    Sustainable earth walls to meet the building regulations

    The thermal conductivity and diffusivity of un-fired clay bricks, a straw clay mixture and straw bales have been measured using a thermal probe technique, with an iterative method for data analysis. The steady-state air-to-air thermal transmittance, or U-value, and the time-dependent thermal properties of some proposed sustainable earth wall constructions are presented. Sustainable cavity walls of un-fired clay bricks with paper, straw or wool cavity insulation have thermal transmittances less than 0.35 W/m2 K, and therefore meet the current United Kingdom Building Regulations. A review of possible methods for thermally up-grading existing earth walls, by adding an internal insulated timber frame construction, again demonstrates possible compliance with the current UK thermal regulations

    Chromatic thresholds in dense random graphs

    The chromatic threshold δχ(H,p)\delta_\chi(H,p) of a graph HH with respect to the random graph G(n,p)G(n,p) is the infimum over d>0d > 0 such that the following holds with high probability: the family of HH-free graphs GG(n,p)G \subset G(n,p) with minimum degree δ(G)dpn\delta(G) \ge dpn has bounded chromatic number. The study of the parameter δχ(H):=δχ(H,1)\delta_\chi(H) := \delta_\chi(H,1) was initiated in 1973 by Erd\H{o}s and Simonovits, and was recently determined for all graphs HH. In this paper we show that δχ(H,p)=δχ(H)\delta_\chi(H,p) = \delta_\chi(H) for all fixed p(0,1)p \in (0,1), but that typically δχ(H,p)δχ(H)\delta_\chi(H,p) \ne \delta_\chi(H) if p=o(1)p = o(1). We also make significant progress towards determining δχ(H,p)\delta_\chi(H,p) for all graphs HH in the range p=no(1)p = n^{-o(1)}.     Promoting family inclusive practice in Home Treatment Teams

    Purpose Families play an instrumental role in helping their relatives experiencing mental health issues to stay well. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and potential benefits of a bespoke one-day workshop for practitioners working with families in crisis. Design The study was an uncontrolled evaluation of a one-day workshop for Home Treatment Team practitioners (HTTs) using pre and post-workshop questionnaires. Findings Eighty three practitioners participated. Overall, there was strong agreement for the involvement of families in their relative’s care, which increased marginally following the workshop. There were significant changes in views about talking to family members without service user consent (p=0.001) and keeping them informed of their relative’s wellbeing (p=0.02). Qualitative feedback indicated that participants enjoyed the interactive elements of the workshop, particularly the opportunity to practise skills. It encouraged participants to share knowledge and facilitate the integration of family work into their professional role. Research and practical implications Support for families can contribute to effective mediation of crisis and continuation of care; factors that are important in reducing admission rates and protecting relationships. Participants’ responses suggested that this one-day workshop offered a helpful introduction to a family approach at times of a mental health crisis, which could be routinely offered in HTTs. Originality/value A social systems perspective is at the heart of a successful HTT approach to managing mental health crises. This workshop offered a feasible means to address one element of the necessary conditions for family-focused practice; practitioner confidence to talk with families at times of crisis

    The effect of endogenous mRNA levels on co-suppression in tomato

    AbstractIntroduction of truncated polygalacturonase (PG) transgenes into tomato plants caused the production of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and co-suppression of both the endogenous and PG transgenes in ripening fruits by post-transcriptional gene silencing. In order to test the possible effect on co-suppression of the endogenous PG mRNA level, we transferred the PG transgenes from a PG-silenced line (wild type background) by crossing to two ripening regulatory mutants with reduced PG: Never-ripe (Nr, ∼10% endogenous PG mRNA compared to wild type) and ripening-inhibitor (rin, ∼1% endogenous PG mRNA) and to wild type (as a control). The PG transgenes caused strong co-suppression of the transgenes and the endogenous PG gene in cells with high PG mRNA background (wild type) and silencing appeared to be linked with higher transgene copy number and/or a particular transgene locus. In cells with low endogenous PG mRNA accumulation (Nr), the endogenous PG gene was preferentially suppressed compared to the transgenes, whose expression was not reduced significantly. The expression of the transgenes was also not reduced in the very low PG background (rin), in which endogenous PG was barely detectable. In all the analysed lines with all three PG background levels, siRNAs accumulated in leaves and green fruits, in which the endogenous PG gene is not transcribed. The relatively abundant production of siRNAs in most of the lines was linked with a particular transgene insert. These results suggest that a certain threshold level of endogenous PG mRNA is required for the co-suppression of the truncated PG transgenes and the endogenous PG gene or for extensive silencing of the transgenes

    Three-Dimensional Simulations of Magnetized Superbubbles: New Insights into the Importance of MHD Effects on Observed Quantities

    We present three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of superbubbles, to study the importance of MHD effects in the interpretation of images from recent surveys of the Galactic plane. These simulations focus mainly on atmospheres defined by an exponential density distribution and the Dickey & Lockman (1990) density distribution. In each case, the magnetic field is parallel to the Galactic plane and we investigate cases with either infinite scale height (constant magnetic field) or a constant ratio of gas pressure to magnetic pressure. The three-dimensional structure of superbubbles in these simulations is discussed with emphasis on the axial ratio of the cavity as a function of magnetic field strength and the age of the bubble. We investigate systematic errors in the age of the bubble and scale height of the surrounding medium that may be introduced by modeling the data with purely hydrodynamic models. Age estimates derived with symmetric hydrodynamic models fitted to an asymmetric magnetized superbubble can differ by up to a factor of four, depending on the direction of the line of sight. The scale height of the surrounding medium based on the Kompaneets model may be up to 50% lower than the actual scale height. We also present the first ever predictions of Faraday rotation by a magnetized superbubble based on three-dimensional MHD simulations.     Synthesis of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) derivatives functionalised with two, four or eight hydroxyl groups

    Short synthetic routes to a range of BEDT-TTF derivatives functionalised with two, four or eight hydroxyl groups are reported, of interest because of their potential for introducing hydrogen bonding between donor and anion into their radical cation salts. The cycloaddition of 1,3-dithiole-2,4,5-trithione with alkenes to construct 5,6-dihydro-1,3-dithiolo[4,5-b]1,4-dithiin-2-thiones is a key step, with homo- or hetero-coupling procedures and O-deprotection completing the syntheses. The first synthesis of a single diastereomer of tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)BEDT-TTF, the cis, trans product, was achieved by careful choice of O-protecting groups to facilitate separation of homo- and hetero-coupled products. Cyclisation of the trithione with enantiopure 1R,2R,5R,6R-bis(O,O-isopropylidene)hex-3-ene-1,2,5,6-tetrol (from D-mannitol) gave two separable diastereomeric thiones, which can be transformed to enantiomeric BEDT-TTF derivatives with four or eight hydroxyl groups
