    Gold recycling at laboratory scale: from nanowaste to nanospheres

    The market for products based on nanotechnology, and with it the use of nanomaterials and the generation of nanowaste, increases day by day. Among the vast variety of nanomaterials available, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are among the most studied and applied in commercial products. This current situation requires both the development of recovery methods to reduce the amount of nanowaste produced, and new synthetic methods that allow the reuse of recovered gold for new nanomaterial production, keeping in mind both economical and ecological considerations. In this work, a methodology to recover gold from aqueous laboratory nanowaste and transform it into an aqueous HAuCl4 solution was developed, using extremely simple procedures and readily available chemical reagents (NaCl, HCl, H2O2) and allowing the recovery of more than 99 % of the original gold. The experiments were performed by using both simulated and real laboratory nanowastes, and practically the same results were obtained. Moreover, the subsequent use of the obtained aqueous HAuCl4 solution from the recovered gold to produce spherical AuNPs through a seed-mediated approach was demonstrated. Thus, this work presents for the first time a complete recycling cycle from nanowaste to the reagent and back to the nanomaterial.Fil: Oestreicher, Víctor Santiago Jesús.     Effectiveness of a brief psychological mindfulness-based intervention for the treatment of depression in primary care: Study protocol for a randomized controlled clinical trial

    Background: Depressive symptoms are quite prevalent in Primary Care (PC) settings. The treatment as usual (TAU) in PC is pharmacotherapy, despite the high relapse rates it produces. Many patients would prefer psychotherapy, but specialized services are overloaded. Studies that apply Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) for the treatment of depression have obtained significant improvements. Brief low-intensity approaches delivered from PC could be a promising approach. This study aims to compare a low-intensity mindfulness intervention for the treatment of depression in PC using different intervention formats - a face-to-face MBI delivered in a group and the same MBI individually applied on the Internet - to a control group that will receive PC medical treatment as usual. Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted in PC, with about 120 depressed patients allocated (1:1:1) to three groups: "face-to-face MBI + TAU", "Internet-delivered MBI + TAU", and "TAU alone". The MBI programs will be composed of four modules. The primary outcome will be depressive symptoms, measured through the Beck Depression Inventory, assessed at pre- and post-treatment and 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Other outcomes will be mindfulness, happiness, affectivity, quality of life, and the use of healthcare services. Intention-to-treat analysis using linear mixed models adjusted for baseline scores and routine sociodemographic analysis that could show baseline differences will be conducted. Per-protocol secondary outcome analyses will also be performed. Discussion: This is the first Spanish RCT to apply a low-intensity face-to-face MBI (plus TAU) to treat depression in PC settings compared to TAU (alone). Moreover, this study will also make it possible to evaluate the same MBI program (plus TAU), but Internet-delivered, considering their cost-effectiveness. Positive results from this RCT might have an important impact on mental health settings, helping to decrease the overload of the system and offering treatment alternatives beyond antidepressant medication through high-quality, flexible PC interventions

    Feasibility and effectiveness of a workplace-adapted mindfulness-based programme to reduce stress in workers at a private sector logistics company: An exploratory mixed methods study

    There is a high prevalence of stress in the logistics sector owing to very demanding, fast-paced and unpredictable tasks. Mindfulness-based programmes may reduce stress but require considerable practice. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a shortened, workplace-adapted mindfulness-based programme for the logistics sector (WA-MBP-LS) for the purpose of reducing stress. A nonblinded, nonrandomised, two-arm controlled trial was conducted. The WA-MBP-LS (n = 32) consisted of six weekly 90-min mindfulness sessions. The control group (n = 36) attended a psycho-educational seminar. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Five Facets of Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) were measured at pretest, posttest and 6-month follow-up. Differences between groups were evaluated using mixed-effects models. Qualitative methods were used to analyse implementation issues. A 64.2% reduction was observed between initial volunteers and actual participants. Attrition at six-month follow-up was 45.6%. Participants attended a median of five sessions. Decreases in PSS favoured the WA-MBP-LS group at posttest and follow-up. FFMQ played a mediating role in PSS reductions. Barriers were disinterest, lack of programming, work overload and absences from work. Facilitators were curiosity, timing, company facilities and audio recordings. The WA-MBP-LS was feasible and effective in reducing stress, but more efforts to improve the practicalities of implementation are desirable

    Personal Values, Attitudes and Travel Intentions Towards Cycling and Walking, and Actual Behavior

    [EN] Personal values are psychological factors scarcely presented in travel behavior studies, despite their importance in determining life choices, decisions and actions. This paper contributes to filling this gap. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of personal values on attitudes, intentions and current cycling and walking. Data regarding personal values, attitudes, intentions and current use of cycling and walking were collected through a web-based survey. Pearson correlations, independent sample non-parametric tests and hierarchical regressions have been used to analyze the information. Reasonably weak but statistically significant direct and indirect effects have been identified between personal values and attitudes towards cycling and walking, intentions and current walking and cycling. Openness to change and self-transcendence values are associated to cycling and walking.     Efficacy of a mindful-eating programme to reduce emotional eating in patients suffering from overweight or obesity in primary care settings: a cluster-randomised trial protocol

    Introduction Little is known about the applicability of mindfulness-based interventions in Spanish adults with overweight/obesity. The objective of the present study protocol is to describe the methods that will be used in a cluster randomised trial (CRT) that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mindfulness eating (ME) programme to reduce emotional eating (EE) in adults with overweight/obesity in primary care (PC) settings. Methods and analysis A CRT will be conducted with approximately 76 adults with overweight/obesity from four PC health centres (clusters) in the city of Zaragoza, Spain. Health centres matched to the average per capita income of the assigned population will be randomly allocated into two groups: ME +treatment as usual (TAU)'' and TAU alone''. The ME programme will be composed of seven sessions delivered by a clinical psychologist, and TAU will be offered by general practitioners. The primary outcome will be EE measured by the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ) at post test as primary endpoint. Other outcomes will be external and restrained eating (DEBQ), binge eating (Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh), eating disorder (Eating Attitude Test), anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), mindful eating (Mindful Eating Scale), dispositional mindfulness (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire) and self-compassion (Self-Compassion Scale). Anthropometric measures, vital signs and blood tests will be taken. A primary intention-to-treat analysis on EE will be conducted using linear mixed models. Supplementary analyses will include secondary outcomes and 1-year follow-up measures; adjusted models controlling for sex, weight status and levels of anxiety and depression; the complier average causal effect of treatment; and the clinical significance of improvements. Ethics and dissemination Positive results of this study may have a significant impact on one of the most important current health-related problems. Approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Regional Authority. The results will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals, and reports will be sent to participants

    A new structure formed by five segments cranks is here presented. By using numerical simulations, we show that a material composed by a 2D periodical distribution of a unit cell based on such structures is able to produce electromagnetic rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism. The symmetry requirements on the unit cell are analyzed in order to obtain a material with homogeneous and isotropic behavior for normal incidence. The material can exhibit several resonant frequencies, where the rotation angle reaches a peak of ±90º and the transmitted wave changes from linear to elliptical polarization.Ingeniería, Industria y Construcció

    Trabajo presentado en el The international liver congress, celebrado en Londres (Inglaterra) del 22 al 26 de junio de 2022.[Background and aims]: Activation of oval cells has been related to hepatocyte injury during chronic liver diseases including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, oval cells plasticity can be affected by the pathological environment. We previously found a protection against hepatocyte cell death by inhibiting protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). Herein, we investigated the molecular and cellular processes involved in the lipotoxic susceptibility in oval cells expressing or not PTP1B. [Method]: Palmitic acid (PA) induced apoptotic cell death in wild-type (Ptpn1+/+) oval cells in parallel to oxidative stress and impaired autophagy. This lipotoxic effect was attenuated in oval cells lacking Ptpn1 that showed up-regulated antioxidant defences, increased unfolded protein response (UPR) signaling, higher endoplasmic reticulum (ER) content and elevated stearoyl CoA desaturase (Scd1) expression and activity. [Results]: These effects in Ptpn1−/− oval cells concurred with an active autophagy, higher mitochondrial efficiency and a molecular signature of starvation, favoring lipid droplet (LD) formation and dynamics. Autophagy blockade in Ptpn1−/− oval cells reduced Scd1 expression, mitochondrial fitness, LD formation and restored lipoapoptosis, an effect also recapitulated by Scd1 silencing. Importantly, oval cells with LDs were found in livers from Ptpn1−/− mice with NAFLD. [Conclusion]: Ptpn1 deficiency restrained lipoapoptosis in oval cells through a metabolic rewiring towards a “starvation-like” fate, favoring autophagy, mitochondrial fitness and LD formation. Dynamic LD-lysosomal interations likely ensured lipid recycling and, overall, these adaptations protect against lipotoxicity. The identification of LDs in oval cells from Ptpn1−/− mice with NAFLD opens new therapeutic perspectives to ensure oval cells viability and plasticity under lipotoxic liver damage

    RF Acquisition System Based on μTCA for Testing of High-Gradient Acceleration Cavities

    The radio frequency (RF) laboratory hosted in the Corpuscular Physics Institute (IFIC) of the University of Valencia is designed to house a high-power and high-repetition-rate facility to test normal conduction RF accelerator cavities in the S-Band (2.9985 GHz) in order to perform R&D activities related to particle accelerator cavities. The system, which manages the entire process of RF signal generation, data acquisition and closed-loop control of the laboratory, is currently based on a modular and compact PXI platform system. This contribution details the development of a platform with similar features, but which is based on open architecture standards at both the hardware and software level. For this purpose, a complete system based on the μTCA platform has been developed. This new system must be able to work with accelerator cavities at other operating frequencies, such as 750 MHz, as well as to explore different options at firmware and software levels based on open-source codes
