    Staurosira magallanesica, a replacement name for Staurosira patagonica

    Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales described a new species found in material of Maar Magallanes, Patagonia, Argentina and other lakes in southern Patagonia. This new species was analysed in detail by light and electron microscopy and a comprehensive description is given in Garcia et al. (2017: 107, 114, figs 2-45). However, this name is a later homonym of Staurosira patagonica Cleve, 1882. If we compare our species to Cleve’s illustration (Cleve 1882: pl. 16: fig. 13), we can easily differentiate the two by their general valve outline and morphometric data. As pointed out by Garcia et al. (2017), re-examination of the type material of members of the Fragilariaceae is needed to confirm identities, establish taxonomic boundaries and to facilitate identification, and this is also the case with Staurosira patagonica Cleve. A new name is, however, required for Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales as it is an illegitimate name: Staurosira magallanesica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales nom. nov.     Defragmenting public space : a guide for policymakers

    While social inequalities remain key features of numerous cities globally, many still manage to provide spaces for collective social life, including public streets, market spaces and parks. Yet many countries today, with growing and significant socio-economic disparities and a rising fear of crime and violence, now see a range of strategies by their wealthiest citizens to avoid public spaces. This avoidance has generated a more fragmented engagement with the city by particular social groups. These processes, including the avoidance of public spaces and normalisation of gated communities, are reshaping cities leaving fewer shared spaces for collective life as public spaces are privatised. This report comes from a dialogue between researchers with interests in the risks and challenges for the public life of cities and these new and growing patterns of segregation and social avoidance. The collaboration between scholars and institutions seeks to understand the increasingly defensive quality of many urban centres and to identify forms of policy, practice and urban interventions capable of ensuring public safety and participation by all citizens. The purpose of this report is to engage researchers and practitioners in the discussion about the risks and challenges associated with urban fragmentation strategies and the means by which safer, more inclusive and liveable public spaces might be achieved

    El presente trabajo expone el proceso de las prácticas exitosas de la gestión directiva en el Jardín de Niños Moctezuma en seis ciclos escolares (2009-2015). Estas prácticas implicaron el compromiso de la educadora encargada del proyecto, de los docentes y de la comunidad escolar y con ellas se orientó a la escuela para que se constituyera en una comunidad de aprendizaje. Las prácticas exitosas se vincularon con la resolución de problemas y se enfocaron en reconocer las situaciones que requerían ser modificadas. Esto implicó un proceso de toma de decisiones para desarrollar la mejor alternativa de resolución a estos problemas y generar aprendizajes de calidad para todos

    Status and preliminary results of the ANAIS experiment at Canfranc

    ANAIS (Annual Modulation with NaI's) is an experiment planned to investigate seasonal modulation effects in the signal of galactic WIMPs using up to 107 kg of NaI(Tl) in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Spain).     Present status of IGEX dark matter search at Canfranc Underground Laboratory

    One IGEX 76Ge double-beta decay detector is currently operating in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in a search for dark matter WIMPs, through the Ge nuclear recoil produced by the WIMP elastic scattering. A new exclusion plot has been derived for WIMP-nucleon spin-independent interactions. To obtain this result, 40 days of data from the IGEX detector (energy threshold 4 keV), recently collected, have been analyzed. These data improve the exclusion limits derived from all the other ionization germanium detectors in the mass region from 20 GeV to 200 GeV, where a WIMP supposedly responsible for the annual modulation effect reported by the DAMA experiment would be located. The new IGEX exclusion contour enters, by the first time, the DAMA region by using only raw data, with no background discrimination, and excludes its upper left part.     Controlled Rate Thermal Analysis (CRTA) as New Method to Control the Specific Surface in Hydroxyapatite Thin Coatings

    The control of the texture in synthetic hydroxyapatite ceramics had limited their application in the field of the materials for bone implantation, even more when it is used as a filling in cements and other formulations in orthopedic surgery. The present article shows preliminary results demonstrating the effectiveness of a modification of the controlled rate thermal analysis (CRTA), developed by J. Rouquerol, used for the preparation of ceramic materials with controlled textural characteristics, during the formation of ceramic powders of synthetic hydroxyapatite at low temperatures. The thermal treatments of the hydroxyapatite were carried out in a device connected to a computer, to control temperature and pressure system, keeping the decomposition speed constant. Results, reported when preparing ceramic powders of hydroxyapatite at 300 and 850°C under controlled pressure, using synthetic hydroxyapatite with a Ca/P molar ratio equal to 1.64, were checked using IR spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction, showed that the formed phase corresponds to that of crystalline hydroxyapatite, even at 300°C of maximum temperature. Values of specific surface (BET) between 17 and 66 m2/g, with pore size in the range of 50–300 Å in both cases are obtained by N2 absorption isotherms, when analyzing the isotherms of nitrogen absorption
