Learning useful communication structures for groups of agents

    Get PDF
Coordination of altruistic agents to solve optimization problems can be significantly enhanced when inter-agent communication is allowed. In this paper we present an evolutionary approach to learn optimal communication structures for groups of agents. The agents learn to solve the Online Partitioning Problem, but our ideas can easily be adapted to other problem fields. With our approach we can find the optimal communication partners for each agent in a static environment. In a dynamic environment we figure out a simple relation between each position of agents in space and the optimal number of communication partners. A concept for the establishment of relevant communication connections between certain agents will be shown whereby the space the agents are located in will be divided into several regions. These regions will be described mathematically. After a learning process the algorithm assigns an appropriate number of communication partners for every agent in an - arbitrary located - group.1st IFIP International Conference on Biologically Inspired Cooperative Computing - CommunicationRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Interferon-beta-related tumefactive brain lesion in a Caucasian patient with neuromyelitis optica and clinical stabilization with tocilizumab

Background: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a severely disabling inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system and is often misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). There is increasing evidence that treatment options shown to be beneficial in MS, including interferon-β (IFN-β), are detrimental in NMO. Case presentation: We here report the first Caucasian patient with aquaporin 4 (AQP4) antibody (NMO-IgG)-seropositive NMO presenting with a tumefactive brain lesion on treatment with IFN-β. Disease started with relapsing optic neuritis and an episode of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) in the absence of any brain MRI lesions or cerebrospinal fluid-restricted oligoclonal bands. After initial misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) the patient received subcutaneous IFN-β1b and, subsequently, subcutaneous IFN-β1a therapy for several years. Under this treatment, the patient showed persisting relapse activity and finally presented with a severe episode of subacute aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis due to a large T2 hyperintensive tumefactive lesion of the left brain hemisphere and a smaller T2 lesion on the right side. Despite rituximab therapy two further LETM episodes occurred, resulting in severe neurological deficits. Therapeutic blockade of the interleukin (IL)-6 signalling pathway by tocilizumab was initiated, followed by clinical and radiological stabilization. Conclusion: Our case (i) illustrates the relevance of correctly distinguishing NMO and MS since these disorders differ markedly in their responsiveness to immunomodulatory and -suppressive therapies; (ii) confirms and extends a previous report describing the development of tumefactive brain lesions under IFN-β therapy in two Asian NMO patients; and (iii) suggests tocilizumab as a promising therapeutic alternative in highly active NMO disease courses

A Case of Relapsing-Remitting Neuroborreliosis? Challenges in the Differential Diagnosis of Recurrent Myelitis

We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with 4 episodes of myelitis with pleocytosis, a positive Borrelia burgdorferi serology with positive antibody indices, and full recovery each time after antibiotic and steroid treatment, suggesting neuroborreliosis. We nevertheless believe that recurrent neuroborreliosis is improbable based on the levels of the chemokine CXCL13 in cerebrospinal fluid and favor the diagnosis of post-infectious autoimmune-mediated transverse myelitis possibly triggered by an initial neuroborreliosis as the cause of the relapses observed in our patient. We demonstrate the diagnostic steps and procedures which were important in the differential diagnosis of this unusual and challenging case

Model Reporting for Certifiable AI: A Proposal from Merging EU Regulation into AI Development

Despite large progress in Explainable and Safe AI, practitioners suffer from a lack of regulation and standards for AI safety. In this work we merge recent regulation efforts by the European Union and first proposals for AI guidelines with recent trends in research: data and model cards. We propose the use of standardized cards to document AI applications throughout the development process. Our main contribution is the introduction of use-case and operation cards, along with updates for data and model cards to cope with regulatory requirements. We reference both recent research as well as the source of the regulation in our cards and provide references to additional support material and toolboxes whenever possible. The goal is to design cards that help practitioners develop safe AI systems throughout the development process, while enabling efficient third-party auditing of AI applications, being easy to understand, and building trust in the system. Our work incorporates insights from interviews with certification experts as well as developers and individuals working with the developed AI applications.Comment: 54 pages, 1 figure, to be submitte

Case Report: A Case of Severe Clinical Deterioration in a Patient With Multiple Sclerosis

    Get PDF
Tumefactive multiple sclerosis (MS) is a rare variant of MS that may lead to a rapidly progressive clinical deterioration requiring a multidisciplinary diagnostic workup. Our report describes the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of a rare and extremely severe course of MS. A 51-year-old man with an 8-year history of relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) was admitted with a subacute progressive left lower limb weakness and deterioration of walking ability. After extensive investigations including repeated MRI, microbiological, serological, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies, and finally brain biopsy, the diagnosis of a tumefactive MS lesion was confirmed. Despite repeated intravenous (IV) steroids as well as plasma exchanges and IV foscarnet and ganciclovir owing to low copy numbers of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, the patient did not recover. The clinical presentation of tumefactive MS is rare and variable. Brain biopsy for histopathological workup should be considered in immunocompromised patients with rapidly progressive clinical deterioration with brain lesions of uncertain cause
