First Passage Time Densities in Non-Markovian Models with Subthreshold Oscillations
Motivated by the dynamics of resonant neurons we consider a differentiable,
non-Markovian random process and particularly the time after which it
will reach a certain level . The probability density of this first passage
time is expressed as infinite series of integrals over joint probability
densities of and its velocity . Approximating higher order terms
of this series through the lower order ones leads to closed expressions in the
cases of vanishing and moderate correlations between subsequent crossings of
. For a linear oscillator driven by white or coloured Gaussian noise,
which models a resonant neuron, we show that these approximations reproduce the
complex structures of the first passage time densities characteristic for the
underdamped dynamics, where Markovian approximations (giving monotonous first
passage time distribution) fail
Variation at the NFATC2 Locus Increases the Risk of Thiazolidinedione-Induced Edema in the Diabetes REduction Assessment with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medication (DREAM) Study
Objective: Thiazolidinediones are used to treat type 2 diabetes. Their use has been associated with peripheral edema and congestive heart failure - outcomes that may have a genetic etiology. Research Design and Methods: We genotyped 4,197 participants of the multiethnic DREAM (Diabetes Reduction Assessment with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medication) trial with a 50k single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) array, which captures ∼2000 cardiovascular, inflammatory, and metabolic genes. We tested 32,088 SNPs for an association with edema among Europeans who received rosiglitazone (n = 965). Results: One SNP, rs6123045, in NFATC2 was significantly associated with edema (odds ratio 1.89 [95% CI 1.47-2.42]; P = 5.32 × 10-7, corrected P = 0.017). Homozygous individuals had the highest edema rate (hazard ratio 2.89, P = 4.22 × 10-4) when compared with individuals homozygous for the protective allele, with heterozygous individuals having an intermediate risk. The interaction between the SNP and rosiglitazone for edema was significant (P = 7.68 × 10-3). Six SNPs in NFATC2 were significant in both Europeans and Latin Americans (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Genetic variation at the NFATC2 locus contributes to edema among individuals who receive rosiglitazone
The integrated academic information system support for education 3.0 in higher education institution: lecturer perspective
Education 3.0 has been implemented in many higher education institutions (HEIs). Education 3.0 has been directed the institution toward better educational experience. But on the other hands, the implementation of Education 3.0 also caused some problems. Previous research has found administrative problem experienced by the lecturer. This research explores deeper from the lecturer and suggested the solution from lecturer perspective, combined with information technology capabilities owned by the HEIs. The research used a case study as the method and conducted a qualitative research with a semi-structured interview. The interview analysis has found that the increase of the administrative processes is caused by online and offline administrative activities. The online activities are from e-learning and the offline activities are from traditional learning (face-to-face). The administrative processes also involved the academic information system (AIS). Simplified all of the administrative processes are more preferred. To overcome the problems, integrating the AIS and e-learning become necessary. This research suggests transforming the existing AIS into an integrated AIS and hopes the solution can simplify the administration process
Effective String Theory Revisited
We revisit the effective field theory of long relativistic strings such as
confining flux tubes in QCD. We derive the Polchinski-Strominger interaction by
a calculation in static gauge. This interaction implies that a non-critical
string which initially oscillates in one direction gets excited in orthogonal
directions as well. In static gauge no additional term in the effective action
is needed to obtain this effect. It results from a one-loop calculation using
the Nambu-Goto action. Non-linearly realized Lorentz symmetry is manifest at
all stages in dimensional regularization. We also explain that independent of
the number of dimensions non-covariant counterterms have to be added to the

Predictors of Development of Diabetes in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure in the Candesartan in Heart Failure Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and Morbidity (CHARM) Program
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of incident diabetes during follow-up of nondiabetic patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) in the Candesartan in Heart Failure Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and Morbidity (CHARM) program.<p></p>
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 1,620 nondiabetic patients had full baseline datasets. We compared baseline demographic, medication, and laboratory data for patients who did or did not develop diabetes and conducted logistic regression and receiver operator characteristic curve analyses.<p></p>
RESULTS: Over a median period of 2.8 years, 126 of the 1,620 patients (7.8%) developed diabetes. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the following baseline characteristics were independently associated with incident diabetes in decreasing order of significance by stepwise selection: higher A1C (odds ratio [OR] 1.78 per 1 SD increase; P < 0.0001), higher BMI (OR 1.64 per 1 SD increase; P < 0.0001), lipid-lowering therapy (OR 2.05; P = 0.0005), lower serum creatinine concentration (OR 0.68 per 1 SD increase; P = 0.0018), diuretic therapy (OR 4.81; P = 0.003), digoxin therapy (OR 1.65; P = 0.022), higher serum alanine aminotransferase concentration (OR 1.15 per 1 SD increase; P = 0.027), and lower age (OR 0.81 per 1 SD increase; P = 0.048). Using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, A1C and BMI yielded areas under the curve of 0.723 and 0.712, respectively, increasing to 0.788 when combined. Addition of other variables independently associated with diabetes risk minimally improved prediction of diabetes.<p></p>
CONCLUSIONS: In nondiabetic patients with CHF in CHARM, A1C and BMI were the strongest predictors of the development of diabetes. Other minor predictors in part reflected CHF severity or drug-associated diabetes risk. Identifying patients with CHF at risk of diabetes through simple criteria appears possible and could enable targeted preventative measures

Universal Statistical Behavior of Neural Spike Trains
We construct a model that predicts the statistical properties of spike trains
generated by a sensory neuron. The model describes the combined effects of the
neuron's intrinsic properties, the noise in the surrounding, and the external
driving stimulus. We show that the spike trains exhibit universal statistical
behavior over short times, modulated by a strongly stimulus-dependent behavior
over long times. These predictions are confirmed in experiments on H1, a

Increases in Waist Circumference and Weight As Predictors of Type 2 Diabetes in Individuals With Impaired Fasting Glucose: Influence of Baseline BMI: Data from the DESIR study
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate in impaired fasting glucose (IFG) the relative importance of increases in waist circumference and weight on progression to type 2 diabetes.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS
The 9-year incidence of diabetes was studied in 979 men and women with baseline IFG, from the Data from an Epidemiological Study on the Insulin Resistance Syndrome (DESIR) cohort.
RESULTS
Increases in both waist circumference and weight were significantly associated with diabetes incidence. Standardized odds ratios (95% CI) were 1.79 (1.45–2.21) and 1.86 (1.51–2.30), respectively, after controlling for baseline risk factors. The impact of waist circumference increase was greater for BMI <25 kg/m2 (2.40 [1.63–3.52]) than for BMI ≥25 kg/m2 (1.66 [1.28–2.16]) and persisted after adjusting for concurrent changes in either insulinemia or the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index. Weight change had a similar impact in both BMI groups.
CONCLUSIONS
In individuals with IFG, it is important to monitor and prevent increases in waist circumference, in particular for those with BMI <25 kg/m2
