La Ferrassie 1: New perspectives on a "classic" Neandertal.
The La Ferrassie 1 (LF1) skeleton, discovered over a century ago, is one of the most important Neandertal individuals both for its completeness and due to the role it has played historically in the interpretation of Neandertal anatomy and lifeways. Here we present new skeletal remains from this individual, which include a complete right middle ear ossicular chain (malleus, incus, and stapes), three vertebral fragments, and two costal remains. Additionally, the study of the skeleton has allowed us to identify new pathological lesions, including a congenital variant in the atlas, a greenstick fracture of the left clavicle, and a lesion in a mid-thoracic rib of unknown etiology. In addition, we have quantified the amount of vertebral pathology, which is greater than previously appreciated. We have complemented the paleopathological analysis with a taphonomic analysis to identify any potential perimortem fractures. The taphonomic analysis indicates that no surface alteration is present in the LF1 skeleton and that the breakage pattern is that of bone that has lost collagen, which would be consistent with the intentional burial of this individual proposed by previous researchers. In this study, we used CT and microCT scans in order to discover new skeletal elements to better characterize the pathological lesions and to quantify the fracture orientation of those bones in which the current plaster reconstruction did not allow its direct visualization, which underlines the broad potential of imaging technologies in paleoanthropological research. A century after its discovery, LF1 is still providing new insights into Neandertal anatomy and behavior
Supply Chain Management Strategies in Terms of Decoupling Points and Decoupling Zones
Part 2: Knowledge Discovery and SharingInternational audienceSupply chain management is concerned with decisions related to the physical perspective of the enterprise and how the flow of goods and services is arranged. A wide set of strategies have evolved over time to provide guidelines for the decision makers but many of these strategies share a common foundation in process management that is based on decoupling points and decoupling zones. The strategies concerned here are segmentation, leagility, customization, postponement, servitization, sustainability, outsourcing, and visibility
Postponement Revisited – A Typology for Displacement
Part 3: Production Management Theory and MethodologyInternational audienceSince its introduction, postponement as a supply chain strategy has received a lot of attention in the operations management and the supply chain management literature. Nevertheless, there are still mixed answers about the meaning of postponement and as such, about its operational benefits. For instance, while some scholars argue that postponement results in a shorter delivery lead time, others claim the contrary. To reconcile these apparently conflicting findings, the purpose of this study is to establish a typology that highlights the three key properties of displacement, which is a collective term for preponement and postponement. By breaking down postponement into the three dimensions of form, place, and time, as well as introducing its antithesis preponement, a typology for displacement is presented and illustrated using a well-known postponement case
Antecedents and Consequences of Electronic Product Code Adoption and its Implications for Supply Chain Management: A Framework and Propositions for Future Research
Although electronic product code (ePC) is a popular standard of inter-organisational communication for identifying and tracing trade items, its level of adoption varies among firms, many of which still confine their supply chain activities to manual processes and stand-alone operations. To provide a better understanding of ePC adoption, we surveyed the relevant literature and developed a theoretical framework, together with a set of research propositions, to account for the antecedents and consequences of ePC adoption for supply chain management (SCM). The framework and propositions provide the impetus for a research agenda that identifies the critical issues of technological adoption for SCM. We also discuss the implications of the theoretical framework for further research and provide recommendations on the adoption of ePC for SCM.
