    Stability and Validity of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank in the Prediction of Success in Veterinary Medicine Curriculum

    That indices of mental ability alone do not predict scholastic achievement adequately is a well-known fact. It would seem a reasonable hypothesis, then, that non-intellective influences, notably motivation or interest, are operative. This being the case, consideration of a measure of interest along with the more customary employment of some measure of academic aptitude could be hoped to enhance prediction of scholastic success. Further, selection only on the basis of ability to complete the curriculum is a short-sighted goal for administrators, especially in professional curricula such as Veterinary Medicine. They might well be equally concerned about choosing those students who will be compatible with the requirements of veterinary medicine upon graduation and subsequent entry into actual practice. A high degree of interest in veterinary medicine is probably necessary for satisfaction and stability in the vocation. Thus the utilization of a measure of interest would be an aid in vocational counseling even though it may prove to be statistically unrelated to scholastic success. Investigation of the stability of interests is also of importance to the fields of student selection and counseling, for if interests tend to undergo major changes with training and/or the passage of time, selection or counseling based upon such measures can have little or no validity

    An Empirical Study of Scoring Methods for the Conover Driving Attitude Inventory

    The measurement of driving attitudes has followed in the wake of various studies and statistical data indicating that improper attitudes are responsible for an unduly high percentage of accidents. Certain of these tests have limitations, one of which is an economical method of scoring. Conover (Conover, 1947) used a scoring method such that the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, are assigned respectively to the responses designated as; most displeasing, displeasing, indifferent, pleasing, and most pleasing, for the positive items, and to avoid negative scores the values 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, are assigned respectively to the same responses; most displeasing, displeasing, indifferent, pleasing, and very pleasing, on the negative items. Summing the positive items according to the values given and the negative items by the reverse scoring system, the score for an individual is obtained. The Conover Driving Attitude Inventory is designed to measure the attitudes of individuals toward factors shown to be important in safe driving. An individual\u27s attitude toward specific factors, as indicated by his response to the items of the scale may be considered to constitute his attitude toward safe driving in general. In other words it is a test of one\u27s reactions to everyday driving experiences while behind the wheel. One-hundred fifty items make up the scale, thirty-five of which are considered positive items, thirty negative, and the remaining eighty-five are considered as fillers

    The human suffering caused by the political ideology of apartheid in South Africa during the Apartheid era (1948-1994) prompted worldwide condemnation and a variety of diplomatic and legal responses. Amongst these responses was the attempt to have apartheid recognised both as a crime against humanity in the 1973 Apartheid Convention as well as a war crime in Article 85(4)(c) of Additional Protocol I. This article examines the origins, nature and current status of the practices of apartheid as a war crime and its possible application to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

    Identification of rare de novo epigenetic variations in congenital disorders

    Certain human traits such as neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) and congenital anomalies (CAs) are believed to be primarily genetic in origin. However, even after whole-genome sequencing (WGS), a substantial fraction of such disorders remain unexplained. We hypothesize that some cases of ND-CA are caused by aberrant DNA methylation leading to dysregulated genome function. Comparing DNA methylation profiles from 489 individuals with ND-CAs against 1534 controls, we identify epivariations as a frequent occurrence in the human genome. De novo epivariations are significantly enriched in cases, while RNAseq analysis shows that epivariations often have an impact on gene expression comparable to loss-of-function mutations. Additionally, we detect and replicate an enrichment of rare sequence mutations overlapping CTCF binding sites close to epivariations, providing a rationale for interpreting non-coding variation. We propose that epivariations contribute to the pathogenesis of some patients with unexplained ND-CAs, and as such likely have diagnostic relevance.The authors are grateful to the patients and families who participated in this study and to the collaborators who supported patient recruitment.     Epigenetic age acceleration in adolescence associates with BMI, inflammation and risk score for middle age cardiovascular disease

    BACKGROUND: 'Accelerated ageing', assessed by adult DNA methylation predicts cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adolescent accelerated aging might predict CVD earlier. We investigated whether epigenetic age acceleration (assessed age 17-years) associated with adiposity/CVD-risk measured (ages 17, 20, 22-years), and projected CVD by middle-age. METHODS: DNA methylation measured in peripheral blood provided 2 estimates of epigenetic age acceleration; intrinsic (IEAA, (preserved across cell types) and extrinsic (EEAA, dependent on cell admixture and methylation levels within each cell type).Adiposity was assessed by anthropometry, ultrasound and DEXA (ages 17, 20, 22 years). CVD-risk factors (lipids, HOMA-IR, blood pressure, inflammatory markers) were assessed at age 17-years. CVD development by age 47 years was calculated by Framingham algorithms. Results are presented as regression coefficients/5-year epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA/EEAA) for adiposity, CVD-risk factors and CVD development. RESULTS: In 995 participants (49.6% female, age 17.3+/-0.6 years), EEAA (/5-years) was associated with increased BMI of 2.4% (95%CI 1.2-3.6%) and 2.4% (0.8-3.9%) at 17 and 22 years, respectively. EEAA was associated with increases of 23% (3-33%) in hsCRP, 10% (4-17%) in interferon-gamma induced protein (IP-10) and 4% (2-6%) in tumour necrosis factor receptor 2 (sTNFR2), adjusted for BMI and HOMA-IR. EEAA(/5-years) results in a 4% increase in hard endpoints of CVD by 47 years old and a 3% increase, after adjustment for conventional risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Accelerated epigenetic age in adolescence was associated with inflammation, BMI measured 5 years later, and probability of middle-age CVD. Irrespective whether this is cause or effect, assessing epigenetic age might refine disease prediction

    Zinc-Chelation Contributes to the Anti-Angiogenic Effect of Ellagic Acid on Inhibiting MMP-2 Activity, Cell Migration and Tube Formation

    Ellagic acid (EA), a dietary polyphenolic compound, has been demonstrated to exert anti-angiogenic effect but the detailed mechanism is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the zinc chelating activity of EA contributed to its anti-angiogenic effect.The matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) activity, a zinc-required reaction, was directly inhibited by EA as examined by gelatin zymography, which was reversed dose-dependently by adding zinc chloride. In addition, EA was demonstrated to inhibit the secretion of MMP-2 from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as analyzed by Western blot method, which was also reversed by the addition of zinc chloride. Reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with Kazal motifs (RECK), known to down-regulate the MMP-2 activity, was induced by EA at both the mRNA and protein levels which was correlated well with the inhibition of MMP-2 activity. Interestingly, zinc chloride could also abolish the increase of EA-induced RECK expression. The anti-angiogenic effect of EA was further confirmed to inhibit matrix-induced tube formation of endothelial cells. The migration of endothelial cells as analyzed by transwell filter assay was suppressed markedly by EA dose-dependently as well. Zinc chloride could reverse these two effects of EA also in a dose-dependent manner. Since magnesium chloride or calcium chloride could not reverse the inhibitory effect of EA, zinc was found to be involved in tube formation and migration of vascular endothelial cells.Together these results demonstrated that the zinc chelation of EA is involved in its anti-angiogenic effects by inhibiting MMP-2 activity, tube formation and cell migration of vascular endothelial cells. The role of zinc was confirmed to be important in the process of angiogenesis

    The Influence of International Law on the International Movement of Persons

    Many migration theories identify ‘the law’ as a significant constraint on the international movement of persons. While this constraint often operates through national migration legislation, this study examines the influence of international law in shaping contemporary patterns in the international movement of persons at the macro level. The analysis begins with an examination of the long-established power of a State to regulate cross-border movement of persons as an inherent attribute of State sovereignty, together with the accepted limitations on a State’s power to control entry and exit. Yet, international law reaches well beyond the movement of people across borders. The development of international human rights law has been a key constraint on state action in the United Nations era by also regulating the treatment of migrants within a State’s borders. The study considers how international law has responded to current migration issues, including: protection of migrant women and children; suppression of smuggling and trafficking of people; labour migration; and environmental migration. As in other areas of international society, there has been a proliferation of institutions through which international migration law is made and enforced. The most prominent among them are the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), but the establishment of other entities with overlapping mandates has given rise to calls for a new international migration regime based on streamlined institutional arrangements. The study concludes that international law is an imperfect framework for regulating the international movement of persons because it has developed in a piecemeal fashion over a long time to deal with issues of concern at particular points in human history. Yet, despite its shortfalls, international law and its associated institutions unquestionably play a most important role in constraining and channeling state authority over the international movement of persons

    DNA methylation levels in candidate genes associated with chronological age in mammals are not conserved in a long-lived seabird

Most seabirds do not have any outward identifiers of their chronological age, so estimation of seabird population age structure generally requires expensive, long-term banding studies. We investigated the potential to use a molecular age biomarker to estimate age in short-tailed shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostris). We quantified DNA methylation in several A. tenuirostris genes that have shown age-related methylation changes in mammals. In birds ranging from chicks to 21 years of age, bisulphite treated blood and feather DNA was sequenced and methylation levels analysed in 67 CpG sites in 13 target gene regions. From blood samples, five of the top relationships with age were identified in KCNC3 loci (CpG66: R2 = 0.325, p = 0.019). In feather samples ELOVL2 (CpG42: R2 = 0.285, p = 0.00048) and EDARADD (CpG46: R2 = 0.168, p = 0.0067) were also weakly correlated with age. However, the majority of markers had no clear association with age (of 131 comparisons only 12 had a p-value < 0.05) and statistical analysis using a penalised lasso approach did not produce an accurate ageing model. Our data indicate that some age-related signatures identified in orthologous mammalian genes are not conserved in the long-lived short tailed shearwater. Alternative molecular approaches will be required to identify a reliable biomarker of chronological age in these seabirds
