Anisotropic magnetoresistance in a 2DEG in a quasi-random magnetic field
We present magnetotransport results for a 2D electron gas (2DEG) subject to
the quasi-random magnetic field produced by randomly positioned sub-micron Co
dots deposited onto the surface of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. We observe
strong local and non-local anisotropic magnetoresistance for external magnetic
fields in the plane of the 2DEG. Monte-Carlo calculations confirm that this is
due to the changing topology of the quasi-random magnetic field in which
electrons are guided predominantly along contours of zero magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Responses in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to increasing dietary doses of lupinine, the main quinolizidine alkaloid found in yellow lupins (Lupinus luteus)
This experiment investigated the effect of increasing dietary doses of lupinine, the main quinolizidine alkaloid in Lupinus luteus, on feed intake, growth performance, tissue histology and nutritional composition of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Duplicate groups of rainbow trout (initial body weight of 330g) were fed extruded fish meal based diets containing 0, 50, 75, 100, 250, 500, 1000 and 5000mg lupininekg-1 for 60days. Feed intake and growth were reduced in response to dietary lupinine, best fit by quadratic regression. Based on these results, the practical tolerance level of lupinine, with regard to growth and feed intake, was â€100mgkg-1 feed. Carcass composition did not vary among treatments. Despite a depletion of glycogen and lipid stores in the hepatocytes, lupinine did not induce any morphological changes in spleen, kidney, heart or intestinal tissues.These results indicate that the lupinine possesses a strong anti-palatability effect, but does not appear to pose short-term health risks for rainbow trout. © 2011 Elsevier B.V
Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
A multi-center study on the attitudes of Malaysian emergency health care staff towards allowing family presence during resuscitation of adult patients
BACKGROUND
The practice of allowing family members to witness on-going active resuscitation has been gaining ground in many developed countries since it was first introduced in the early 1990s. In many Asian countries, the acceptability of this practice has not been well studied.
AIM
We conducted a multi-center questionnaire study to determine the attitudes of health care professionals in Malaysia towards family presence to witness ongoing medical procedures during resuscitation.
METHODS
Using a bilingual questionnaire (in Malay and English language), we asked our respondents about their attitudes towards allowing family presence (FP) as well as their actual experience of requests from families to be allowed to witness resuscitations. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the many variables and a positive attitude towards FP.
RESULTS
Out of 300 health care professionals who received forms, 270 responded (a 90% response rate). Generally only 15.8% of our respondents agreed to allow relatives to witness resuscitations, although more than twice the number (38.5%) agreed that relatives do have a right to be around during resuscitation. Health care providers are significantly more likely to allow FP if the procedures are perceived as likely to be successful (e.g., intravenous cannulation and blood taking as compared to chest tube insertion). Doctors were more than twice as likely as paramedics to agree to FP (p-value = 0.002). This is probably due to the Malaysian work culture in our health care systems in which paramedics usually adopt a 'follow-the-leader' attitude in their daily practice.
CONCLUSION
The concept of allowing FP is not well accepted among our Malaysian health care providers
Constraints on anomalous QGC's in interactions from 183 to 209 GeV
The acoplanar photon pairs produced in the reaction e(+) e(-) - â vvyy are analysed in the 700 pb(-1) of data collected by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 and 209 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model predictions is seen in any of the distributions examined. The resulting 95% C.L. limits set on anomalous QGCs, a(0)(Z), a(c)(Z), a(0)(W) and a(c)(W), are -0.012 lt a(0)(Z)/Lambda(2) lt +0.019 GeV-2, -0.041 lt a(c)(Z)/Lambda(2) lt +0.044 GeV-2, -0.060 lt a(0)(W)/Lambda(2) lt +0.055 GeV-2, -0.099 lt a(c)(W)/Lambda(2) lt +0.093 GeV-2, where Lambda is the energy scale of the new physics responsible for the anomalous couplings

Climate change is a worldwide threat to biodiversity and ecosystem structure, functioning, and services. To understand the underlying drivers and mechanisms, and to predict the consequences for nature and people, we urgently need better understanding of the direction and magnitude of climateâchange impacts across the soilâplantâatmosphere continuum. An increasing number of climateâchange studies is creating new opportunities for meaningful and highâquality generalisations and improved process understanding. However, significant challenges exist related to data availability and/or compatibility across studies, compromising opportunities for data reâuse, synthesis, and upscaling. Many of these challenges relate to a lack of an established âbest practiceâ for measuring key impacts and responses. This restrains our current understanding of complex processes and mechanisms in terrestrial ecosystems related to climate change
