Magnetic coupling in highly-ordered NiO/Fe3O4(110): Ultrasharp magnetic interfaces vs. long-range magnetoelastic interactions
We present a laterally resolved X-ray magnetic dichroism study of the
magnetic proximity effect in a highly ordered oxide system, i.e. NiO films on
Fe3O4(110). We found that the magnetic interface shows an ultrasharp
electronic, magnetic and structural transition from the ferrimagnet to the
antiferromagnet. The monolayer which forms the interface reconstructs to
NiFe2O4 and exhibits an enhanced Fe and Ni orbital moment, possibly caused by
bonding anisotropy or electronic interaction between Fe and Ni cations. The
absence of spin-flop coupling for this crystallographic orientation can be
explained by a structurally uncompensated interface and additional
magnetoelastic effects
Element-Specific Depth Profile of Magnetism and Stoichiometry at the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/BiFeO3 Interface
Depth-sensitive magnetic, structural and chemical characterization is
important in the understanding and optimization of novel physical phenomena
emerging at interfaces of transition metal oxide heterostructures. In a
simultaneous approach we have used polarized neutron and resonant X-ray
reflectometry to determine the magnetic profile across atomically sharp
interfaces of ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 / multiferroic BiFeO3 bi-layers
with sub-nanometer resolution. In particular, the X-ray resonant magnetic
reflectivity measurements at the Fe and Mn resonance edges allowed us to
determine the element specific depth profile of the ferromagnetic moments in
both the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and BiFeO3 layers. Our measurements indicate a
magnetically diluted interface layer within the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer, in
contrast to previous observations on inversely deposited layers. Additional
resonant X-ray reflection measurements indicate a region of an altered Mn- and
O-content at the interface, with a thickness matching that of the magnetic
diluted layer, as origin of the reduction of the magnetic moment.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material include
Complex-Orbital Order in Fe_3O_4 and Mechanism of the Verwey Transition
Electronic state and the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe_3O_4) are studied
using a spinless three-band Hubbard model for 3d electrons on the B sites with
the Hartree-Fock approximation and the exact diagonalisation method.
Complex-orbital, e.g., 1/sqrt(2)[|zx> + i |yz>], ordered (COO) states having
noncollinear orbital moments ~ 0.4 mu_B on the B sites are obtained with the
cubic lattice structure of the high-temperature phase. The COO state is a novel
form of magnetic ordering within the orbital degree of freedom. It arises from
the formation of Hund's second rule states of spinless pseudo-d molecular
orbitals in the Fe_4 tetrahedral units of the B sites and ferromagnetic
alignment of their fictitious orbital moments. A COO state with longer
periodicity is obtained with pseudo-orthorhombic Pmca and Pmc2_1 structures for
the low-temperature phase. The state spontaneously lowers the crystal symmetry
to the monoclinic and explains experimentally observed rhombohedral cell
deformation and Jahn-Teller like distortion. From these findings, we consider
that at the Verwey transition temperature, the COO state remaining to be
short-range order impeded by dynamical lattice distortion in high temperature
is developed into that with long-range order coupled with the monoclinic

Implementing health research through academic and clinical partnerships : a realistic evaluation of the Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC)
Background: The English National Health Service has made a major investment in nine partnerships between
higher education institutions and local health services called Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health
Research and Care (CLAHRC). They have been funded to increase capacity and capability to produce and
implement research through sustained interactions between academics and health services. CLAHRCs provide a
natural ‘test bed’ for exploring questions about research implementation within a partnership model of delivery.
This protocol describes an externally funded evaluation that focuses on implementation mechanisms and
processes within three CLAHRCs. It seeks to uncover what works, for whom, how, and in what circumstances.
Design and methods: This study is a longitudinal three-phase, multi-method realistic evaluation, which
deliberately aims to explore the boundaries around knowledge use in context. The evaluation funder wishes to see
it conducted for the process of learning, not for judging performance. The study is underpinned by a conceptual
framework that combines the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services and Knowledge to
Action frameworks to reflect the complexities of implementation. Three participating CLARHCS will provide indepth
comparative case studies of research implementation using multiple data collection methods including
interviews, observation, documents, and publicly available data to test and refine hypotheses over four rounds of
data collection. We will test the wider applicability of emerging findings with a wider community using an
interpretative forum.
Discussion: The idea that collaboration between academics and services might lead to more applicable health
research that is actually used in practice is theoretically and intuitively appealing; however the evidence for it is
limited. Our evaluation is designed to capture the processes and impacts of collaborative approaches for
implementing research, and therefore should contribute to the evidence base about an increasingly popular (e.g.,
Mode two, integrated knowledge transfer, interactive research), but poorly understood approach to knowledge
translation. Additionally we hope to develop approaches for evaluating implementation processes and impacts
particularly with respect to integrated stakeholder involvement

A systematic review of frameworks for the interrelationships of mental health evidence and policy in low- and middle-income countries
Background: The interrelationships between research evidence and policy-making are complex. Different theoretical frameworks exist to explain general evidence–policy interactions. One largely unexplored element of these interrelationships is how evidence interrelates with, and influences, policy/political agenda-setting. This review aims to identify the elements and processes of theories, frameworks and models on interrelationships of research evidence and health policy-making, with a focus on actionability and agenda-setting in the context of mental health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Methods: A systematic review of theories was conducted based on the BeHeMOTh search method, using a tested and refined search strategy. Nine electronic databases and other relevant sources were searched for peer-reviewed and grey literature. Two reviewers screened the abstracts, reviewed full-text articles, extracted data and performed quality assessments. Analysis was based on a thematic analysis. The included papers had to present an actionable theoretical framework/model on evidence and policy interrelationships, such as knowledge translation or evidence-based policy, specifically target the agenda-setting process, focus on mental health, be from LMICs and published in English.
Results: From 236 publications included in the full text analysis, no studies fully complied with our inclusion criteria. Widening the focus by leaving out ‘agenda-setting’, we included ten studies, four of which had unique conceptual frameworks focusing on mental health and LMICs but not agenda-setting. The four analysed frameworks confirmed research gaps from LMICs and mental health, and a lack of focus on agenda-setting. Frameworks and models from other health and policy areas provide interesting conceptual approaches and lessons with regards to agenda-setting.
Conclusion: Our systematic review identified frameworks on evidence and policy interrelations that differ in their elements and processes. No framework fulfilled all inclusion criteria. Four actionable frameworks are applicable to mental health and LMICs, but none specifically target agenda-setting. We have identified agenda-setting as a research theory gap in the context of mental health knowledge translation in LMICs. Frameworks from other health/policy areas could offer lessons on agenda-setting and new approaches for creating policy impact for mental health and to tackle the translational gap in LMICs

Potential role of p53 on metallothionein induction in human epithelial breast cancer cells
The expression and induction of metallothionein has been associated with protection against oxidative stress and apoptosis. This study examines the effect of tumour suppressor protein p53 on metallothionein expression following CdCl2 treatment in eight human epithelial breast cancer cell lines differing in p53 and oestrogen-receptor status. Cells were treated with 10 μM CdCl2 for 24 h and metallothionein protein levels were measured by cadmium binding assay. MCF7 cells which are p53-positive (p53+) and oestrogen-receptor-positive showed a large induction in metallothionein synthesis by 10.79±1.36-fold. Other breast cancer cell lines which are p53-negative (p53−) and oestrogen-receptor-negative or weakly oestrogen-receptor-positive showed a small induction ranging from 1.40±0.10 to 3.65±0.30-fold. RT–PCR analysis showed an induction of metallothionein mRNA in MCF7 cells by about 1.61±0.08-fold, while in HCC1806 cells (p53−, oestrogen-receptor-negative) by 1.11±0.13-fold, and in MDA-MB-231 (p53−, oestrogen-receptor-negative) by 1.25±0.06-fold. Metallothionein localisation was determined by immunohistochemical staining. Prior to metal treatment, metallothionein was localised mainly in the cytoplasm of MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. After treatment with 10 μM CdCl2 for 24 h, MCF7 cells showed intense nuclear and cytoplasmic staining for metallothionein, while MDA-MB-231 cells showed staining in the cytoplasm with weak nuclear staining. Apoptosis induced by 10–40 μM CdCl2 at time points between 4 and 48 h was examined with TUNEL assay. In MCF7 cells, apoptosis increased with higher concentrations of CdCl2, it peaked at 6–8 h and appeared again at 48 h for all concentrations of CdCl2 tested. In MDA-MB-231 cells, apoptosis remained at low levels for 10–40 μM CdCl2 at all time points. Studies on cadmium uptake showed similar uptake and accumulation of cadmium at 8 and 24 h in all the cell lines. The data demonstrate that treatment of epithelial breast cancer cells with 10 μM CdCl2 for 24 h caused a greater induction of metallothionein protein and mRNA expression in p53+ and oestrogen-receptor-positive cells as compared to p53− and oestrogen-receptor-negative or weakly oestrogen-receptor-positive cells. This effect may be associated with the occurrence of apoptosis and suggests a role for p53 and oestrogen-receptor on the expression and induction of metallothionein in epithelial cells
