    Characterizing Quantum-Dot Blinking Using Noise Power Spectra

    Fluctuations in the fluorescence from macroscopic ensembles of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots have the spectral form of 1/f noise. The measured power spectral density reflects the fluorescence intermittency of individual dots with power-law distributions of "on" and "off" times, and can thus serve as a simple method for characterizing such blinking behavior

    Розглянуто проблему інфляції як фундаментальну проблему для розвитку будь-якої країни. Стверджено, що в економічній науці не існує єдиних підходів щодо суті цього явища, причин появи і наслідків, а також основних напрямів боротьби з інфляцією. Макроекономічний інфляційний вплив на економіку має свою специфіку в умовах формування ринкових відносин країн перехідної економіки (наприклад, України). З застосуванням методології функціонального аналізу, системного підходу та аналогії проаналізовано причини і наслідки інфляції, антиінфляційну політику, яка проводиться в умовах ринкової економіки. Особливу увагу звернено на макроекономічні проблеми інфляції в економіці сучасної України. Зроблено висновки про необхідність проведення виважених як політичних, так і економічних рішень, від яких залежить майбутнє економіки нашої держави.Рассмотрена проблема инфляции как фундаментальную проблему для развития любой страны. Утверждено, что в экономической науке не существует единых подходов к сути этого явления, причин появления и последствий, а также основных направлений борьбы с инфляцией. Макроэкономический инфляционное воздействие на экономику имеет свою специфику в условиях формирования рыночных отношений стран переходной экономики (например, Украина). Применение методологии функционального анализа, системного подхода и аналогии проанализированы анализируются причины и последствия инфляции, антиинфляционную политику, которая проводится в условиях рыночной экономики. Особое внимание обращено на макроэкономические проблемы инфляции в экономике современной Украины. Сделаны выводы о необходимости проведения взвешенных как политических, так и экономических решений, от которых зависит будущее экономики государства.Inflation is a fundamental problem for the development of any country. There are no common approaches to the nature, causes and consequences of this phenomenon and the ways of its reduction in economics. Macroeconomical inflation impact on the economy has its own distinctive aspects in terms of the building of marketing relationships in the countries with transition economy (Ukraine, for example). Using methods of functional analysis, system analysis and analogy method the causes and consequences of inflation as well as antiinflationary policy conducted in a market economy are analyzed in the article. Special attention is paid to macro-economical problems of inflation in the economy of modern Ukraine. The conclusion about the necessity of making the deliberated political and economical decisions that affect the future economy of our country is made

    Characterization of Plum Procyanidins by Thiolytic Depolymerization

    The phenolic compounds of ?Green Gage? (GG) plums (Prunus domestica L.), ?Rainha Cla?udia Verde?, from a ?protected designation of origin? (PDO), in Portugal, were quantified in both flesh and skin tissues of plums collected in two different orchards (GG-V and GG-C). Analyzes of phenolic compounds were also performed on another GG European plum obtained in France (GG-F) and two other French plums, ?Mirabelle? (M) and ?Golden Japan? (GJ). Thiolysis was used for the first time in the analysis of plum phenolic compounds. This methodology showed that the flesh and skin contain a large proportion of flavan-3-ols, which account, respectively, for 92 and 85% in GJ, 61 and 44% in GG-V, 62 and 48% in GG-C, 54 and 27% in M, and 45 and 37% in GG-F. Terminal units of procyanidins observed in plums are mainly (+)-catechin (54?77% of all terminal units in flesh and 57?81% in skin). The GJ plums showed a phenolic composition different from all of the others, with a lower content of chlorogenic acid isomers and the presence of A-type procyanidins as dimers and terminal residues of polymerized forms. The average degree of polymerization (DPn) of plum procyanidins was higher in the flesh (5?9 units) than in the skin (4?6 units). Procyanidin B7 was observed in the flesh of all GG plums and in the skin of the Portuguese ones. Principal component analysis of the phenolic composition of the flesh and skin of these plums obtained after thiolysis allowed their distinction according to the variety and origin, opening the possibility of the use of phenolic composition for variety/origin identification

    Let Fm be a free group with m generators and let R be a normal subgroup such that Fm /R projects onto ℤ. We give a lower bound for the growth rate of the group Fm / R′(where R′ is the derived subgroup of R) in terms of the length ρ= ρ(R) of the shortest non-trivial relation in R. It follows that the growth rate of Fm / R′ approaches 2m-1 as ρ approaches infinity. This implies that the growth rate of an m-generated amenable group can be arbitrarily close to the maximum value 2m- 1. This answers an open question of P. de la Harpe. We prove that such groups can be found in the class of abelian-by-nilpotent groups as well as in the class of virtually metabelian group

    Spi-1, Fli-1 and Fli-3 (miR-17-92) Oncogenes Contribute to a Single Oncogenic Network Controlling Cell Proliferation in Friend Erythroleukemia

    Clonal erythroleukemia developing in susceptible mice infected by Friend virus complex are associated with highly recurrent proviral insertions at one of three loci called Spi-1, Fli-1 or Fli-3, leading to deregulated expression of oncogenic Spi-1 or Fli-1 transcription factors or miR-17-92 miRNA cluster, respectively. Deregulated expression of each of these three oncogenes has been independently shown to contribute to cell proliferation of erythroleukemic clones. Previous studies showed a close relationship between Spi-1 and Fli-1, which belong to the same ETS family, Spi-1 activating fli-1 gene, and both Spi-1 and Fli-1 activating multiple common target genes involved in ribosome biogenesis. In this study, we demonstrated that Spi-1 and Fli-1 are also involved in direct miR-17-92 transcriptional activation through their binding to a conserved ETS binding site in its promoter. Moreover, we demonstrated that physiological re-expression of exogenous miR-17 and miR-20a are able to partially rescue the proliferation loss induced by Fli-1 knock-down and identified HBP1 as a target of these miRNA in erythroleukemic cells. These results establish that three of the most recurrently activated oncogenes in Friend erythroleukemia are actually involved in a same oncogenic network controlling cell proliferation. The putative contribution of a similar ETS-miR-17-92 network module in other normal or pathological proliferative contexts is discussed

    Solving the riddle of codon usage preferences: a test for translational selection

    Translational selection is responsible for the unequal usage of synonymous codons in protein coding genes in a wide variety of organisms. It is one of the most subtle and pervasive forces of molecular evolution, yet, establishing the underlying causes for its idiosyncratic behaviour across living kingdoms has proven elusive to researchers over the past 20 years. In this study, a statistical model for measuring translational selection in any given genome is developed, and the test is applied to 126 fully sequenced genomes, ranging from archaea to eukaryotes. It is shown that tRNA gene redundancy and genome size are interacting forces that ultimately determine the action of translational selection, and that an optimal genome size exists for which this kind of selection is maximal. Accordingly, genome size also presents upper and lower boundaries beyond which selection on codon usage is not possible. We propose a model where the coevolution of genome size and tRNA genes explains the observed patterns in translational selection in all living organisms. This model finally unifies our understanding of codon usage across prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Helicobacter pylori, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Homo sapiens are codon usage paradigms that can be better understood under the proposed model

    Decaying shock studies of phase transitions in MgOSiO2 systems: implications for the Super-Earths interiors

    We report an experimental study of the phase diagrams of periclase (MgO), enstatite (MgSiO3) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at high pressures. We investigated with laser driven decaying shocks the pressure/temperature curves of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 between 0.2-1.2 TPa, 0.12-0.5 TPa and 0.2-0.85 TPa respectively. A melting signature has been observed in MgO at 0.47 TPa and 9860 K, while no phase changes were observed neither in MgSiO3 nor in Mg2SiO4. An increasing of reflectivity of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 liquids have been detected at 0.55 TPa -12 760 K, 0.15 TPa - 7540 K, 0.2 TPa - 5800 K, respectively. In contrast to SiO2, melting and metallization of these compounds do not coincide implying the presence of poor electrically conducting liquids close to the melting lines. This has important implications for the generation of dynamos in Super-earths mantles
