new closely spaced quasar sightlines around intensely
studied quasars for further investigations on the three-dimensional

Proceedings of the Third Annual Deep Brain Stimulation Think Tank: A Review of Emerging Issues and Technologies
The proceedings of the 3rd Annual Deep Brain Stimulation Think Tank summarize the most contemporary clinical, electrophysiological, imaging, and computational work on DBS for the treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease. Significant innovations of the past year are emphasized. The Think Tank\u27s contributors represent a unique multidisciplinary ensemble of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, engineers, and members of industry. Presentations and discussions covered a broad range of topics, including policy and advocacy considerations for the future of DBS, connectomic approaches to DBS targeting, developments in electrophysiology and related strides toward responsive DBS systems, and recent developments in sensor and device technologies
Rapid submarine melting of the calving faces of West Greenland glaciers
Widespread glacier acceleration has been observed in Greenland in the past few years associated with the thinning of the lower reaches of the glaciers as they terminate in the ocean. These glaciers thin both at the surface, from warm air temperatures, and along their submerged faces in contact with warm ocean waters. Little is known about the rates of submarine melting and how they may affect glacier dynamics. Here we present measurements of ocean currents, temperature and salinity near the calving fronts of the Eqip Sermia, Kangilerngata Sermia, Sermeq Kujatdleq and Sermeq Avangnardleq glaciers in central West Greenland, as well as ice-front bathymetry and geographical positions. We calculate water-mass and heat budgets that reveal summer submarine melt rates ranging from 0.7±0.2 to 3.9±0.8 m d -1. These rates of submarine melting are two orders of magnitude larger than surface melt rates, but comparable to rates of iceberg discharge. We conclude that ocean waters melt a considerable, but highly variable, fraction of the calving fronts of glaciers before they disintegrate into icebergs, and suggest that submarine melting must have a profound influence on grounding-line stability and ice-flow dynamics. © 2010 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Hot and Cool Forms of Inhibitory Control and Externalizing Behavior in Children of Mothers who Smoked during Pregnancy: An Exploratory Study
This study examined whether children exposed to prenatal smoking show deficits in “hot” and/or “cool” executive functioning (EF). Hot EF is involved in regulation of affect and motivation, whereas cool EF is involved in handling abstract, decontextualized problems. Forty 7 to 9-year-old children (15 exposed to prenatal smoking, 25 non-exposed) performed two computerized tasks. The Sustained Attention Dots (SA-Dots) Task (as a measure of “cool” inhibitory control) requires 400 non-dominant hand and 200 dominant hand responses. Inhibitory control of the prepotent response is required for dominant hand responses. The Delay Frustration Task (DeFT) (as a measure of “hot” inhibitory control) consists of 55 simple maths exercises. On a number of trials delays are introduced before the next question appears on the screen. The extent of response-button pressing during delays indicates frustration-induced inhibitory control. Prenatally exposed children showed poorer inhibitory control in the DeFT than non-exposed children. A dose–response relationship was also observed. In addition, prenatally exposed children had significantly higher (dose-dependent) conduct problem- and hyperactivity-inattention scores. There were no significant group differences in inhibitory control scores from the SA-Dots. These results indicate that children exposed to prenatal smoking are at higher risk of hot but not cool executive function deficits
Prognostic model to predict postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery based on a national prospective observational cohort study.
Background: Acute illness, existing co-morbidities and surgical stress response can all contribute to postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. The aim of this study was prospectively to develop a pragmatic prognostic model to stratify patients according to risk of developing AKI after major gastrointestinal surgery. Methods: This prospective multicentre cohort study included consecutive adults undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection, liver resection or stoma reversal in 2-week blocks over a continuous 3-month period. The primary outcome was the rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery. Bootstrap stability was used to select clinically plausible risk factors into the model. Internal model validation was carried out by bootstrap validation. Results: A total of 4544 patients were included across 173 centres in the UK and Ireland. The overall rate of AKI was 14·2 per cent (646 of 4544) and the 30-day mortality rate was 1·8 per cent (84 of 4544). Stage 1 AKI was significantly associated with 30-day mortality (unadjusted odds ratio 7·61, 95 per cent c.i. 4·49 to 12·90; P < 0·001), with increasing odds of death with each AKI stage. Six variables were selected for inclusion in the prognostic model: age, sex, ASA grade, preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate, planned open surgery and preoperative use of either an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker. Internal validation demonstrated good model discrimination (c-statistic 0·65). Discussion: Following major gastrointestinal surgery, AKI occurred in one in seven patients. This preoperative prognostic model identified patients at high risk of postoperative AKI. Validation in an independent data set is required to ensure generalizability
Can multiple lifestyle behaviours be improved in people with familial hypercholesterolemia? Results of a parallel randomised controlled trial
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of an individualised tailored lifestyle intervention on physical activity, dietary intake, smoking and compliance to statin therapy in people with Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH). Methods: Adults with FH (n = 340) were randomly assigned to a usual care control group or an intervention group. The intervention consisted of web-based tailored lifestyle advice and face-to-face counselling. Physical activity, fat, fruit and vegetable intake, smoking and compliance to statin therapy were self-reported at baseline and after 12 months. Regression analyses were conducted to examine between-group differences. Intervention reach, dose and fidelity were assessed. Results: In both groups, non-significant improvements in all lifestyle behaviours were found. Post-hoc analyses showed a significant decrease in saturated fat intake among women in the intervention group (β = -1.03; CI -1.98/-0.03). In the intervention group, 95% received a log on account, of which 49% logged on and completed one module. Nearly all participants received face-to-face counselling and on average, 4.2 telephone booster calls. Intervention fidelity was low. Conclusions: Individually tailored feedback is not superior to no intervention regarding changes in multiple lifestyle behaviours in people with FH. A higher received dose of computer-tailored interventions should be achieved by uplifting the website and reducing the burden of screening questionnaires.
