    Synthesis and Characterization of High Temperature Properties of YBa2Cu3O6+δ Superconductor as Potential Cathode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

    YBa2Cu3O6+δ (YBC) oxygen deficient perovskite was synthesized by an auto-combustion method and was studied as potential cathode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC). Synchrotron X-ray thermodiffraction in air shows a phase transition from orthorhombic Pmmm to tetragonal P4/mmm space groups at ~ 425 °C. The chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte was investigated in air where certain reactivity wasobserved above 800 °C. However, the main phase is Ba(Ce1-xYx)O3, a good ionic conductor. The catalytic performance in air was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements on YBC/GDC/YBC symmetrical cells. The area specific resistance (ASR) values change from 13.66 to 0.14 Ω cm2 between 500 and 800 °C, with activation energy (Ea) of 0.41 eV.     Congestión vehicular en puentes críticos de Pilar

    El objetivo general de este proyecto es analizar las causas de origen y consecuencias del tránsito vehicular que ocurren en los cruces de la autopista por medio de los puentes aéreos o en desnivel. Se busca reducir y optimizar los tiempos de demoras y evitar las detenciones imprevistas de los vehículos. Asimismo, el estudio se propone determinar órdenes de prioridades de paso. También se espera contribuir a una reducción en la tasa de accidentes, en el costo de combustibles consumidos, a mejorar la eficiencia energética y reducir significativamente el impacto ambiental que produce el exceso de combustible consumido. En este sentido, se proponen diversas estrategias sobre la base de las herramientas provistas por las Tecnologías de la Información, Comunicación y Conectividad.Este estudio se inició a partir del conocimiento de las reglamentaciones vigentes en el área del Partido de Pilar, Provincia de Buenos Aires y los datos e información suministrados por el Municipio, Defensa Civil, Bomberos, Institutos Educativos, Policía, Empresas, y ciudadanos usuarios. Se realizó un análisis de carácter descriptivo y explicativo de la situación observada en cada uno de los cruces. Asimismo, se indagó sobre la disposición de los vecinos para aceptar la circulación en vías de muy escaso tránsito. También se realizaron análisis comparativos en los niveles nacional e internacional sobre situaciones similares y su resolución. Los avances de la investigación permitieron definir “puntos de encuentro vehicular” (lugares donde dos o más vehículos pueden encontrarse e impedir la circulación de otros) y la falta de “fluidez vehicular” en las vías.El trabajo realizado hasta el momento incluyó también un relevamiento de sistemas informáticos que permitan la señalización inteligente para estas vías de circulación y aledañas, y para el registro vehicular. Nuestros investigadores continúan avanzando en los trabajos previstos con la incorporación de conocimientos de instituciones de la ciudad de Pilar, tales como el Automóvil Club Argentino, y de profesionales de la Ingeniería de Tránsito, que han aportado soluciones a otras problemáticas relacionadas.Por último, cabe agregar que con este análisis se espera proporcionar alternativas que resuelvan en forma inteligente los diferentes congestionamientos, cruces inesperados y demoras que ocurren en inmediaciones a puentes que cruzan las autopistas, no solamente ocasionados por el crecimiento de la demanda de los caminos de circulación, sino también por la simultaneidad de su uso y por eventualidades o situaciones de emergencia que puedan ocurrir, además de proveer opciones de circulación adecuadas y de mayor eficiencia

    Cardiac and vascular effects of diltiazem, dobutamine and amrinone, drugs used after myocardial revascularization

    Hemodynamic care during postoperative management of myocardial revascularization should include vasorelaxing drugs to insure adequate graft and coronary flow, and stimulation of stroke volume to maintain vascular perfusion pressure. We tested the cardiac (inotropic and lusitropic) and vascular (relaxant) effects of diltiazem (0.1 nM to 0.1 mM), dobutamine (10 μM to 10 mM) and amrinone (10 μM to 1 mM) on isolated rat atria and thoracic aorta, and also on isolated human saphenous vein (HSV) and human mammary artery (HMA). Dobutamine produced a maximal positive inotropic effect (+dF/dtmax = 29 ± 7%) at its ED50 for aortic relaxation (88 ± 7 μM). Conversely, at their ED50 for aortic relaxation diltiazem depressed myocardial contractility and amrinone did not exhibit myocardial effects. In HSV and HMA contracted with 80 mM potassium, diltiazem and dobutamine (but not amrinone) had a vasorelaxant activity similar to that in rat aorta. Norepinephrine-contracted human vessels were significantly more sensitive than potassium-contracted vessels to the relaxant effect of amrinone (ED50 HMA = 15 ± 5 μM, ED50 HSV = 72 ± 31 μM, P < 0.05). We conclude that at concentrations still devoid of myocardial effects dobutamine and amrinone are effective dilators in graft segment vessels and rat aorta contracted by membrane depolarization. If the difference between aortic and myocardial tissue still holds in human tissues, at the appropriate concentrations these drugs should be expected to improve cardiac performance while still contributing to the maintenance of graft patency.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

    How does a cadaver model work for testing ultrasound diagnostic capability for rheumatic-like tendon damage?

    To establish whether a cadaver model can serve as an effective surrogate for the detection of tendon damage characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In addition, we evaluated intraobserver and interobserver agreement in the grading of RA-like tendon tears shown by US, as well as the concordance between the US findings and the surgically induced lesions in the cadaver model. RA-like tendon damage was surgically induced in the tibialis anterior tendon (TAT) and tibialis posterior tendon (TPT) of ten ankle/foot fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens. Of the 20 tendons examined, six were randomly assigned a surgically induced partial tear; six a complete tear; and eight left undamaged. Three rheumatologists, experts in musculoskeletal US, assessed from 1 to 5 the quality of US imaging of the cadaveric models on a Likert scale. Tendons were then categorized as having either no damage, (0); partial tear, (1); or complete tear (2). All 20 tendons were blindly and independently evaluated twice, over two rounds, by each of the three observers. Overall, technical performance was satisfactory for all items in the two rounds (all values over 2.9 in a Likert scale 1-5). Intraobserver and interobserver agreement for US grading of tendon damage was good (mean κ values 0.62 and 0.71, respectively), with greater reliability found in the TAT than the TPT. Concordance between US findings and experimental tendon lesions was acceptable (70-100 %), again greater for the TAT than for the TPT. A cadaver model with surgically created tendon damage can be useful in evaluating US metric properties of RA tendon lesions

    Biodiversity and threats in non-protected areas: A multidisciplinary and multi-taxa approach focused on the Atlantic Forest

    Along many decades, protected environments were targeted by the scientific community for ecological research and for the collection of scientific information related to environmental aspects and biodiversity. However, most of the territory in hotspot regions with weak or even non legal protection has been left aside. These non-protected areas (NPA) could host high biodiversity values. This paper addresses how scientific effort on a NPA (CIAR) of 700 ha from the Atlantic Rain Forest, generates new information and tools for large-scale environmental and biodiversity management in NPAs. Information published during the last decade was summarized and complemented with subsequent novel data about biodiversity (new species, first records, DNA and chemical analyses, etc.). The results showed: 1 new genus (arachnid), 6 new species and several putative new species (fish and arthropod), 6 vulnerable species (bird and mammal) and 36 first records for Argentina (fish, arthropod, platyhelminth and fungi). When compared with protected natural areas of the same biome, the CIAR showed highly valuable aspects for fauna and environment conservation, positioning this NPA as a worldwide hotspot for some taxa. Indeed, when compared to international hotspots in a coordinated Malaise trap program, the CIAR showed 8,651 different barcode index numbers (∼species) of arthropods, 80% of which had not been previously barcoded. Molecules like Inoscavin A, with antifungal activity against phytopathogens, was isolated for the first time in Phellinus merrillii fungi. The study of major threats derived from anthropic activities measured 20 trace elements, 18 pesticides (i.e. endosulfans, chlorpyrifos, DDTs, HCHs) and 27 pharmaceuticals and drugs (i.e. benzoylecgonine and norfluoxetine) in different biotic and abiotic matrices (water, sediment, fish and air biomonitors). This integrated data analysis shows that biodiversity research in NPA is being undervalued and how multidisciplinary and multi-taxa surveys creates a new arena for research and a pathway towards sustainable development in emerging countries with biodiversity hotspots.Fil: Avigliano, Esteban.     Propuesta metodológica para la construcción y selección de modelos digitales de elevación de alta precisión

    Digital Elevation Models improve accuracy in terrain analysis. This work compared different interpolation methods using statistical criteria in a topographic survey of 339 points raised with a total station in the “San Juan de Lagunillas” area (Venezuela). The existence of a significant trend process with spatial autocorrelation modeled by an isotropic Gaussian semivariogram was documented. The kriging allowed to obtain residuals less than a minimum tolerable error equal to 0.1 m. The residual kriging was the best evaluated in cross validation with exclusion (absolute mean error of 0.71 m). The disjunctive kriging showed a lower error average but a wider error range and the highest mean absolute error (12.8 m). The other kriging showed mean error variance greater than 1.3 m and absolute minimum errors greater than 0.85 m. Due to the high dependence on the model specification form, graphics are recommended for a better fit.Los modelos digitales de elevación mejoran la precisión en el análisis del terreno. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo comparar diferentes métodos de interpolación utilizando criterios estadísticos en un levantamiento topográfico de 339 puntos levantados con estación total en la zona de San Juan de Lagunillas (Venezuela). Se documentó la existencia de un proceso de tendencia significativa con autocorrelación espacial modelada mediante un semivariograma gaussiano isotrópico. Los kriging consiguieron residuales menores a un error mínimo tolerable igual 0.1 m. El kriging residual fue el mejor evaluado en la validación cruzada con exclusión (error medio absoluto de 0.71 m). El kriging disyuntivo tuvo menor media del error pero un amplio rango del error y el mayor error medio absoluto (12.8 m). Los otros kriging tienen medias de la varianza del error superiores a 1.3 m y errores mínimos absolutos superiores a 0.85 m. Debido a la alta dependencia en la forma de especificación de los modelos se recomiendan las ayudas gráficas para un mejor ajuste

    No detection of methane on Mars from early ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter observations

    The detection of methane on Mars has been interpreted as indicating that geochemical or biotic activities could persist on Mars today. A number of different measurements of methane show evidence of transient, locally elevated methane concentrations and seasonal variations in background methane concentrations. These measurements, however, are difficult to reconcile with our current understanding of the chemistry and physics of the Martian atmosphere, which-given methane's lifetime of several centuries-predicts an even, well mixed distribution of methane. Here we report highly sensitive measurements of the atmosphere of Mars in an attempt to detect methane, using the ACS and NOMAD instruments onboard the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter from April to August 2018. We did not detect any methane over a range of latitudes in both hemispheres, obtaining an upper limit for methane of about 0.05 parts per billion by volume, which is 10 to 100 times lower than previously reported positive detections. We suggest that reconciliation between the present findings and the background methane concentrations found in the Gale crater would require an unknown process that can rapidly remove or sequester methane from the lower atmosphere before it spreads globally

    Martian dust storm impact on atmospheric H<sub>2</sub>O and D/H observed by ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter

    Global dust storms on Mars are rare but can affect the Martian atmosphere for several months. They can cause changes in atmospheric dynamics and inflation of the atmosphere, primarily owing to solar heating of the dust. In turn, changes in atmospheric dynamics can affect the distribution of atmospheric water vapour, with potential implications for the atmospheric photochemistry and climate on Mars. Recent observations of the water vapour abundance in the Martian atmosphere during dust storm conditions revealed a high-altitude increase in atmospheric water vapour that was more pronounced at high northern latitudes, as well as a decrease in the water column at low latitudes. Here we present concurrent, high-resolution measurements of dust, water and semiheavy water (HDO) at the onset of a global dust storm, obtained by the NOMAD and ACS instruments onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. We report the vertical distribution of the HDO/H O ratio (D/H) from the planetary boundary layer up to an altitude of 80 kilometres. Our findings suggest that before the onset of the dust storm, HDO abundances were reduced to levels below detectability at altitudes above 40 kilometres. This decrease in HDO coincided with the presence of water-ice clouds. During the storm, an increase in the abundance of H2O and HDO was observed at altitudes between 40 and 80 kilometres. We propose that these increased abundances may be the result of warmer temperatures during the dust storm causing stronger atmospheric circulation and preventing ice cloud formation, which may confine water vapour to lower altitudes through gravitational fall and subsequent sublimation of ice crystals. The observed changes in H2O and HDO abundance occurred within a few days during the development of the dust storm, suggesting a fast impact of dust storms on the Martian atmosphere
