Towards a collocation writing assistant for learners of Spanish

This paper describes the process followed in creating a tool aimed at helping learners produce collocations in Spanish. First we present the Diccionario de colocaciones del español (DiCE), an online collocation dictionary, which represents the first stage of this process. The following section focuses on the potential user of a collocation learning tool: we examine the usability problems DiCE presents in this respect, and explore the actual learner needs through a learner corpus study of collocation errors. Next, we review how collocation production problems of English language learners can be solved using a variety of electronic tools devised for that language. Finally, taking all the above into account, we present a new tool aimed at assisting learners of Spanish in writing texts, with particular attention being paid to the use of collocations in this language

Los corpus diacrónicos como instrumento para el estudio del origen y distribución de la concordancia de objeto en español

Partimos de una investigación previa sobre la génesis y el desarrollo histórico de la concordancia de objeto en español que pone de relieve las ventajas de un enfoque basado en corpus frente a otras alternativas de análisis. Teniendo en cuenta los corpus diacrónicos de que dispone el español, discutiremos hasta qué punto resulta factible recuperar los datos precisos para un estudio de estas características y qué tipo de información (etiquetado, analizado, etc.) sería necesaria para facilitar tal tarea. Finalmente, se verá en qué medida se manifiesta la preferencia de ciertas funciones sintácticas por una codificación y un estatus informativo determinados en el corpus seleccionado y se planteará si los géneros discursivos documentados a lo largo de la historia del español son representativos en igual medida de dicha preferencia.The article is based on previous research on the genesis and diffusion of object agreement in Spanish, which highlights the advantages of a corpus-driven approach as contrasted with other lines of analysis. We take into account the Spanish historical corpora available and discuss the feasibility of retrieving the necessary data for this type of study. Furthermore, we put forward some proposals about what kind of information (tagging, parsing, etc.) could make the task easier. Lastly, in the light of corpus data, we can see to what extent certain syntactic functions favour particular coding devices and information status, and consider if the various discourse genres registered in the history of the Spanish language are equally representative of these preferences

Sectoral mark-up dynamics in Spain

In this paper we show that value-added mark-ups tend to be pro-cyclical in manufacturing and counter-cyclical in market services. However, at the sectoral level value-added mark-ups may be misinterpreted if intermediate input variations are ignored. This is particularly true in the case of the manufacturing sectors, although less so in that of market services. In fact, this is the main explanation for the (pro-cyclical) behaviour of relative services-manufacturing mark-ups which, in turn, play an important role in their relative price dynamics of these sectors. In addition, fluctuations in demand also play a role. In the case of services, mark-ups depend negatively on current output and positively on future outputhence in periods when demand is recovering (declining) mark-ups widen (narrow). By contrast, in the manufacturing sectors mark-ups depend positively on the current output gap and negatively on future expected demand, i.e. when demand is recovering (declining) current mark-ups fall (rise).[resumen de autor

Accounting for Spanish productivity growth using sectoral data : new evidence

En este trabajo se analizan las fuentes del crecimiento de la productividad en España, a nivel sectorial y diferenciando el papel desempeñado por la productividad del trabajo, el grado de sustitucion entre factores y su productividad total (residuo de Solow). En terminos de valor añadido, el crecimiento de la productividad total de los factores en las manufacturas es mayor que en los servicios (2,4% y 1,1%, respectivamente), aunque la rama de comunicaciones constituye una excepcion. En terminos de produccion, el crecimiento de la productividad en ambas ramas es practicamente el mismo (0,6% y 0,7%, respectivamente), debido al reducido peso que tienen los consumos intermedios en la produccion de servicios. Pronombres y afijos personales. Estudio con datos de español conversacional

En español es posible y hasta común que el sujeto no se exprese mediante un constituyente clausular ya que, en ocasiones, la información que aportan las desinencias de número-persona de una forma verbal finita es suficiente para que el destinatario identifique la referencia del sujeto en cuestión. Sin embargo, en ciertos contextos se presentan constituyentes sintácticos que transmiten contenidos muy similares a los de los afijos verbales de número-persona: pronombres personales en función de sujeto. Estos dos hechos —que, por un lado, un constituyente sintáctico explícito, sea innecesario para que las cláusulas de esta lengua sean gramaticales y, por otro, que el contenido de los pronombres personales en función de sujeto coincida en gran parte con los expresados por las desinencias de las formas verbales finitas— supone uno de los problemas clásicos de los estudios lingüísticos del español —se trata ya en la primera edición de la GRAE (1771: 237, 249-250)—. Ante tal problema podrían plantearse al menos dos soluciones: (i) o bien los pronombres personales en función de sujeto son elementos redundantes, o bien (ii) los hablantes los usan para transmitir algo a su destinatario. Because I'm Happy: Exploring the Happiness of Shopping in Social Enterprises and its Effect on Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty

[Abstract] Purpose: This research analyzes the role of happiness associated with sustainable purchases in social enterprises (SEs) as a key precursor of prosocial behavioral responses through satisfaction with such purchases. Design/methodology/approach: This paper studies the relationships between past purchase in a social enterprise, consumer happiness, satisfaction and three indicators of loyalty: repurchase intention, word-of-mouth (WOM) intention and willingness to pay more. In addition, it analyzes the moderating role of altruistic motivation. A survey was designed to collect data from 380 consumers who had bought in a social enterprise. Findings: Sustainable consumption is a source of happiness for ethical consumers to the extent that they feel that they meet a personal need or desire, and they contribute to achieving a social objective with their purchasing behavior. Practical implication: SEs must appeal to the happiness of consumers as a strategic line to achieve their satisfaction and loyalty. Social enterprise practitioners and marketers should deploy organizational capabilities and resources in key performing areas such as communication, customer service or shopping experience, with the purpose of maximizing the happiness of ethical consumers with whom the firm is interacting for the first time. Originality/value: This research highlights the importance of the social enterprise in the commercial setting, since it has been proven that purchases in these companies generate happiness and satisfaction in consumers. Connecting Social Enterprises and Sustainable Consumption: Systematic Review, Bibliometric Analysis, and Conceptual Framework

[Abstract]: The purpose of this study is to explore the meeting point between social enterprises (SEs) and sustainable consumption, given the proven potential of these hybrid organizations in the achievement of sustainable development. Paradoxically, scholarly attention has been scarce to this field of research, particularly from the perspectives of SE products and (potential) customers. Aiming to shed some light, a systematic literature review was conducted, resulting in 24 scientific publications descriptively and thematically explored based on a bibliometric analysis. The findings show that the link between SEs and sustainable consumption is very recent and that empirical articles using quantitative methodologies prevail focused on the analysis of capabilities and performances of SEs aiming to positively influence customers’ response. Nevertheless, the attention to the identification of product attributes and the individual determinants effective enough to press the buy button is still limited. Algunos datos nuevos sobre las relaciones Iglesia-Estado durante la Segunda República Española. Documentación inédita del Nuncio Tedeschini en el Archivo Secreto Vaticano

Se pretende mostrar la importancia que para el estudio y la investigación de las relaciones entre la Iglesia católica y la Segunda República tendrán los fondos puestos a consulta recientemente en el Archivo Secreto Vaticano. Se han seleccionado dos momentos de especial trascendencia. En primer lugar, la proclamación de la Segunda República. Los telegramas cifrados cruzados ente la Secretaría de Estado y Tedeschini, aportan datos no conocidos y de bastante relieve. En segundo lugar la aprobación por las Cortes, del que habría de ser el artículo 26 de la Constitución de 1931. En un extenso informe (que se transcribe íntegramente) el Nuncio Tedeschini relata cómo fueron los acontecimientos. Los testimonios históricos sobre la existencia (Alcalá-Zamora) o no (Azaña) de un acuerdo entre el Gobierno provisional y la jerarquía eclesiástica, eran contradictorios. Este nuevo testimonio corrobora su existencia: el Nuncio no duda en hablar de traición, refiriéndose en especial a Azaña. ------ It aims to show the importance of the collections recently available in the Vatican Secret Archive for the study and investigation of the relations between the Catholic Church and the Second Republic. Two moments of special transcendence have been selected. First is the proclamation of the Second Republic. The encoded telegrams exchanged between tge Secretary of State and Tedeschini offer unknown data of quite relevance. Second is the approval by the 'Cortes', of which the article 26 of the Constitution of 1931 would have been. In an extensive report (which is transcribed completely), Nuncio Tedeschini relates how the events were. The historical testimonies about the existence (Alcalá-Zamora) or non-existence (Azaña) of an agreement between the provisional government and the ecclesiastical hierarchy were contradictories. This new testimony corroborates its existence: the Nuncio does not doubt in speaking about betrayal, specially referring to Azaña
