    Actividad acaricida de extractos etanólicos de tres genotipos de Leucaena spp. sobre Rhipicephalus microplus en condiciones in vitro

    The tick Rhipicephalus microplus is known to develop resistance against some commercial acaracides, driving a search for natural alternatives. An evaluation was done of the acaricide activity against adult and larval R. microplus of ethanol extracts from three Leucaena spp. genotypes: L. leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Native); L. leucocephala (Cunningham); and L. Leucocephala x L. padilla (KX2). Larval immersion and adult immersion tests were used to evaluate acaricide activity. Secondary metabolite profiles of the three genotypes were generated using analytical chromatographic plates. Against the larvae, the 50% extract concentration exhibited 91.68% mortality for the Cunningham genotype, 82.00% for the KX2 and 54.06% for the Native. The Native genotype extract was most effective against adults with a 50% mortality at a 20% concentration. Flavonoids and terpenes were identified in all three genotypes and are probably responsible for their acaricide activity. The Leucaena spp. Cunningham and KX2 extracts were effective against R. microplus larvae, but further research is needed to identify the metabolites that provide this acaricide activity, be it individually or synergistically.El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la actividad acaricida de extractos etanólicos de tres genotipos de Leucaena spp: L. leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Nativa), L. leucocephala (Cunningham) y L. Leucocephala x L. padilla (KX2), sobre larvas y garrapatas adultas de Rhipicephalus microplus. Para evaluar la actividad acaricida se usaron las pruebas de inmersión de larvas e inmersión de adultas. Asimismo, en los extractos de los tres genotipos de Leucaena spp. se analizó el perfil de metabolitos secundarios mediante placas analíticas de cromatografía. Los extractos a concentración del 50 % mostraron una mortalidad en larvas de 91.68, 82.00 y 54.06 % para los genotipos Cunningham, KX2 y Nativa, respectivamente. El genotipo Nativa presentó el mejor comportamiento para el control de R. microplus adultas con un 50 % de mortalidad a la concentración de 20 %. En los extractos se identificaron flavonoides y terpenos que pudieran ser los responsables de la actividad acaricida de los tres genotipos de Leucaena; sin embargo, se requiere de más estudios para identificar los metabolitos que tengan una acción individual o en sinergia en el control de R. microplus

    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Síntesis por coprecipitación de ferrita Ni₀.₆Zn₀.₄Fe₂O₄ determinación de su temperatura de Curie

    Se sintetizó una ferrita de Níquel y Zinc, con estequiometría Ni₀.₆Zn₀.₄Fe₂O₄ por el método de coprecipitación. Esta ferrita es del tipo Espinela cúbica A²⁺B³⁺O₄. La celda unitaria contiene 8 unidades AB₂O₄ con un total de 64 átomos. Para la caracterización estructural de la ferrita sintetizada se realizaron estudios por Difracción de Rayos – X de polvos. Con el refinamiento de la estructura por el método de Rietveld, fue posible determinar los datos cristalográficos de la ferrita obtenida. Parámetro a = 8.382 Å; ángulos: α, β, γ= 90°; M = 237.73 g/mol; V = 589.05 cm³; Dx = 5.361 g/cm³. G. El = Fd3m (227); tamaño promedio del cristal = 290 Å y la Microdeformación = 9.54 %. El color de la ferrita fue naranja de hierro. Para la determinación de la temperatura de Curie (Tc), se realizaron estudios de Análisis Térmico Gravimétrico (TGA), Análisis Térmico Diferencial (DTA), Calorimetría Diferencial de Barrido (DSC). La Temperatura de Curie, (Tc) de la ferrita Ni₀.₆Zn₀.₄Fe₂O₄ fue de 480 K.A ferrite of nickel and zinc was synthesized with stoichiometry Ni₀.₆Zn₀.₄Fe₂O₄ by the coprecipitation method. This is the cubic spinel ferrite type A²⁺B³⁺O₄. The unit cell contains 8 units AB₂O₄ a total of 64 atoms. For structural characterization of the synthesized ferrite, X ray diffraction studies were performed. With the refinement of the structure by the Rietveld method, it was possible to determine the crystallographic data of the obtained ferrite. Parameter a = 8.382 Å; angles: α, β, γ= 90 °; M = 237.73 g / mol; V = 589.05 cm³; Dx = 5.361 g / cm³. S. G. Fd3m = (227); average crystal size = 290 Å and microdeformations = 9.54%. The color was orange iron ferrite. For the determination of the Curie temperature (Tc), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis studies (TGA), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and were performed. The Curie temperature (Tc) of the ferrite Ni₀.₆Zn₀.₄Fe₂O₄ was 480 K

    "Visiones de la educación financiera: análisis y perspectivas es una obra que enmarca la importancia de la educación financiera en la sociedad en el contexto actual. Las decisiones que en este tema realiza un individuo pueden impactar positiva o negativamente su estabilidad económica por un periodo indeterminado, es aquí cuando la educación financiera actúa como una herramienta trascendental en su bienestar personal. Además de tener la función de armadura ante las batallas que se libran en los mercados —como la crisis financiera de 2008— funge como dinamizador de las economías al potenciar los proyectos de inversión con el aumento del emprendedurismo, impactando así en las variables macroeconómicas. Esta área del conocimiento ha adquirido importancia y popularidad a nivel internacional a raíz de las crisis económicas de los últimos años, sin embargo, aún existen, entre otras, brechas sociodemográficas, culturales, económicas, que no permiten el acceso a estas enseñanzas, excluyendo parte de la población del proceso del bienestar económico.
