The impact of different assumptions about reproductive potential and recruitment on a Management Strategy Evaluation for the Greenland halibut stock in NAFO Subarea 2 and Division 3KLMNO
We tested whether our perception of the performance of the adopted Harvest Control Rule (HCR) for Greenland halibut was robust to using different measures of Reproductive Potential (RP) combined with different assumptions about the stock recruit relationship to drive the stock dynamics in simulations. We tested the HCR using alternative stock recruitment functions (segmented regression, Ricker and modified Ricker) with different RP indices which vary in the level of biological complexity. The RP indices used in increasing order of biological information were: Biomass 10+, SSB with varying maturity at age (SSB), female SSB (FSB), and Total Egg Production (TEP). All Operating Models (OM) were based on the current accepted XSA assessment. Understanding the basis of uncertainty in the S/R relationships is generally the most difficult outstanding problem in fisheries assessment and management and it is a key problem in Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE). A Ricker stock recruitment function fits the Greenland halibut stock recruitment data better than the segmented regression for all the RP indices, except TEP. The results show that the inclusion of more biological information when estimating Reproductive Potential does not improve the stock recruitment fit for either (segmented regression or Ricker). The best fits in both cases were obtained in descending order with: 10+Biomass, SSB, FSB, and TEP. All the OMs based on the segmented regression have very similar results and seem to be robust to assumptions about RP. However, there was variability in the results of the different indices of RP in the Ricker and modified Ricker OMs and some impact on whether performance targets were met. The choice of stock recruit function had a greater impact than the inclusion of more biological information in the index of RP. The inclusion of alternative indices of RP is likely to have more of an impact for stocks with depleted reproductive capacity and/or where alternative indices have a greater effect on the S/R relationships.Postprint0,000
Dynamical properties of liquid Al near melting. An orbital-free molecular dynamics study
The static and dynamic structure of liquid Al is studied using the orbital
free ab-initio molecular dynamics method. Two thermodynamic states along the
coexistence line are considered, namely T = 943 K and 1323 K for which X-ray
and neutron scattering data are available. A new kinetic energy functional,
which fulfills a number of physically relevant conditions is employed, along
with a local first principles pseudopotential. In addition to a comparison with
experiment, we also compare our ab-initio results with those obtained from
conventional molecular dynamics simulations using effective interionic pair

Evaluation of total phenolics, anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity in purple tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa) genotypes
Purple tomatillo genotypes were evaluated for their total anthocyanin, phenolic and antioxidant capacity. The result showed that ICTS-UDG-9-224 and ICTS-UDG-9-32 had the highest amount of total phenolic compounds 10.08 and 9.6 mg GAE/g fresh weight in genotypes, respectively, followed by ICTS-UDG-1-1 and ICTS-UDG-2-2 (5.5 and 5.3 mg GAE/g fresh weight), respectively. The highest content of anthocyanins was found in the genotypes ICTS-UDG-9-32 (6.94 mg of pelargonidin 3-glucoside equivalents/g of fresh weight). In contrast, the genotypes ICTS-UDG-9-224 showed lowest values of antocyanins content. On the other hand, for total antioxidant capacity, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods showed that genotypes, ICTS-UDG-2-2 and ICTS-UDG-1-1 had the highest antioxidant capacity (approximately 80%) followed by genotypes ICTS-UDG-9-32 (55%) and ICTS-UDG-9-224 (28%), respectively. These results provide useful and important information for researchers in order to increase the antioxidant capacity and functional value of purple tomatillo for the food and nutraceutical industries.Key word: Antocyanins, purple tomatillos, bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity
Using LDGM Codes and Sparse Syndromes to Achieve Digital Signatures
In this paper, we address the problem of achieving efficient code-based
digital signatures with small public keys. The solution we propose exploits
sparse syndromes and randomly designed low-density generator matrix codes.
Based on our evaluations, the proposed scheme is able to outperform existing
solutions, permitting to achieve considerable security levels with very small

The Dense Molecular Gas and Nuclear Activity in the ULIRG IRAS 13120-5453
We present new ALMA Band 7 ( GHz) observations of the dense gas
tracers HCN, HCO, and CS in the local, single-nucleus, ultraluminous
infrared galaxy IRAS 13120-5453. We find centrally enhanced HCN (4-3) emission,
relative to HCO (4-3), but do not find evidence for radiative pumping of
HCN. Considering the size of the starburst (0.5 kpc) and the estimated
supernovae rate of yr, the high HCN/HCO ratio can be
explained by an enhanced HCN abundance as a result of mechanical heating by the
supernovae, though the active galactic nucleus and winds may also contribute
additional mechanical heating. The starburst size implies a high
of kpc, slightly below predictions of
radiation-pressure limited starbursts. The HCN line profile has low-level
wings, which we tentatively interpret as evidence for outflowing dense
molecular gas. However, the dense molecular outflow seen in the HCN line wings
is unlikely to escape the galaxy and is destined to return to the nucleus and
fuel future star formation. We also present modeling of Herschel observations
of the HO lines and find a nuclear dust temperature of K. IRAS
13120-5453 has a lower dust temperature and than is inferred for
the systems termed "compact obscured nuclei" (such as Arp 220 and Mrk 231). If
IRAS 13120-5453 has undergone a compact obscured nucleus phase, we are likely
witnessing it at a time when the feedback has already inflated the nuclear ISM

The nature of V39: an LBV candidate or LBV impostor in the very low metallicity galaxy IC 1613?

Context: Very few examples of luminous blue variable (LBV) stars or LBV
candidates (LBVc) are known, particularly at metallicities below the SMC. The
LBV phase is crucial for the evolution of massive stars, and its behavior with
metallicity is poorly known. V39 in IC 1613 is a well-known photometric
variable, with B-band changes larger than 1mag. over its period. The star,
previously proposed to be a projection of a Galactic W Virginis and an IC 1613
red supergiant, shows features that render it a possible LBVc.
Method: We investigate mid-resolution blue and red VLT-VIMOS spectra of V39,
covering a time span of 40 days, and perform a quantitative analysis of the
combined spectrum using the model atmosphere code CMFGEN.
Results: We identify strong Balmer and FeII P-Cygni profiles, and a hybrid
spectrum resembling a B-A supergiant in the blue and a G-star in the red. No
significant Vrad variations are detected, and the spectral changes are small
over the photometric period. Our analysis places V39 in the low-luminosity part
of the LBV and LBVc region, but it is also consistent with a sgB[e] star.
Conclusions: The radial velocity indicates that V39 belongs to IC 1613. The
lack of Vrad changes and spectroscopic variations excludes binary scenarios.
The features observed are not consistent with a W Virginis star, and this
possibility is also discarded. We propose that the star is a B-A LBVc or sgB[e]
star surrounded by a thick disk precessing around it.
If confirmed, V39 would be the lowest metallicity resolved LBV candidate
known to date. Alternatively, it could represent a new transient phase of

Gauge fields, ripples and wrinkles in graphene layers
We analyze elastic deformations of graphene sheets which lead to effective
gauge fields acting on the charge carriers. Corrugations in the substrate
induce stresses, which, in turn, can give rise to mechanical instabilities and
the formation of wrinkles. Similar effects may take place in suspended graphene
