    Get PDF

Isolated internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) is an extremely rare presentation of stroke [1–3]. INO is defned by the presence of ipsilateral adduction paresis with contralateral dissociated nystagmus on horizontal gaze and is caused by strategic brainstem lesions involving the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) [2, 3].info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

MPC Approach for Synchronized Supply Chains of Perishable Goods

    Get PDF
Trabalho apresentado em 7th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Systems Management (IESM’17), 2017,Saarbrucken, GermanyThe movement of perishable goods is growing worldwide. Perishable goods need to be available to the market before the expiration date. With the decrease in inventory levels the components of a supply chain become even more integrated and dependent on coordinated decisions. Information regarding perishable goods must be visible throughout the supply chain for avoiding goods loss. A Model Predictive Control (MPC) heuristic to address operations management at supply chains of perishable goods is proposed in this paper. The approach is capable to follow the remaining time until expiration date which is critical to avoid losses. The supply chain is modeled using a state-space representation and operations management at the supply chain is formulated as an MPC Problem. In order to cope with operational decisions, the problem is solved on a periodic basis. The proposed approach is capable to deal with production decisions, monitor work-in-progress (WIP), and make transport assignments while monitoring the remaining time until the expiration date. Flows over the supply chain can be synchronized and therefore we named this type of supply chain a Synchronized Supply Chain (SSC). The approach is modular and easily scalable for largescale supply chains. Numerical results illustrate these statements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Ile-1781-Leu and Asp-2078-Gly Mutations in ACCase Gene, Endow Cross-resistance to APP, CHD, and PPZ in Phalaris minor from Mexico

Herbicides that inhibit acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) are commonly used in Mexico to control weedy grasses such as little seed canarygrass (Phalaris minor). These herbicides are classified into three major families (ariloxyphenoxypropionates (APP), cyclohexanodiones (CHD), and, recently, phenylpyrazolines (PPZ)). In this work, the resistance to ACCase (APP, CHD, and PPZ) inhibiting herbicides was studied in a biotype of Phalaris minor (P. minor) from Mexico, by carrying out bioassays at the whole-plant level and investigating the mechanism behind this resistance. Dose-response and ACCase in vitro activity assays showed cross-resistance to all ACCase herbicides used. There was no difference in the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of the 14C-diclofop-methyl between the R and S biotypes. The PCR generated CT domain fragments of ACCase from the R biotype and an S reference were sequenced and compared. The Ile-1781-Leu and Asp-2078-Gly point mutations were identified. These mutations could explain the loss of affinity for ACCase by the ACCase-inhibing herbicides. This is the first report showing that this substitution confers resistance to APP, CHD, and PPZ herbicides in P. minor from Mexico. The mutations have been described previously only in a few cases; however, this is the first study reporting on a pattern of cross-resistance with these mutations in P. minor. The findings could be useful for better management of resistant biotypes carrying similar mutations

The Application of leaf ultrasonic resonance to vitis vinifera L. suggests the existence of a diurnal osmotic adjustment subjected to photosynthesis

The main objective of this study was to apply the air-coupled broad-band ultrasonic spectroscopy in attached transpiring leaves of Vitis vinifera L. to monitor changes in leaf water potential (9) through the measurements of the standardized value of the resonant frequency associated with the maximum transmitance (f/fo). With this purpose, the response of grapevine to a drought stress period was investigated in terms of leaf water status, ultrasounds, gas exchange and sugar accumulation. Two strong correlations were obtained between f/fo and 9 measured at predawn (pd) and at midday (md) with different slopes. This fact implied the existence of two values of 9 for a given value of f/fo, which was taken as a sign that the ultrasonic technique was not directly related to the overall 9, but only to one of its components: the turgor pressure (P). The difference in 9 at constant f/fo (d) was found to be dependent on net CO2 assimilation (A) and might be used as a rough estimator of photosynthetic activity. It was then, the other main component of 9, osmotic potential (p), the one that may have lowered the values of md 9 with respect to pd 9 by the accumulation of sugars associated to net CO2 assimilation. This phenomenon suggests the existence of a diurnal osmotic adjustment in this species associated to sugars production in well-watered plants

Background: The Watchman FLX is a device upgrade of the Watchman 2.5 that incorporates several design enhancements intended to simplify left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and improve procedural outcomes. This study compares peri-procedural results of LAAO with Watchman FLX (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, Massachusetts) in centers with varying degrees of experience with the Watchman 2.5 and Watchman FLX. Methods: Prospective, multicenter, 'real-world' registry including consecutive patients undergoing LAAO with the Watchman FLX at 26 Spanish sites (FLX-SPA registry). Implanting centers were classified according to the center's prior experience with the Watchman 2.5. A further division of centers according to whether or not they had performed ≤ 10 or > 10Watchman FLX implants was prespecified at the beginning of the study. Procedural outcomes of institutions stratified according to their experience with the Watchman 2.5 and FLX devices were compared. Results: 359 patients [mean age 75.5 (SD8.1), CHA2DS2-VASc 4.4 (SD1.4), HAS-BLED 3.8(SD0.9)] were included. Global success rate was 98.6%, successful LAAO with the first selected device size was achieved in 95.5% patients and the device was implanted at first attempt in 78.6% cases. There were only 9(2.5%) major peri-procedural complications. No differences in efficacy or safety results according to the centeŕs previous experience with Watchman 2.5 and procedural volume with Watchman FLX existed. Conclusions: The Watchman FLX attains high procedural success rates with complete LAA sealing in unselected, real-world patients, along with a low incidence of peri-procedural complications, regardless of operatoŕs experience with its previous device iteration or the number of Watchman FLX devices implanted
