A Study of Language Identity and Shift: The Calvinist Dutch of West Michigan
From the perspective of the sociology of language developed by Joshua Fishman, and working from letters, newspapers, secondary accounts, and grave inscriptions, this study describes and explains bilingualism and the loss of the Dutch language in two West Michigan Dutch immigrant communities from 1847-1930, the Reformed Church (RCA) Dutch and the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) Dutch. The loss of Dutch in some ways parallels the contemporaneous language shift of Norwegian immigrants (Haugen, 1969) and Swedish immigrants (Karstadt, 2002). The two West Michigan Dutch Calvinist communities were unique in their language shift experiences. The RCA Dutch experienced and promoted a rapid assimilation and shift to English. The CRC Dutch promoted a multi-generational maintenance of the Dutch language in a stable Dutch- English bilingual setting-the preservation of Dutch was not at the expense of the acquisition of English-and then consciously and abruptly abandoned the Dutch language in the years immediately after World War I. The CRC Dutch maintained their language for so long precisely because it was the marker of identity for them and it was inextricably tied to their faith; the RCA Dutch were able to abandon the Dutch language early on because it was not the marker of religious identity for them

This summary and assessment of the Humanities at Large project at the University of Rhode Island in fulfillment of the Next Generation PhD Planning Grant describes our exploration of the diversification of Humanities PhD education through cross-disciplinary and experiential learning. Our work focused on ways we could tap our institution’s resources, make connections across and beyond campus, and reimagine Humanities graduate programming at URI
Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications: Creating a More Inclusive Future
For many years, the academic and research library workforce has worked to accelerate the transition to more open and equitable systems of scholarship. While significant progress has been made, barriers remain. The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) seeks to stimulate further advances through this action- oriented research agenda, which is designed to provide practical, actionable information for academic librarians; include the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities in order to expand the profession’s understanding of research environments and scholarly communication systems; and point librarians and other scholars toward important research questions to investigate. This report represents a yearlong process of reviewing the scholarly and practice-based literature to take into account established investigation coupled with extensive public consultation to identify the major problems facing the academic library community. Through interviews, focus groups, workshops, and an online survey, over 1,000 members of the ACRL community offered their thoughts and expertise to shape this research agenda. Incorporating guidance and input from ACRL’s Research and Scholarly Environment Committee and an advisory panel, this document recommends ways to make the scholarly communications and research environment more open, inclusive, and equitable
Intellectual Property and Public Health – A White Paper
On October 26, 2012, the University of Akron School of Law’s Center for Intellectual Property and Technology hosted its Sixth Annual IP Scholars Forum. In attendance were thirteen legal scholars with expertise and an interest in IP and public health who met to discuss problems and potential solutions at the intersection of these fields. This report summarizes this discussion by describing the problems raised, areas of agreement and disagreement between the participants, suggestions and solutions made by participants and the subsequent evaluations of these suggestions and solutions. Led by the moderator, participants at the Forum focused generally on three broad questions. First, are there alternatives to either the patent system or specific patent doctrines that can provide or help provide sufficient incentives for health-related innovation? Second, is health information being used proprietarily and if so, is this type of protection appropriate? Third, does IP conflict with other non-IP values that are important in health and how does or can IP law help resolve these conflicts? This report addresses each of these questions in turn
SDSS J094604.90+183541.8: A Gravitationally Lensed Quasar at z=4.8
We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed quasar identified
serendipitously in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The object, SDSS
J094604.90+183541.8, was initially targeted for spectroscopy as a luminous red
galaxy, but the SDSS spectrum has the features of both a z=0.388 galaxy and a
z=4.8 quasar. We have obtained additional imaging that resolves the system into
two quasar images separated by 3.06 arcsec and a bright galaxy that is strongly
blended with one of the quasar images. We confirm spectroscopically that the
two quasar images represent a single lensed source at z=4.8 with a total
magnification of 3.2, and we derive a model for the lensing galaxy. This is the
highest redshift lensed quasar currently known. We examine the issues
surrounding the selection of such an unusual object from existing data and

Fuzzy species limits in Mediterranean gorgonians (Cnidaria, Octocorallia): inferences on speciation processes
The study of the interplay between speciation and hybridization is of primary importance in evolutionary biology. Octocorals are ecologically important species whose shallow phylogenetic relationships often remain to be studied. In the Mediterranean Sea, three congeneric octocorals can be observed in sympatry: Eunicella verrucosa, Eunicella cavolini and Eunicella singularis. They display morphological differences and E.singularis hosts photosynthetic Symbiodinium, contrary to the two other species. Two nuclear sequence markers were used to study speciation and gene flow between these species, through network analysis and Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC). Shared sequences indicated the possibility of hybridization or incomplete lineage sorting. According to ABC, a scenario of gene flow through secondary contact was the best model to explain these results. At the intraspecific level, neither geographical nor ecological isolation corresponded to distinct genetic lineages in E.cavolini. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Technical Overview
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project (SDSS-RM) is a
dedicated multi-object RM experiment that has spectroscopically monitored a
sample of 849 broad-line quasars in a single 7 deg field with the SDSS-III
BOSS spectrograph. The RM quasar sample is flux-limited to i_psf=21.7 mag, and
covers a redshift range of 0.1<z<4.5. Optical spectroscopy was performed during
2014 Jan-Jul dark/grey time, with an average cadence of ~4 days, totaling more
than 30 epochs. Supporting photometric monitoring in the g and i bands was
conducted at multiple facilities including the CFHT and the Steward Observatory
Bok telescopes in 2014, with a cadence of ~2 days and covering all lunar
phases. The RM field (RA, DEC=14:14:49.00, +53:05:00.0) lies within the CFHT-LS
W3 field, and coincides with the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) Medium Deep Field MD07,
with three prior years of multi-band PS1 light curves. The SDSS-RM 6-month
baseline program aims to detect time lags between the quasar continuum and
broad line region (BLR) variability on timescales of up to several months (in
the observed frame) for ~10% of the sample, and to anchor the time baseline for
continued monitoring in the future to detect lags on longer timescales and at
higher redshift. SDSS-RM is the first major program to systematically explore
the potential of RM for broad-line quasars at z>0.3, and will investigate the
prospects of RM with all major broad lines covered in optical spectroscopy.
SDSS-RM will provide guidance on future multi-object RM campaigns on larger
scales, and is aiming to deliver more than tens of BLR lag detections for a
homogeneous sample of quasars. We describe the motivation, design and
implementation of this program, and outline the science impact expected from

Results of the UK NEQAS for Molecular Genetics reference sample analysis
Aims: In addition to providing external quality assessment (EQA) schemes, United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment service (UK NEQAS) for Molecular Genetics also supports the education of laboratories. As an enhancement to the Molecular Pathology EQA scheme, a human cell-line reference sample, manufactured by Thermo Fisher Scientific (AcroMetrix), was provided for analysis. This contained many variants, present at frequencies between 1% and 17.9%.
Methods: One hundred and one laboratories submitted results, with a total of 2889 test results on 53 genes being reported. Known polymorphisms, 46/2889 (1.59%) results, were excluded. Variants detected in the seven most commonly reported (and clinically relevant) genes, KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, EGFR, PIK3CA, KIT and PDGFRA, are reported here, as these genes fall within the scope of UK NEQAS EQA schemes.
Results: Next generation sequencing (NGS) was the most commonly performed testing platform. There were between 5 and 27 validated variants in the seven genes reported here. Eight laboratories correctly reported all five NRAS variants, and two correctly reported all eight BRAF variants. The validated mean variant frequency was lower than that determined by participating laboratories, with single-gene testing methodologies showing less variation in estimated frequencies than NGS platforms. Laboratories were more likely to correctly identify clinically relevant variants.
Conclusions: Over 100 laboratories took the opportunity to test the ‘educational reference sample’, showing a willingness to further validate their testing platforms. While it was encouraging to see that the most widely reported variants were those which should be included in routine testing panels, reporting of variants was potentially open to interpretation, thus clarity is still required on whether laboratories selectively reported variants, by either clinical relevance or variant frequency
