ABSTRACT Sumatera Island is a paradise of biodiversity, but it is being threatened by pressure human activity in forest conversion, clearing of land for plantations, encroachment and poaching. Recently, the natural forests in Sumatera are under pressure affecting in ecosystem conditions and biodiversity in it. That same situation is also occured in other major island, namely Papua, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sumatera, and Java. This research was conducted by Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. Remote Sensing Technology is used for indentifiying landcover and landscape based on genesis. While GIS technology is used to assess the suitability of Sumatran tiger habitat and to determine a potential areas for development of habitat corridors to maintain connectivity between two forest blocks which separated by road in that area. The research location is Forest Preserve Batabuh Hill. The results have confirmed that the area is suitable for consideration as tiger habitat, but it has function for habitat corridors only and not regarded as a core habitat, because this area be able to accomodate fewer than two tigers. However, considering the location of strategic area as relationship between two protected areas that Rimbang Baling and Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, it has very important to be protected. Degradation of habitat suitability was occured of 2002 - 2013 with indication of reduction in natural forest areas that directly impact on ecosystem condition in the area. The existence of separate forest blocks Batabuh Hill in roads is giving contributed on high pressure environmental damage. The potential area to establish habitat corridors is located in area with covered of relatively dense vegetation. Natural forests in along road is separating Forest Hill Batabuh already lost, but the rubber trees in that area can be used as vegetation area because canopy structure similar a tree in natural forests. The location which near in bridge is also into consideration because could be potential for animals to pass

Developing ecosystem service indicators: experiences and lessons learned from sub-global assessments and other initiatives
People depend upon ecosystems to supply a range of services necessary for their survival and well-being. Ecosystem service indicators are critical for knowing whether or not these essential services are being maintained and used in a sustainable manner, thus enabling policy makers to identify the policies and other interventions needed to better manage them. As a result, ecosystem service indicators are of increasing interest and importance to governmental and inter-governmental processes, including amongst others the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Aichi Targets contained within its strategic plan for 2011-2020, as well as the emerging Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Despite this growing demand, assessing ecosystem service status and trends and developing robust indicators is o!en hindered by a lack of information and data, resulting in few available indicators. In response, the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), together with a wide range of international partners and supported by the Swedish International Biodiversity Programme (SwedBio)*, undertook a project to take stock of the key lessons that have been learnt in developing and using ecosystem service indicators in a range of assessment contexts. The project examined the methodologies, metrics and data sources employed in delivering ecosystem service indicators, so as to inform future indicator development. This report presents the principal results of this project
IDENTIFICATION OF CONSERVATION PRIORITY LOCATION IN INDONESIA BASED ON LAND-SEA CONNECTIVITY
The environment quality around those rivers and canals will affect the health of the coastal ecosystem and biota living in it. Empirically, there is an ecological connection between ecosystem in coastal areas and between coastal areas to the mainland and the high seas. Therefore, marine spatial planning should consider any change on landscape upstream. The aim of this study was to define new locations which have high conservation value based on connectivity between terrestrial and marine. The method used in this study was spatial analysis using systematic conservation planning approach with Marxan as the decision support tool. Marxan works based on scenarios developed by spatial planner. This study was using two primary scenarios: first, consider the existing protected areas; second did not consider the existing protected areas (PAs) to identify the gaps between new priority locations and the existing PAs. The data used in this study were basic spatial data, ecological data, and biodiversity data from various sources. The study area were all islands of Indonesia, devided into seven clusters. Based on those two scenarios, the result of the study shows that there are 108 locations in Indonesia which identified as areas which have high conservation value and also hold potential land-sea connection at once, inside and outside existing protected areas. Based on this study, if in the future the stakeholder have plans to do intervention in those areas primary in conservation field, those identified locations could be considered as new areas.
