The plastic sector sustains an important growth based on production worldwide and nationally during the last years. However, this growth in production can be affected by the various problems that the sector sustains, harming the availability of plastic products and thereby affecting customers, this impact is reflected in customer losses due to the non-fulfillment of orders or additional payments for penalties imposed by them. In this context, companies in the plastic sector aim to reduce machine downtime rates to increase availability and thereby maintain smooth production and thus increase the order fulfillment rate. After the above, in the research, the problem that generates a low rate of order fulfillment is due to the constant blowing machine shutdowns in the plant. Therefore, it is proposed to design a model based on the Lean Manufacturing philosophy, using tools such as 5S, SW, TPM and SMED, based on applications of the Lean Green philosophy; with the aim of reducing stops in the blowing machine making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. This research emphasizes the most representative product of the company, the drums, developing the diagnosis in the blowing process, which, the root causes were quantified with respect to the main problem, through the tools of the Lean Manufacturing philosophy it is proposed to address each cause and mitigate them. Finally, the model that has been proposed manages to reduce the rate of machine shutdowns by 55.48%, giving greater availability to the blowing machine and with it a better production flow, which generates an increase in the order fulfillment rate by 74.59%. In this way, a precedent is achieved in the plastic sector regarding the improvement of blowing processes

High Level Swimming Performance and its Relation to Non-Specific Parameters: A Cross-Sectional Study on Maximum Handgrip Isometric Strength

    Get PDF
The relationship between handgrip isometric strength and swimming performance was assessed in the four competitive swimming strokes in swimmers of different age groups and of both sexes. 78 national-level Portuguese swimmers (39 males, 39 females) were selected for this study. Grip strength, previously used as a marker of overall strength to predict future swimming performance, was measured using a hand dynamometer. The best competitive time at 100 and 200 m in all four swimming strokes were converted into 2010 FINA points. Non-parametric tests were used to evaluate differences between groups. Pearson product-moment correlations were computed to verify the association between variables. Handgrip maximum isometric strength was significantly correlated with swimming performance, particularly among female swimmers. Among female age group swimmers, the relationship between handgrip and 100-m freestyle was significant. Handgrip isometric strength seems to be related to swimming performance, especially to 100-m freestyle and in female swimmers. For all other distances and strokes, technique and training probably are more influential than semi-hereditary strength markers such as grip strength.UBI/FCSH/Santander/2010–2012info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Does the Baroudi-Ferreira technique reduce seroma after abdominoplasty?

    Get PDF
Introduction: Abdominoplasty has evolved over the years with improvement of techniques that initially had high complication rates. However, even with the evolution of operative techniques, seroma remains the most frequent early complication of this procedure. This study aims to compare the development of seroma after abdominoplasty with and without the use of quilting sutures. Methods: Twenty patients undergoing abdominoplasty were evaluated and divided into two groups: Group A (abdominoplasty using quilting sutures - Baroudi-Ferreira technique) and Group B (abdominoplasty without the use of quilting sutures). Results: Two patients in Group A (20%) had seroma, which was significantly lower (p = 0.05) than that in Group B, in which seven patients were diagnosed with seroma (70%). The mean volume observed in Group A was 26.5 mL, whereas in Group B, it was 146.5 mL. The highest volume aspirated in Group A was 130 mL, on the 15th postoperative day (POD), whereas in Group B it was 230 mL, on the 21st POD. Conclusion: In this study, the development of seroma in abdominoplasty was significantly lower in the group in which the Baroudi-Ferreira technique was used

Hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives as dual-target ligands: mitochondriotropic antioxidants and cholinesterase inhibitors

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial age-related disease associated with oxidative stress (OS) and impaired cholinergic transmission. Accordingly, targeting mitochondrial OS and restoring cholinergic transmission can be an effective therapeutic strategy toward AD. Herein, we report for the first time dual-target hydroxybenzoic acid (HBAc) derivatives acting as mitochondriotropic antioxidants and cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors. The studies were performed with two mitochondriotropic antioxidants AntiOxBEN1 (catechol derivative), and AntiOxBEN2 (pyrogallol derivative) and compounds 15–18, which have longer spacers. Compounds AntiOxBEN1 and 15, with a shorter carbon chain spacer (six- and eight-carbon) were shown to be potent antioxidants and BChE inhibitors (IC50 = 85 ± 5 and 106 ± 5 nM, respectively), while compounds 17 and 18 with a 10-carbon chain were more effective AChE inhibitors (IC50 = 7.7 ± 0.4 and 7.2 ± 0.5 μM, respectively). Interestingly, molecular modeling data pointed toward bifunctional ChEs inhibitors. The most promising ChE inhibitors acted by a non-competitive mechanism. In general, with exception of compounds 15 and 17, no cytotoxic effects were observed in differentiated human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) and human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells, while Aβ-induced cytotoxicity was significantly prevented by the new dual-target HBAc derivatives. Overall, due to its BChE selectivity, favorable toxicological profile, neuroprotective activity and drug-like properties, which suggested blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, the mitochondriotropic antioxidant AntiOxBEN1 is considered a valid lead candidate for the development of dual acting drugs for AD and other mitochondrial OS-related diseases. This work was funded by FEDER funds through the Operational Programme Competitiveness Factors-COMPETE and national funds by FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology under research grants (QUI/UI0081/2013, NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000028 and PTDC/DTP-FTO/2433/2014, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016659, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007440.
Abstract

Background

The association between physical activity and quality of life in stroke survivors has not been analyzed within a framework related to the human development index. This study aimed to identify differences in physical activity level and in the quality of life of stroke survivors in two cities differing in economic aspects of the human development index.

Methods

Two groups of subjects who had suffered a stroke at least a year prior to testing and showed hemiplegia or hemiparesis were studied: a group from Belo Horizonte (BH) with 48 people (51.5 ± 8.7 years) and one from Montes Claros (MC) with 29 subjects (55.4 ± 8.1 years). Subsequently, regardless of location, the groups were divided into Active and Insufficiently Active so their difference in terms of quality of life could be analyzed.

Results

There were no significant differences between BH and MCG when it came to four dimensions of physical health that were evaluated (physical functioning, physical aspect, pain and health status) or in the following four dimensions of mental health status (vitality, social aspect, emotional aspect and mental health). However, significantly higher mean values were found in Active when compared with Insufficiently Active individuals in various measures of physical health (physical functioning 56.2 ± 4.4 vs. 47.4 ± 6.9; physical aspect 66.5 ± 6.5 vs. 59.1 ± 6.7; pain 55.9 ± 6.2 vs. 47.7 ± 6.0; health status 67.2 ± 4.2 vs. 56.6 ± 7.8) (arbitrary units), and mental health (vitality 60.9 ± 6.8 vs. 54.1 ± 7.2; social aspect 60.4 ± 7.1 vs. 54.2 ± 7.4; emotional aspect 64.0 ± 5.5 vs. 58.1 ± 6.9; mental health status 66.2 ± 5.5 vs. 58.4 ± 7.5) (arbitrary units).

Conclusions

Despite the difference between the cities concerning HDI values, no significant differences in quality of life were found between BH and MCG. However, the Active group showed significantly better results, confirming the importance of active lifestyle to enhance quality of life in stroke survivors.</p

Funding Information: This research was partially co-financed by Hospital da Luz Lisboa under the initiative “Luz Investigação” in the context of the Group GENIUS (Reference LH.INV.F2019015).We investigated the impactof microsatellite instability (MSI) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) status in gastric cancer (GC), regarding response to perioperative chemotherapy (POPChT), overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS). We included 137 cases of operated GC, 51 of which were submitted to POPChT. MSI status was determined by multiplex PCR and EBV status by EBV-encoded RNA in situ hybridization. Thirty-seven (27%) cases presented as MSI-high, and seven (5.1%) were EBV+. Concerning tumor regression after POPChT, no differences were observed between the molecular subtypes, but females were more likely to respond (p = 0.062). No significant differences were found in OS or PFS between different subtypes. In multivariate analysis, age (HR 1.02, IC 95% 1.002–1.056, p = 0.033) and positive lymph nodes (HR 1.82, IC 95% 1.034–3.211, p = 0.038) were the only prognostic factors for OS. However, females with MSI-high tumors treated with POPChT demonstrated a significantly increased OS compared to females with MSS tumors (p = 0.031). In conclusion, we found a high proportion of MSI-high cases. MSI and EBV status did not influence OS or PFS either in patients submitted to POPChT or surgery alone. However, superior survival of females with MSI-high tumors suggests that sex disparities and molecular classification may influence treatment options in GC.publishersversionpublishe

Effect of the harvest season on phenolic composition and oenological parameters of grapes and wines cv. Touriga Nacional (Vitis vinifera L.) produced under tropical semi-arid climate, in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil

The northeastern region of São Francisco Valley is the third largest wine producer in Brazil, differentiated by the production of at least two harvests per year, generally in the first and second semesters, respectively. The productive cycle of the vine in the first semester is higher than in the second semester, mainly due to differences in temperature, with maximum and average temperatures of approximately 30 ºC and 26 ºC, respectively. Second semester is characterized by higher temperatures (summer season) and that promote a rapid maturation of the grapes. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phenolic composition, other oenological parameters and the sensorial profile of grapes and wines of cv. 'Touriga Nacional' (Vitis vinifera L.), characterizing grapes and wines from four harvest seasons, two of them referring to the first half of the year and two referring to the second half of the year, using a broad analytical approach. The experimental design consisted of three randomized blocks, with sixty plants marked in different lines and positions (twenty plants in each block at the beginning, middle and end of the vineyard). The results showed that there was a harvesting effect for some of the grape chemical compounds (monomeric anthocyanins, organic acids, condensed tannins and monomeric flavanols, for example) as well as in wines (calcium, monomeric anthocyanins, condensed tannins and monomeric flavanols). Regarding the sensorial profile of the wines, it was possible to observe that higher scores were attributed to floral aroma in wines from the first harvest (first half of the year). Fruity, spice and empyreumatic aromas were higher in wines from second harvest season (second half of the year). For other attributes, there was a tendency for higher variations between the period of study (2014 – 2017) than between the harvest seasonsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
