Place et rôle du riz pluvial dans les systèmes de production du lac Alaotra Les systèmes SCV (semis direct sur couverture végétale permanente) : une alternative viable pour une agriculture pluviale durable
La région de l'Alaotra repose sur un plateau situé à 750 mètres d'altitude avec au cœur de la plaine le lac Alaotra. La surface cultivée en riziculture est estimée à 148 500 ha en 2000 (FAO/UPDR, 2000), dont 75-80 000 ha dans la cuvette du Lac et plus de 65-70 000 ha au sud et dans les zones en périphérie, qui constitue 10% de la surface rizicole nationale pour seulement 4% des riziculteurs malgaches. Cette région réalise 33% de la valeur ajoutée de l'ensemble de la filière nationale et 15% de la richesse générée par le secteur riz. Le climat irrégulier constitue une contrainte majeure pour tous les agriculteurs du lac Alaotra. Les relations agriculture-élevage sont au cœur de la problématique de développement et d'évolution des exploitations agricoles.Ainsi, avec la saturation des rizières irrigables ou à Mauvaise Maîtrise de l'Eau (RMME), la colonisation agricole des tanety anciennement dévolus aux pâturages extensifs depuis les années 1980 s'est accélérer, induisant la perturbation des activités d'élevage bovin traditionnel extensif à objectif de capitalisation qui évoluent aujourd'hui vers un élevage productif (embouche et production laitière) ou de trait. Le diagnostic réalisé en 2007 a mis en évidence 7 types d'exploitations agricoles différents. Les différents systèmes de riziculture pluviale se retrouvent sur les plateaux sommitaux et les pentes des collines (en rotation jachère culture sur les sols très pauvres), les bas de pente et les baiboho, en rotation avec d'autres cultures pluviales (maïs, manioc, pois de terre...) avec ou sans jachère, ou en système SCV depuis leur introduction au début des années 2000. L'introduction de variétés composites poly-aptitudes de type Sebota a pu lever une contrainte majeure des zones ni totalement irriguées ni totalement pluviales mais intermédiaires dans les RMME (riziculture pluviale partiellement irriguée, selon l'accès à l'eau et les caractéristiques climatiques de la saison), Les systèmes SCV mis au point sur baiboho avec des successions culturales de type riz de saison / haricot de contre saison - maïs de saison ou riz de saison puis vesce de contre saison associée ou non à des cultures maraîchères montrent également un niveau de production et de sécurité par rapport aux aléas climatiques très proche voire supérieurs à ceux obtenus en riziculture irriguée. La part du riz pluvial dans la formation du revenu et la sécurité alimentaire a été analysée pour chaque type d'exploitation et varie de 20 à 30 % du revenu riz total (avant autoconsommation), et se révèle croissante en fonction du rapport tanety / rizière dans l'exploitation. Water in Comet 2/2003 K4 (LINEAR) with Spitzer
We present sensitive 5.5 to 7.6 micron spectra of comet C/2003 K4 (LINEAR)
obtained on 16 July 2004 (r_{h} = 1.760 AU, Delta_{Spitzer} = 1.409 AU, phase
angle 35.4 degrees) with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The nu_{2} vibrational
band of water is detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio (> 50). Model
fitting to the best spectrum yields a water ortho-to-para ratio of 2.47 +/-
0.27, which corresponds to a spin temperature of 28.5^{+6.5}_{-3.5} K. Spectra
acquired at different offset positions show that the rotational temperature
decreases with increasing distance from the nucleus, which is consistent with
evolution from thermal to fluorescence equilibrium. The inferred water
production rate is (2.43 +/- 0.25) \times 10^{29} molec. s^{-1}. The spectra do
not show any evidence for emission from PAHs and carbonate minerals, in
contrast to results reported for comets 9P/Tempel 1 and C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp).
However, residual emission is observed near 7.3 micron the origin of which

Electrostatic model of atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys
We present a simple ionic model which successfully reproduces the various
types of compositional long-range order observed in a large class of complex
insulating perovskite alloys. The model assumes that the driving mechanism
responsible for the ordering is simply the electrostatic interaction between
the different ionic species. A possible new explanation for the anomalous
long-range order observed in some Pb relaxor alloys, involving the proposed
existence of a small amount of Pb^4+ on the B sublattice, is suggested by an

Employment and insurance outcomes and factors associated with employment among long-term thyroid cancer survivors:a population-based study from the PROFILES registry

172452.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: To obtain insight into employment and insurance outcomes of thyroid cancer survivors and to examine the association between not having employment and other factors including quality of life. METHODS: In this cross-sectional population-based study, long-term thyroid cancer survivors from the Netherlands participated. Clinical data were collected from the cancer registry. Information on employment, insurance, socio-demographic characteristics, long-term side effects, and quality of life was collected with questionnaires. RESULTS: Of the 223 cancer survivors (response rate 87 %), 71 % were employed. Of the cancer survivors who tried to obtain insurance, 6 % reported problems with obtaining health care insurance, 62 % with life insurance, and 16 % with a mortgage. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, higher age (OR 1.07, CI 1.02-1.11), higher level of fatigue (OR 1.07, CI 1.01-1.14), and lower educational level (OR 3.22, CI 1.46-7.09) were associated with not having employment. Employment was associated with higher quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: Many thyroid cancer survivors face problems when obtaining a life insurance, and older, fatigued, and lower educated thyroid cancer survivors may be at risk for not having employment
Development of a PbWO4 Detector for Single-Shot Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy at the GBAR Experiment
We have developed a PbWO4 (PWO) detector with a large dynamic range to measure the intensity of a positron beam and the absolute density of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) cloud it creates. A simulation study shows that a setup based on such detectors may be used to determine the angular distribution of the emission and reflection of o-Ps to reduce part of the uncertainties of the measurement. These will allow to improve the precision in the measurement of the cross-section for the (anti)hydrogen formation by (anti)proton-positronium charge exchange and to optimize the yield of antihydrogen ion which is an essential parameter in the GBAR experiment
Heterovalent and A-atom effects in A(B'B'')O3 perovskite alloys
Using first-principles supercell calculations, we have investigated
energetic, structural and dielectric properties of three different A(B'B'')O_3
perovskite alloys: Ba(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3 (BZN), Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3
(PZN), and Pb(Zr_{1/3}Ti_{2/3})O_3 (PZT). In the homovalent alloy PZT, the
energetics are found to be mainly driven by atomic relaxations. In the
heterovalent alloys BZN and PZN, however, electrostatic interactions among B'
and B'' atoms are found to be very important. These electrostatic interactions
are responsible for the stabilization of the observed compositional long-range
order in BZN. On the other hand, cell relaxations and the formation of short
Pb--O bonds could lead to a destabilization of the same ordered structure in
PZN. Finally, comparing the dielectric properties of homovalent and
heterovalent alloys, the most dramatic difference arises in connection with the
effective charges of the B' atom. We find that the effective charge of Zr in
PZT is anomalous, while in BZN and PZN the effective charge of Zn is close to

WormBase 2007
WormBase (www.wormbase.org) is the major publicly available database of information about Caenorhabditis elegans, an important system for basic biological and biomedical research. Derived from the initial ACeDB database of C. elegans genetic and sequence information, WormBase now includes the genomic, anatomical and functional information about C. elegans, other Caenorhabditis species and other nematodes. As such, it is a crucial resource not only for C. elegans biologists but the larger biomedical and bioinformatics communities. Coverage of core areas of C. elegans biology will allow the biomedical community to make full use of the results of intensive molecular genetic analysis and functional genomic studies of this organism. Improved search and display tools, wider cross-species comparisons and extended ontologies are some of the features that will help scientists extend their research and take advantage of other nematode species genome sequences

At nuclear fusion reactors, CVD diamond detectors are considered an advantageous solution for neutron flux monitoring. For such applications the knowledge of the cross section of neutron-induced nuclear reactions on natural carbon are of high importance. Especially the (n,α0) reactions, yielding the highest energy reaction products, are of relevance as they can be clearly distinguished in the spectrum. The 13C(n,α0)10Be cross section was measured relative to 12C(n,α0)9Be at the Van de Graaff facility of EC-JRC Geel, Belgium, at 14.3 MeV and 17.0 MeV neutron energies. The measurement was performed with an sCVD (single-crystal Chemical Vapor Deposition) diamond detector, where the detector material acted simultaneously as sample and as sensor. A novel data analysis technique, based on pulse-shape discrimination, allowed an efficient reduction of background events. The results of the measurement are presented and compared to previously published values for this cross-section

Entourage: the immune microenvironment following follicular lymphoma
In follicular lymphoma, nonmalignant immune cells are important. Follicular lymphoma depends on CD4+ cells, but CD8+ cells counteract it. We hypothesized that the presence of follicular lymphoma is associated with higher CD4+ than CD8+ cell numbers in the tumor microenvironment but not in the immune system. Using flow cytometry, pre-treatment and follow-up CD4/CD8 ratios were estimated in the bone marrow, blood and lymph nodes of untreated follicular lymphoma patients in two independent data sets (N1=121; N2=166). The ratios were analyzed for their relation with bone marrow lymphoma involvement. Bone marrows were also investigated with immunohistochemistry. In either data set, the bone marrow CD4/CD8 ratios were higher in bone marrows involved with lymphoma (P=0.043 and 0.0002, respectively). The mean CD4/CD8 ratio was 1.0 in uninvolved and 1.4 in involved bone marrows. Also higher in involved bone marrows were CD4/CD56 and CD3CD25/CD3 ratios. No blood or lymph node ratios differed between bone marrow-negative and -positive patients. Sequential samples showed increased bone marrow CD4/CD8 ratios in all cases of progression to bone marrow involvement. Immunohistochemistry showed CD4+, CD57+, programmed death-1+, forkhead box protein 3+ and CD21+ cells accumulated inside the lymphoma infiltrates, whereas CD8+, CD56+ and CD68+ cells were outside the infiltrates. This study provides evidence in vivo that the microenvironment changes upon follicular lymphoma involvement
