    The application of the global isomorphism to the study of liquid-vapor equilibrium in two and three dimensional Lenard-Jones fluids

    We analyze the interrelation between the coexistence curve of the Lennard-Jones fluid and the Ising model in two and three dimensions within the global isomorphism approach proposed earlier [V. L. Kulinskii, J. Phys. Chem. B \textbf{114} 2852 (2010)]. In case of two dimensions we use the exact Onsager result to construct the binodal of the corresponding Lennard-Jones fluid and compare it with the results of the simulations. In the three dimensional case we use available numerical results for the Ising model for the corresponding mapping. The possibility to observe the singularity of the binodal diameter is discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    Consequences of temperature and temperature variability on swimming activity, group structure, and predation of endangered delta smelt

    The effects of water temperature on individual and group movement behaviour in prey fish can affect ecological interactions such as competition and predation, but how variability in temperature influence fish behaviour is less understood. Of particular concern is how increased warming in tidally fluctuating estuaries may impact the native and endangered delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus, Osmeridae). To help address this issue, we tested the effects of increased water temperature (fluctuating [17–21°C] and warm [21°C] acclimated treatments) on juvenile delta smelt individual and group behaviour, response to chemical alarm and predator cues, as well as capacity to evade predation. In addition, predation of delta smelt was tested in the presence of a dominant invasive competitor, Mississippi silversides (Menidia beryllina, Atherinopsidae), as well as comparative predation mortality on Mississippi silversides when isolated. After 7 days of increased temperature treatments, delta smelt in the warm treatment increased swimming velocity, decreased turning angle, and altered group structure with larger inter-individual distances compared to fish in the control (17°C) and fluctuating temperature treatments. Following conspecific and predator chemical alarm cues, delta smelt showed anti-predator responses. Control and fluctuating treatment fish responded to conspecific cues with increased swimming speeds, decreased inter-individual distances and near-neighbour distances, and, after 15 min, fish recovered back to baseline behaviours. In contrast, fish in the warm treatment had not recovered after 15 min, and swimming speeds were maintained at roughly 25 cm/s, close to maximum capabilities. Fish in control and fluctuating treatments showed minimal responses to predator cues, whereas delta smelt exposed to warm conditions significantly increased swimming speeds and decreased turning angle. Predation of delta smelt by largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, Centrarchidae) was greatest under the warm treatment, correlating with altered behaviours of delta smelt; however, predation of Mississippi silversides was greater than delta smelt, independent of temperature. This study provides novel insight into the group behaviour of delta smelt, their response to predation, and how prolonged exposure to elevated temperature may induce negative individual and group behaviours causing alterations in predator–prey dynamics.     We analyze the phase diagram of a model of hard spheres of chemical radius one, which is defined over a generalized Bethe lattice containing short loops.     Towards on-farm pig face recognition using convolutional neural networks

Identification of individual livestock such as pigs and cows has become a pressing issue in recent years as intensification practices continue to be adopted and precise objective measurements are required (e.g. weight). Current best practice involves the use of RFID tags which are time-consuming for the farmer and distressing for the animal to fit. To overcome this, non-invasive biometrics are proposed by using the face of the animal. We test this in a farm environment, on 10 individual pigs using three techniques adopted from the human face recognition literature: Fisherfaces, the VGG-Face pre-trained face convolutional neural network (CNN) model and our own CNN model that we train using an artificially augmented data set. Our results show that accurate individual pig recognition is possible with accuracy rates of 96.7% on 1553 images.     Analysis of Time to Treatment and Survival Among Adults Younger Than 50 Years of Age With Colorectal Cancer in Canada

    Importance: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is uncommon in adults younger than 50 years of age, so this population may experience delays to treatment that contribute to advanced stage and poor survival. Objective: To investigate whether there is an association between time from presentation to treatment and survival in younger adults with CRC. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective cohort study used linked population-based data in Ontario, Canada. Participants included patients with CRC aged younger than 50 years who were diagnosed in Ontario between 2007 and 2018. Analysis was performed between December 2019 and December 2022. Exposure: Administrative and billing codes were used to identify the number of days between the date of first presentation and treatment initiation (overall interval). Main Outcomes and Measures: The associations between increasing overall interval, overall survival (OS), and cause-specific survival (CSS) were explored with restricted cubic spline regression. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were also fit for OS and CSS, adjusted for confounders. Analyses were repeated in a subset of patients with lower urgency, defined as those who did not present emergently, did not have metastatic disease, did not have cross-sectional imaging or endoscopy within 14 days of first presentation, and had an overall interval of at least 28 days duration. Results: Among 5026 patients included, the median (IQR) age was 44.0 years (40.0-47.0 years); 2412 (48.0%) were female; 1266 (25.2%) had metastatic disease and 1570 (31.2%) had rectal cancer. The lower-urgency subset consisted of 2548 patients. The median (IQR) overall interval was 108 days (55-214 days) (15.4 weeks [7.9-30.6 weeks]). Patients with metastatic CRC had shorter median (IQR) overall intervals (83 days [39-183 days]) compared with those with less advanced disease. Five-year overall survival was 69.8% (95% CI, 68.4%-71.1%). Spline regression showed younger patients with shorter overall intervals (&lt;108 days) had worse OS and CSS with no significant adverse outcomes of longer overall intervals. In adjusted Cox models, overall intervals longer than 18 weeks were not associated with significantly worse OS or CSS compared with those waiting 12 to 18 weeks (OS: HR, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.67-1.03]; CSS: HR, 0.90 [95% CI, 0.69-1.18]). Results were similar in the subset of lower-urgency patients, and when stratified by stage. Conclusions and relevance: In this cohort study of 5026 patients with CRC aged younger than 50 years of age in Ontario, time from presentation to treatment was not associated with advanced disease or poor survival. These results suggest that targeting postpresentation intervals may not translate to improved outcomes on a population level.</p

    The effect of cognitive load on faking interrogative suggestibility on the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale

    In the light of recent studies into the impact of cognitive load on detecting deception, the impact of cognitive load on faking on the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale (GSS) was investigated. Eighty undergraduate students participated in the study, and were randomly assigned to one of four conditions resulting from a combination of the factors: instruction type (genuine or instructed faking, see Hansen, Smeets, & Jelicic, 2009) and concurrent task (yes or no). Findings show that instructed fakers, not performing a concurrent task, score significantly higher on yield 1 in comparison to genuine interviewees. This is in line with previous studies into faking on the GSS. However, instructed fakers, performing a concurrent task, achieved significantly lower yield 1 scores than instructed fakers not performing a concurrent task. Genuine (non fakers) showed a different response to increased cognitive load during the dual-task paradigm. This study suggests that increasing cognitive load may potentially indicate (and preclude) faking attempts on the yield dimension of the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale

    5-ht inhibition of rat insulin 2 promoter cre recombinase transgene and proopiomelanocortin neuron excitability in the mouse arcuate nucleus

    A number of anti-obesity agents have been developed that enhance hypothalamic 5-HT transmission. Various studies have demonstrated that arcuate neurons, which express proopiomelanocortin peptides (POMC neurons), and neuropeptide Y with agouti-related protein (NPY/AgRP) neurons, are components of the hypothalamic circuits responsible for energy homeostasis. An additional arcuate neuron population, rat insulin 2 promoter Cre recombinase transgene (RIPCre) neurons, has recently been implicated in hypothalamic melanocortin circuits involved in energy balance. It is currently unclear how 5-HT modifies neuron excitability in these local arcuate neuronal circuits. We show that 5-HT alters the excitability of the majority of mouse arcuate RIPCre neurons, by either hyperpolarization and inhibition or depolarization and excitation. RIPCre neurons sensitive to 5-HT, predominantly exhibit hyperpolarization and pharmacological studies indicate that inhibition of neuronal firing is likely to be through 5-HT1F receptors increasing current through a voltage-dependent potassium conductance. Indeed, 5-HT1F receptor immunoreactivity co-localizes with RIPCre green fluorescent protein expression. A minority population of POMC neurons also respond to 5-HT by hyperpolarization, and this appears to be mediated by the same receptor-channel mechanism. As neither POMC nor RIPCre neuronal populations display a common electrical response to 5-HT, this may indicate that sub-divisions of POMC and RIPCre neurons exist, perhaps serving different outputs
