Times of arrival: Bohm beats Kijowski
We prove that the Bohmian arrival time of the 1D Schroedinger evolution
violates the quadratic form structure on which Kijowski's axiomatic treatment
of arrival times is based. Within Kijowski's framework, for a free right moving
wave packet, the various notions of arrival time (at a fixed point x on the
real line) all yield the same average arrival time. We derive an inequality
relating the average Bohmian arrival time to the one of Kijowksi. We prove that
the average Bohmian arrival time is less than Kijowski's one if and only if the
wave packet leads to position probability backflow through x. Otherwise the two
average arrival times coincide.Comment: 9 page
The effect of heterogeneity on decorrelation mechanisms in spiking neural networks: a neuromorphic-hardware study
High-level brain function such as memory, classification or reasoning can be
realized by means of recurrent networks of simplified model neurons. Analog
neuromorphic hardware constitutes a fast and energy efficient substrate for the
implementation of such neural computing architectures in technical applications
and neuroscientific research. The functional performance of neural networks is
often critically dependent on the level of correlations in the neural activity.
In finite networks, correlations are typically inevitable due to shared
presynaptic input. Recent theoretical studies have shown that inhibitory
feedback, abundant in biological neural networks, can actively suppress these
shared-input correlations and thereby enable neurons to fire nearly
independently. For networks of spiking neurons, the decorrelating effect of
inhibitory feedback has so far been explicitly demonstrated only for
homogeneous networks of neurons with linear sub-threshold dynamics. Theory,
however, suggests that the effect is a general phenomenon, present in any
system with sufficient inhibitory feedback, irrespective of the details of the
network structure or the neuronal and synaptic properties. Here, we investigate
the effect of network heterogeneity on correlations in sparse, random networks
of inhibitory neurons with non-linear, conductance-based synapses. Emulations
of these networks on the analog neuromorphic hardware system Spikey allow us to
test the efficiency of decorrelation by inhibitory feedback in the presence of
hardware-specific heterogeneities. The configurability of the hardware
substrate enables us to modulate the extent of heterogeneity in a systematic
manner. We selectively study the effects of shared input and recurrent
connections on correlations in membrane potentials and spike trains. Our
results confirm ...Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, supplement
Choking under pressure - Evidence of the causal effect of audience size on performance
We analyze performance under pressure and estimate the causal effect of audience size on the success of free throws in top-level professional basketball. We use data from the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the seasons 2007/08 through 2015/16. We exploit the exogenous variation in weather conditions on game day to establish a causal link between attendance size and performance. Our results confirm a sizeable and strong negative effect of the number of spectators on performance. Home teams in (non-critical) situations at the beginning of games perform worse when the audience is larger. This result is consistent with the theory of a home choke rather than a home field advantage. Our results have potentially large implications for general questions of workplace design and help to further understand how the social environment affects performance. We demonstrate that the amount of support, i.e. positive feedback, from a friendly audience does affect performance.Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Serie
On the rise of domain adverbials in Italian: the history of the -mente parlando construction
This paper investigates the history of -mente parlando, a construction that can be used in modern Italian either as a style disjunct (e. g. rigorosamente parlando âstrictly speakingâ) or as a domain adverbial (e. g. economicamente parlando âeconomically speakingâ). This functional difference will be accounted for synchronically as a case of constructional polysemy, with different semantic types of adjectives (mainly relational vs non-relational) occurring in the -mente slot leading to a different reading of the whole construction. Diachronically, the constructional polysemy appears to be the result of a metonymic shift from the older STYLE reading to the newer DOMAIN interpretation. A corpus-based investigation will analyze the syntactic, pragmatic and discursive conditions from which the different uses arose. While both variants are attested from the 14th century on, a massive expansion of domain adverbials formed by -mente parlando is observed only in the first half of the 19th century, a tendency which can be explained as a new fashion for ârationalistâ discourse organization and which corresponds to similar evolutions described for 19th-century English, French and Spanish
VLSI Implementation of a Spiking Neural Network
The health externalities of downsizing
We show that downsizing has substantial externalities on the health of workers who remain in the firm. To this end, we study mass layoff (ML) survivors in Austria, using workers who survive a ML themselves, but a few years in the future, as a control group. Based on highquality administrative data, we find evidence that downsizing has persistent effects on mental and physical health, and that these effects can be explained by workers fearing for their own jobs. We also show that health externalities due to downsizing imply non-negligible cost for firms, and that wage cuts may have similar effects

Fleming's bound for the decay of mixed states
Fleming's inequality is generalized to the decay function of mixed states. We
show that for any symmetric hamiltonian and for any density operator
on a finite dimensional Hilbert space with the orthogonal projection onto
the range of there holds the estimate \Tr(\Pi \rme^{-\rmi ht}\rho
\rme^{\rmi ht}) \geq\cos^{2}((\Delta h)_{\rho}t) for all real with
We show that equality either holds for all
or it does not hold for a single with All the density operators saturating the bound for
all i.e. the mixed intelligent states, are determined.Comment: 12 page
