Improving the family orientation process in Cuban Special Schools trough Nearest Prototype classification

    Get PDF
Cuban Schools for children with Affective – Behavioral Maladies (SABM) have as goal to accomplish a major change in children behavior, to insert them effectively into society. One of the key elements in this objective is to give an adequate orientation to the children’s families; due to the family is one of the most important educational contexts in which the children will develop their personality. The family orientation process in SABM involves clustering and classification of mixed type data with non-symmetric similarity functions. To improve this process, this paper includes some novel characteristics in clustering and prototype selection. The proposed approach uses a hierarchical clustering based on compact sets, making it suitable for dealing with non-symmetric similarity functions, as well as with mixed and incomplete data. The proposal obtains very good results on the SABM data, and over repository databases

IFMIF suitability for evaluation of fusion functional materials

    Get PDF
The International FusionMaterials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is a future neutron source based on the D-Li stripping reaction, planned to test candidate fusionmaterials at relevant fusion irradiation conditions. During the design of IFMIF special attention was paid to the structural materials for the blanket and first wall, because they will be exposed to the most severe irradiation conditions in a fusion reactor. Also the irradiation of candidate materials for solid breeder blankets is planned in the IFMIF reference design. This paper focuses on the assessment of the suitability of IFMIF irradiation conditions for testing functionalmaterials to be used in liquid blankets and diagnostics systems, since they are been also considered within IFMIF objectives. The study has been based on the analysis and comparison of the main expected irradiation parameters in IFMIF and DEMO reactor

Cosmological perturbations from varying masses and couplings

We study the evolution of perturbations during the domination and decay of a massive particle species whose mass and decay rate are allowed to depend on the expectation value of a light scalar field. We specialize in the case where the light field is slow-rolling, showing that during a phase of inhomogeneous mass-domination and decay the isocurvature perturbation of the light field is converted into a curvature perturbation with an efficiency which is nine times larger than when the mass is fixed. We derive a condition on the annihilation cross section and on the decay rate for the domination of the massive particles and we show that standard model particles cannot dominate the universe before nucleosynthesis. We also compare this mechanism with the curvaton model. Finally, observational signatures are discussed. A cold dark matter isocurvature mode can be generated if the dark matter is produced out of equilibrium by both the inflaton and the massive particle species decay. Non-Gaussianities are present: they are chi-square deviations. However, they might be too small to be observable.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, published versio

Advances on the automatic estimation of the P-wave onset time.

This work describes the automatic picking of the P-phase arrivals of the 3*10^6 seismic registers originated during the TOMO-ETNA experiment. Air-gun shots produced by the vessel “Sarmiento de Gamboa” and contemporary passive seismicity occurring in the island are recorded by a dense network of stations deployed for the experiment. In such scenario, automatic processing is needed given: (i) the enormous amount of data, (ii) the low signal-to-noise ratio of many of the available registers and, (iii) the accuracy needed for the velocity tomography resulting from the experiment. A preliminary processing is performed with the records obtained from all stations. Raw data formats from the different types of stations are unified, eliminating defective records and reducing noise through filtering in the band of interest for the phase picking. The advanced multiband picking algorithm (AMPA) is then used to process the big database obtained and determine the travel times of the seismic phases. The approach of AMPA, based on frequency multiband denoising and enhancement of expected arrivals through optimum detectors, is detailed together with its calibration and quality assessment procedure. Examples of its usage for active and passive seismic events are presented.PublishedS04342V. Dinamiche di unrest e scenari pre-eruttiviJCR Journalope

Flexible workflows for on-the-fly electronmicroscopy single-particle image processing using Scipion

Electron microscopy of macromolecular structures is an approach that is in increasing demand in the field of structural biology. The automation of image acquisition has greatly increased the potential throughput of electron microscopy. Here, the focus is on the possibilities in Scipion to implement flexible and robust image-processing workflows that allow the electron-microscope operator and the user to monitor the quality of image acquisition, assessing very simple acquisition measures or obtaining a first estimate of the initial volume, or the data resolution and heterogeneity, without any need for programming skills. These workflows can implement intelligent automatic decisions and they can warn the user of possible acquisition failures. These concepts are illustrated by analysis of the well known 2.2 Å resolution β-galactosidase data setThe authors would like to acknowledge financial support from The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the BIO2016-76400-R (AEI/FEDER, UE) grant, the Comunidad Auto´noma de Madrid through grant S2017/BMD3817, the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PT17/0009/0010), the European Union (EU) and Horizon 2020 through the CORBEL grant (INFRADEV-1-2014-1, Proposal 654248), the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation (ID 100010434, Fellow LCF/BQ/ IN18/11660021), Elixir–EXCELERATE (INFRADEV-3- 2015, Proposal 676559), iNEXT (INFRAIA-1-2014-2015, Proposal 653706), EOSCpilot (INFRADEV-04-2016, Proposal 739563) and INSTRUCT–ULTRA (INFRADEV03-2016-2017, Proposal 731005

To advance the institutionalization of service-learning (SL) in Catholic universities, the launch of the UNISERVITATE program was carried out in 2020. The objective of this article is to describe how a participatory process for diagnosing the institutionalization of SL is approached from the Furco rubric at St. Mary’s university, Universidade Católica de Portugal and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. This process has been led by the region's hub, the University of Deusto. To this end, an evaluation of the degree of institutionalization of the SL has been carried out through a tool that identifies where the universities are in the institutionalization process. As a result, the tool, the strengths and weaknesses identified in the institutions, and the action plans derived from them are presented. Finally, the need to undertake research on what the institutionalization of SL implies in Catholic higher education institutions is highlighted, as well as the importance of promoting said process to promote the integral human development of students in higher education.Para avanzar en la institucionalización del aprendizaje-servicio (ApS) en las universidades católicas, en 2020 se llevó a cabo el lanzamiento del programa UNISERVITATE. Veganism and animal welfare, scientific, ethical, and philosophical arguments

    Get PDF
Published Online: May 1, 2023The justification for this review article is to understand the position of vegans and those individuals who consume food of animal origin from an unbiased perspective but with a grounding in scientific evidence. This will provide people who eat meat with scientific and ethical arguments to defend their alimentary autonomy in the context of the moral conflict that has emerged in societies regarding the consumption of meat and animal products, which is criticized –sometimes even attacked– by activists, ovolactovegetarians, or vegetarians with alimentary habits that stress ethical and moral respect for animals. These individuals refuse to eat meat and animal products but sometimes show disrespect for those who do. In recent decades, veganism and vegetarianism have reached an apogee in some western societies where they are often considered a healthy option for humans that simultaneously fosters animal and environmental welfare. While those diets may provide numerous benefits, they can also entail health risks by failing to provide balance and necessary dietary supplements. Various researchers concur that they are not appropriate for pregnant women, children, or carnivorous or omnivorous pets. Our review of scientific articles in favor and against dietary regimens that lack protein of animal origin leads to the conclusion that these dietary changes, on their own, do not reduce animal suffering or the contamination generated by the meat, dairy, and poultry industries. Finally, it is important to consider that, despite the popular opinion that vegetarianism and veganism are healthy diet alternatives, the diet must be individualized and well-balanced according to each stage of their life cycle.Daniel Mota-Rojas, Alexandra L.
