    Weird inflects but OK : Making sense of morphological generation errors

    We conduct a manual error analysis of the CoNLL-SIGMORPHON 2017 Shared Task on Morphological Reinflection. In this task, systems are given a word in citation form (e.g., hug) and asked to produce the corresponding inflected form (e.g., the simple past hugged). This design lets us analyze errors much like we might analyze children's production errors. We propose an error taxonomy and use it to annotate errors made by the top two systems across twelve languages. Many of the observed errors are related to inflectional patterns sensitive to inherent linguistic properties such as animacy or affect; many others are failures to predict truly unpredictable inflectional behaviors. We also find nearly one quarter of the residual "errors" reflect errors in the gold data. © 2019 Association for Computational Linguistics.Peer reviewe

    Description of regional mitral annular nonplanarity in healthy human subjects: A novel methodology

    ObjectiveFinite-element analysis demonstrates that the nonplanar shape of the mitral annulus diminishes mitral leaflet stress. It has therefore been postulated that repair with annuloplasty rings that maintain the nonplanar shape of the annulus could increase repair durability. Although the global nonplanarity of the mitral annulus has been adequately characterized, design of such a ring requires a quantitative description of regional annular geometry. By using real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography in conjunction with available image processing software, we developed a methodology for describing regional annular geometry and applied it to the characterization of the normal human mitral annulus.MethodsFive healthy volunteers underwent mitral valve imaging with real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography. Regional annular height was calculated at 36 evenly spaced intervals.ResultsMaximal annular height/commissural width ratio was found to occur at the midpoint of the anterior annulus in all cases. These values averaged 26% ± 3.1%, whereas those for the midposterior annulus averaged 18% ± 3.0%. The average commissural width was 35.2 ± 6.0 mm. Although substantial spatial heterogeneity was observed, regional annular height at a given rotational position was highly conserved among subjects when normalized to commissural width.ConclusionsThese quantitative imaging and analytic techniques demonstrate that the normal human mitral annulus is regionally heterogeneous in its nonplanarity, and they establish a means of describing annular geometry at a regional level. With wider application, these techniques may be used both to characterize pathologic annular geometry and to optimize the design of mitral valve annuloplasty devices

    Students in Action Initiative

    The Students in Action Project in the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism was established in 2012 as a way of engaging students and working with stakeholders in a destination. The overall aim of the project was to immerse students in an active collaborative learning environment within the destination to identify ways in which tourism could be enhanced. In the 2014/2015 academic year the project involved over 300 students from a variety of programmes and modules working with local stakeholders in Wexford Town. To date the project has been successful in its aims to develop staff, student and community engagement and has generated positive impacts in terms of lecturer and student collaborations and has also provided substantial outcomes for the destination. Going forward, while posing challenges in terms of funding, timetabling and logistical issues, the project provides extensive opportunities for further enhancement of student engagement and collaborative learning

    Effects of mutations in the helix G region of horseradish peroxidase

    Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has long attracted intense research interest and is used in many biotechnological fields, including diagnostics, biosensors and biocatalysis. Enhancement of HRP catalytic activity and/or stability would further increase its usefulness. Based on prior art, we substituted solvent-exposed lysine and glutamic acid residues near the proximal helix G (Lys 232, 241; Glu 238, 239) and between helices F and Fâ€Č (Lys 174). Three single mutants (K232N, K232F, K241N) demonstrated increased stabilities against heat (up to 2-fold) and solvents (up to 4-fold). Stability gains are likely due to improved hydrogen bonding and space-fill characteristics introduced by the relevant substitution. Two double mutants showed stability gains but most double mutations were non-additive and non-synergistic. Substitutions of Lys 174 or Glu 238 were destabilising. Unexpectedly, notable alterations in steady-state Vm/E values occurred with reducing substrate ABTS (2,2â€Č-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)), despite the distance of the mutated positions from the active site

    Ultrathin Stable Ohmic Contacts for High-Temperature Operation of ÎČ\beta-Ga2_2O3_3 Devices

    Beta gallium oxide (ÎČ\beta-Ga2_2O3_3) shows significant promise in the high-temperature, high-power, and sensing electronics applications. However, long-term stable metallization layers for Ohmic contacts at high temperature present unique thermodynamic challenges. The current most common Ohmic contact design based on 20 nm of Ti has been repeatedly demonstrated to fail at even moderately elevated temperatures (300-400∘^{\circ}C) due to a combination of non-stoichiometric Ti/Ga2_2O3_3 interfacial reactions and kinetically favored Ti diffusion processes. Here we demonstrate stable Ohmic contacts for Ga2_2O3_3 devices operating up to 500-600∘^{\circ}C using ultrathin Ti layers with a self-limiting interfacial reaction. The ultrathin Ti layer in the 5nm Ti / 100nm Au contact stack is designed to fully oxidize while forming an Ohmic contact, thereby limiting both thermodynamic and kinetic instability. This novel contact design strategy results in an epitaxial conductive anatase titanium oxide interface layer that enables low-resistance Ohmic contacts that are stable both under long-term continuous operation (>500 hours) at 600∘^{\circ}C in vacuum (≀\leq 10−4^{-4} Torr), as well as after repeated thermal cycling (15 times) between room temperature and 550∘^{\circ}C in flowing N2_2. This stable Ohmic contact design will accelerate the development of high-temperature devices by enabling research focus to shift towards rectifying contacts and other interfacial layers.Comment: 25 Pages, 7 Figure

    Decision for reconstructive interventions of the upper limb in individuals with tetraplegia: the effect of treatment characteristics

    Objective: To determine the effect of treatment characteristics on the\ud decision for reconstructive interventions for the upper extremities (UE) in\ud subjects with tetraplegia. - \ud Setting: Seven specialized spinal cord injury centres in the Netherlands. - \ud Method: Treatment characteristics for UE reconstructive interventions were\ud determined. Conjoint analysis (CA) was used to determine the contribution\ud and the relative importance of the treatment characteristics on the decision\ud for therapy. Therefore, a number of different treatment scenarios using these\ud characteristics were established. Different pairs of scenarios were presented\ud to subjects who were asked to choose the preferred scenario of each set. - \ud Results: forty nine subjects with tetraplegia with a stable C5, C6 or C7\ud lesion were selected. All treatment characteristics significantly influenced\ud the choice for treatment. Relative importance of treatment characteristics\ud were: intervention type (surgery or surgery with FES implant) 13%, number\ud of operations 15%, in patient rehabilitation period 22%, ambulant\ud rehabilitation period 9%, complication rate 15%, improvement of elbow\ud function 10%, improvement of hand function 15%. In deciding for therapy\ud 40% of the subjects focused on one characteristic. - \ud Conclusion: CA is applicable in Spinal Cord Injury medicine to study the\ud effect of health outcomes and non-health outcomes on the decision for\ud treatment. Non-health outcomes which relate to the intensity of treatment\ud are equally important or even more important than functional outcome in the\ud decision for reconstructive UE surgery in subjects with tetraplegia
