Ratio of the Isolated Photon Cross Sections at \sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV
The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been
measured in \pbarp collisions at GeV with the \D0 detector at
the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy ()
range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity . This measurement is
combined with to previous \D0 result at GeV to form a ratio
of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading order QCD with the
measured cross section at 630 GeV and ratio of cross sections show satisfactory
agreement in most of the range.Comment: 7 pages. Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 251805, (2001
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
NMDA Receptors on Non-Dopaminergic Neurons in the VTA Support Cocaine Sensitization
The initiation of behavioral sensitization to cocaine and other psychomotor stimulants is thought to reflect N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-mediated synaptic plasticity in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) circuitry. The importance of drug induced NMDAR mediated adaptations in ventral tegmental area (VTA) DA neurons, and its association with drug seeking behaviors, has recently been evaluated in Cre-loxp mice lacking functional NMDARs in DA neurons expressing Cre recombinase under the control of the endogenous dopamine transporter gene (NR1(DATCre) mice).Using an additional NR1(DATCre) mouse transgenic model, we demonstrate that while the selective inactivation of NMDARs in DA neurons eliminates the induction of molecular changes leading to synaptic strengthening, behavioral measures such as cocaine induced locomotor sensitization and conditioned place preference remain intact in NR1(DATCre) mice. Since VTA DA neurons projecting to the prefrontal cortex and amygdala express little or no detectable levels of the dopamine transporter, it has been speculated that NMDA receptors in DA neurons projecting to these brain areas may have been spared in NR1(DATCre) mice. Here we demonstrate that the NMDA receptor gene is ablated in the majority of VTA DA neurons, including those exhibiting undetectable DAT expression levels in our NR1(DATCre) transgenic model, and that application of an NMDAR antagonist within the VTA of NR1(DATCre) animals still blocks sensitization to cocaine. These results eliminate the possibility of NMDAR mediated neuroplasticity in the different DA neuronal subpopulations in our NR1(DATCre) mouse model and therefore suggest that NMDARs on non-DA neurons within the VTA must play a major role in cocaine-related addictive behavior
Proposing Ties in a Dense Hypergraph of Academics
Nearly all personal relationships exhibit a multiplexity where people relate to one another in many different ways. Using a set of faculty CVs from multiple research institutions, we mined a hypergraph of researchers connected by co-occurring named entities (people, places and organizations). This results in an edge-sparse, link-dense structure with weighted connections that accurately encodes faculty department structure. We introduce a novel model that generates dyadic proposals of how well two nodes should be connected based on both the mass and distributional similarity of links through shared neighbors. Similar link prediction tasks have been primarily explored in unipartite settings, but for hypergraphs where hyper-edges out-number nodes 25-to-1, accounting for link similarity is crucial. Our model is tested by using its proposals to recover link strengths from four systematically lesioned versions of the graph. The model is also compared to other link prediction methods in a static setting. Our results show the model is able to recover a majority of link mass in various settings and that it out-performs other link prediction methods. Overall, the results support the descriptive fidelity of our text-mined, named entity hypergraph of multi-faceted relationships and underscore the importance of link similarity in analyzing link-dense multiplexitous relationships
The Transcriptional Repressor TupA in Aspergillus niger Is Involved in Controlling Gene Expression Related to Cell Wall Biosynthesis, Development, and Nitrogen Source Availability.
The Tup1-Cyc8 (Ssn6) complex is a well characterized and conserved general transcriptional repressor complex in eukaryotic cells. Here, we report the identification of the Tup1 (TupA) homolog in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger in a genetic screen for mutants with a constitutive expression of the agsA gene. The agsA gene encodes a putative alpha-glucan synthase, which is induced in response to cell wall stress in A. niger. Apart from the constitutive expression of agsA, the selected mutant was also found to produce an unknown pigment at high temperatures. Complementation analysis with a genomic library showed that the tupA gene could complement the phenotypes of the mutant. Screening of a collection of 240 mutants with constitutive expression of agsA identified sixteen additional pigment-secreting mutants, which were all mutated in the tupA gene. The phenotypes of the tupA mutants were very similar to the phenotypes of a tupA deletion strain. Further analysis of the tupA-17 mutant and the DeltatupA mutant revealed that TupA is also required for normal growth and morphogenesis. The production of the pigment at 37 degrees C is nitrogen source-dependent and repressed by ammonium. Genome-wide expression analysis of the tupA mutant during exponential growth revealed derepression of a large group of diverse genes, including genes related to development and cell wall biosynthesis, and also protease-encoding genes that are normally repressed by ammonium. Comparison of the transcriptome of up-regulated genes in the tupA mutant showed limited overlap with the transcriptome of caspofungin-induced cell wall stress-related genes, suggesting that TupA is not a general suppressor of cell wall stress-induced genes. We propose that TupA is an important repressor of genes related to development and nitrogen metabolism
Quasi-model-independent search for new high physics at D0
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We systematically analyze many exclusive final states and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale. No evidence of new high p_T physics is observed
Search for single top quark production at D0 using neural networks
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in ~90 pb^-1 of data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using arrays of neural networks to separate signals from backgrounds, we set upper limits on the cross sections of 17 pb for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X, and 22 pb for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X, both at the 95% confidence level
Cross Section for b Jet Production in pbar-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
Bottom quark production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV is studied
with 5 inverse picobarns of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b
jets in the central rapidity region (|y(b)| < 1) as a function of jet
transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within
experimental and theoretical uncertainties, DO results are found to be higher
than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Differential cross section for W boson production as a function of transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.8 TeV
We report a measurement of the differential cross section for W boson
production as a function of its transverse momentum in proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994-1995 and correspond to an
integrated luminosity of 85 pb^{-1}. The results are in good agreement with
quantum chromodynamics over the entire range of transverse momentum.Comment: Accepted by Physics Letters
Measurement of the ratio of differential cross sections for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV
We report on a measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections
for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in
proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. This measurement uses data
recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1995. It
represents the first investigation of a proposal that ratios between W and Z
observables can be calculated reliably using perturbative QCD, even when the
individual observables are not. Using the ratio of differential cross sections
reduces both experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and can therefore
provide smaller overall uncertainties in the measured mass and width of the W
boson than current methods used at hadron colliders.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Physics Letters
