Trying again to fail-first
For constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), Haralick and Elliott [1] introduced the Fail-First Principle and defined in it terms of minimizing branch depth. By devising a range of variable ordering heuristics, each in turn trying harder to fail first, Smith and Grant [2] showed that adherence to this strategy does not guarantee reduction in search effort. The present work builds on Smith and Grant. It benefits from the development of a new framework for characterizing heuristic performance that defines two policies, one concerned with enhancing the likelihood of correctly extending a partial solution, the other with minimizing the effort to prove insolubility. The Fail-First Principle can be restated as calling for adherence to the second, fail-first policy, while discounting the other, promise policy. Our work corrects some deficiencies in the work of Smith and Grant, and goes on to confirm their finding that the Fail-First Principle, as originally defined, is insufficient. We then show that adherence to the fail-first policy must be measured in terms of size of insoluble subtrees, not branch depth. We also show that for soluble problems, both policies must be considered in evaluating heuristic performance. Hence, even in its proper form the Fail-First Principle is insufficient. We also show that the “FF” series of heuristics devised by Smith and Grant is a powerful tool for evaluating heuristic performance, including the subtle relations between heuristic features and adherence to a policy
Clusters in weighted macroeconomic networks : the EU case. Introducing the overlapping index of GDP/capita fluctuation correlations
GDP/capita correlations are investigated in various time windows (TW), for
the time interval 1990-2005. The target group of countries is the set of 25 EU
members, 15 till 2004 plus the 10 countries which joined EU later on. The
TW-means of the statistical correlation coefficients are taken as the weights
(links) of a fully connected network having the countries as nodes. Thereafter
we define and introduce the overlapping index of weighted network nodes. A
cluster structure of EU countries is derived from the statistically relevant
eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix. This may be considered to
yield some information about the structure, stability and evolution of the EU

The Use of Statistical Quality Control Charts to Evaluate Changes in Individual Performance
An employee's readiness to perform (RTP) has become an important issue facing today's industries. Some industries have turned to cognitive performance testing to provide answers regarding their employee's abilities to work safely and effectively. Such tests are designed to assess the employee's current state of preparedness for work without identifying specific causes for any noted performance impairment. This paper evaluates performance-based RTP tests with regard to the metrics by which performance change is judged. In addition to evaluating a current commonly used metric, several statistical quality control charts were examined as alternate methods for identifying impaired performance. Traditional Shewhart charts were used as well as exponentially weighted moving average charts and cumulative sum charts. A comparative analysis of the various methods revealed that control chart techniques provided superior effectiveness over the current method. Specifically, exponentially weighted moving average charts were effective in evaluating continuous performance measures and Shewhart p charts were effective in evaluating discrete measure data.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

The health-related quality of life in a Swedish sample of HIV-infected persons
The purposes of the present study are (1) to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the subjective health status in a sample of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons (2) to relate the results to different population groups and (3) to investigate the relationship of medical and demographic variables with HRQOL. A total of 72 HIV-infected men were included. They answered the Swedish health-related quality of life questionnaire and the health index. Demographic and medical data were obtained from the medical records. The data collection took place before entering a therapeutic HIV vaccine trial. The results showed a more negative impact on the HRQOL and subjective health status in the HIV-positive subjects, compared with male population groups. The dimensions of emotional well-being were most affected. When comparisons were made according to the medical and demographic variables for different subgroups within the HIV sample, differences in the physical-dimension scales were most prominent. Symptomatic HIV infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), anti-retroviral treatment, sick leave or disability pension, low income and basic education were associated with worse HRQOL and health status. In conclusion, it is of utmost importance to take into account, aspects of the patients' emotional well-being in nursing, as well as in medical care and interventions. Moreover, individualized caring programs are needed because the disruptions in HRQOL fluctuated within the HIV sample
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically
decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states:
tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These
final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs
boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The
observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at
the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of
115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let

using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in

Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W'
decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider at a
center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity
of about 1 inverse femtobarn. Lacking any significant excess in the data in
comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on the production cross
section times branching fraction, and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can
be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to
fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits, and is the

Search for a scalar or vector particle decaying into Zgamma in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for a narrow scalar or vector resonance decaying into
Zgamma with a subsequent Z decay into a pair of electrons or muons. The data
for this search were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
ppbar collider at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.1 (1.0)
fb-1 of data, we observe 49 (50) candidate events in the electron (muon)
channel, in good agreement with the standard model prediction. From the
combination of both channels, we derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross
section times branching fraction (sigma x B) into Zgamma. These limits range
from 0.19 (0.20) pb for a scalar (vector) resonance mass of 600 GeV/c^2 to 2.5
(3.1) pb for a mass of 140 GeV/c^2.Comment: Published by Phys. Lett.
Measurement of the Isolated Photon Cross Section in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
The cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons has been
measured in p anti-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span transverse momenta 23 to 300 GeV
and have pseudorapidity |eta|<0.9. The cross section is compared with the
results from two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The
