The Upper Limit for CH4 in the Protostellar Disk toward HL Tauri
We used high-resolution infrared spectra of the heavily embedded T Tauri star HL Tau to search for evidence of absorption due to the R0, R1, and R2 gas-phase CH4 Îœ3 lines near 3.3 ÎŒm. From this, we report a 3 Ï upper limit of 1.3 Ă 1015 cm-2 for the CH4 gas column density toward HL Tau. Our results are compared to those found for CO gas toward this source and to the recent model for chemistry in the inner (10 AU) disks around T Tauri stars by Markwick et al. We find that the upper limit of methane ice+gas column density toward HL Tau, when compared to CO, is somewhat lower than but consistent with that measured toward other interstellar sources (~1%) but that it is much lower than that predicted in the Markwick et al. model and much less than the CH4/CO ratio (10%-80%) found in cometary volatiles. This has important implications for the processing of interstellar material and its incorporation into planetary bodies
Early Results from APOKASC
Asteroseismology and spectroscopy provide complementary constraints on the
fundamental and chemical properties of stars. I describe the first results from
APOKASC, a collaboration between the Kepler asteroseismic science consortium
(KASC) and the SDSS-III APOGEE survey. These include (1) the first test of
asteroseismic scaling relationships in the metal-poor regime using halo and
thick disk stars identified in the APOKASC sample; and (2) the calibration of
spectroscopic parameters using precise asteroseismic measurements of surface
gravity. I also highlight future research avenues that are made possible by

Revisiting the transits of CoRoT-7b at a lower activity level
CoRoT-7b, the first super-Earth with measured radius discovered, has opened
the new field of rocky exoplanets characterisation. To better understand this
interesting system, new observations were taken with the CoRoT satellite.
During this run 90 new transits were obtained in the imagette mode. These were
analysed together with the previous 151 transits obtained in the discovery run
and HARPS radial velocity observations to derive accurate system parameters. A
difference is found in the posterior probability distribution of the transit
parameters between the previous CoRoT run (LRa01) and the new run (LRa06). We
propose this is due to an extra noise component in the previous CoRoT run
suspected to be transit spot occultation events. These lead to the mean transit
shape becoming V-shaped. We show that the extra noise component is dominant at
low stellar flux levels and reject these transits in the final analysis. We
obtained a planetary radius, , in agreement
with previous estimates. Combining the planetary radius with the new mass
estimates results in a planetary density of
which is consistent with a rocky composition. The CoRoT-7 system remains an
excellent test bed for the effects of activity in the derivation of planetary

The ATLAS SCT grounding and shielding concept and implementation
This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. These will be detailed in a forthcoming paper
Relationship between the Velocity Ellipsoids of Galactic-Disk Stars and their Ages and Metallicities
The dependences of the velocity ellipsoids of F-G stars of the thin disk of
the Galaxy on their ages and metallicities are analyzed based on the new
version of the Geneva-Copenhagen Catalog. The age dependences of the major,
middle, and minor axes of the ellipsoids, and also of the dispersion of the
total residual veltocity, obey power laws with indices 0.25,0.29,0.32, and 0.27
(with uncertainties \pm 0.02). Due to the presence of thick-disk objects, the
analogous indices for all nearby stars are about a factor of 1.5 larger.
Attempts to explain such values are usually based on modeling relaxation
processes in the Galactic disk. With increasing age, the velocity ellipsoid
increases in size and becomes appreciably more spherical, turns toward the
direction of the Galactic center, and loses angular momentum. The shape of the
velocity ellipsoid remains far from equilibrium. With increasing metallicity,
the velocity ellipsoid for stars of mixed age increases in size, displays a
weak tendency to become more spherical, and turns toward the direction of the
Galactic center (with these changes occurring substantially more rapidly in the
transition through the metallicity [Fe/H]= -0.25). Thus, the ellipsoid changes
similarly to the way it does with age; however, with decreasing metallicity,
the rotational velocity about the Galactic center monotonically increases,
rather than decreases(!). Moreover, the power-law indices for the age
dependences of the axes depend on the metallicity, and display a maximum near
[Fe/H]=-0.1. The age dependences of all the velocity-ellipsoid parameters for
stars with equal metallicity are roughly the same. It is proposed that the
appearance of a metallicity dependence of the velocity ellipsoids for thin-disk

Foraging ecology of Mediterranean juvenile loggerhead turtles: insights from C and N stable isotope ratios
Bycatch is one of the key threats to juvenile marine turtles in the Mediterranean Sea. As fishing methods are regional or habitat specific, the susceptibility of marine turtles may differ according to inter- and intra-population variations in foraging ecology. An understanding of these variations is necessary to assess bycatch susceptibility and to implement region-specific management. To determine if foraging ecology differs with region, sex, and size of juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen was performed on 171 juveniles from a range of foraging regions across the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea. Isotope ratios differed with geographical region, likely due to baseline variations in ÎŽ13C and ÎŽ15N values. The absence of sex-specific differences suggests that within an area, all comparably sized animals likely exploit similar foraging strategies, and therefore, their susceptibility to fisheries threats will likely be similar. The isotope ratios of juveniles occupying the North East Adriatic and North Levantine basin increased with size, potentially due to increased consumption of more prey items at higher trophic levels from a more neritic source. Isotope ratios of juveniles with access to both neritic and oceanic habitats did not differ with size which is consistent with them consuming prey items from both habitats interchangeably. With foraging habitats exploited differently among size classes in a population, the susceptibility to fisheries interactions will likely differ with size; therefore, region-specific management approaches will be needed
Spectroscopic survey of the Galaxy with Gaia I. Design and performance of the Radial Velocity Spectrometer
The definition and optimisation studies for the Gaia satellite spectrograph,
the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS), converged in late 2002 with the
adoption of the instrument baseline. This paper reviews the characteristics of
the selected configuration and presents its expected performance. The RVS is a
2.0 by 1.6 degree integral field spectrograph, dispersing the light of all
sources entering its field of view with a resolving power R=11 500 over the
wavelength range [848, 874] nm. The RVS will continuously and repeatedly scan
the sky during the 5 years of the Gaia mission. On average, each source will be
observed 102 times over this period. The RVS will collect the spectra of about
100-150 million stars up to magnitude V~17-18. At the end of the mission, the
RVS will provide radial velocities with precisions of ~2 km/s at V=15 and
\~15-20 km/s at V=17, for a solar metallicity G5 dwarf. The RVS will also
provide rotational velocities, with precisions (at the end of the mission) for
late type stars of sigma_vsini ~5 km/s at V~15 as well as atmospheric
parameters up to V~14-15. The individual abundances of elements such as Silicon
and Magnesium, vital for the understanding of Galactic evolution, will be
obtained up to V~12-13. Finally, the presence of the 862.0 nm Diffuse
Interstellar Band (DIB) in the RVS wavelength range will make it possible to

A double-sided, shield-less stave prototype for the ATLAS upgrade strip tracker for the high luminosity LHC
A detailed description of the integration structures for the barrel region of the silicon strips tracker of the ATLAS Phase-II upgrade for the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, the so-called High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), is presented. This paper focuses on one of the latest demonstrator prototypes recently assembled, with numerous unique features. It consists of a shortened, shield-less, and double sided stave, with two candidate power distributions implemented. Thermal and electrical performances of the prototype are presented, as well as a description of the assembly procedures and tools
