Dental profile of a community of recovering drug addicts: biomedical aspects. Retrospective cohort study

    Get PDF
Objectives: to obtain a biomedical oral profile of a community of adult drug addicts in treatment by analysing their dental health, with a view to determining whether the state of their oral health could be attributed primarily to their lifestyle and the direct consequences of drug abuse on their overall condition, rather than to the effects of the drugs used. Experimental Design: the study was conducted under the terms of an agreement between the Complutense University of Madrid's (UCM) Odontology Faculty and the City of Madrid's Substance Abuse Institute. Seventy drug addicts and 34 control group subjects were examined. The study assessed oral hygiene habits, systemic pathology, type of drugs used and the duration of use, oral pathology, oral health indices, risk of caries based on saliva tests, oral candidiasis and periodontal microbiology. Results: statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were found between the test and control groups for practically all the variables analysed. In the drug users group, dental hygiene was wanting, systemic and oral pathology prevailed and the decayed/missing/filled teeth or surface (DMFT/S) indices denoted very poor buccodental health. The saliva tests showed a substantial risk of caries and candidiasis rates were high. By contrast, with a single exception, the microbiological studies detected no statistically significant difference between drug users and control groups periodontal flora. Conclusions: drug-dependent patients had poor oral health and a significant increase in oral pathology, essentially caries and periodontal disease. Their risk of caries was high and the presence of candidiasis was representative of their poor general and oral health. Drug users' poor buccodental condition was more closely related to lifestyle than to drug abuse itself

The objective of this study is to identify differences in the teacher’s interpersonal patterns according to various measures of children´s social competence (sociometric types, self-perception peer acceptance, social competence assessed by the teacher) in children’s first year at primary school. In order to measure these interaction patterns the students answered the Questionnaire on teacher-student interaction (QTI-EP, Spanish version). To measure the social competence measures they used Sociometric Nomination’s Questionnaire, subscale Peer Acceptance of the The Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children (Harter and Pike, 1983) and a rating scale of social competence. All instruments have been developed or adapted by the GREI Group. We find that the trend level, while the estimated social skills are associated with proximity of the teacher behaviors, acceptance by peers is associated with teacher control behavior. The most important result is that students rejected perceive more autonomy/freedom in the behavior of his teachers than favorite and averages students. Different interpretations are discussed and educational implications are pointed ou

Estimates of mpox effective reproduction number in Spain, April-August 2022

    Get PDF
We analysed the transmission of the human mpox virus in Spain by estimating the effective reproduction number of the disease from official surveillance data. Our computations show that this decreased steadily after an initial burst phase, dropping below 1 on July 12, and thus the outbreak was expected to reduce in the following weeks. Differences in trends were found across geographical regions of the country and across MSM and heterosexual populations. This research was partially supported by CIBER (Strategic Action for Monkeypox) – Consorcio Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red – (CB 2021), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU.S

Efficacy of Eggshell Membrane in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent, degenerative joint disease, with knee OA being particularly common and impactful. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy of eggshell membrane (ESM) supplementation in improving joint functionality and reducing pain in individuals with knee OA. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database up to July 2024, following PRISMA guidelines. Seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria, with five included in the meta-analysis. The studies compared ESM to a placebo, evaluating outcomes based on assessment tools such as the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Results indicated that ESM significantly reduced pain and improved functionality, with notable improvements in total WOMAC score (effect size −0.34; 95% CI: −0.56 to −0.13; p < 0.001) and pain subscale (SMD −0.23; 95% CI: −0.42 to −0.04; p < 0.02). The findings support ESM as a promising adjunctive treatment for knee OA, offering a safe, natural supplement to enhance quality of life. Further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these results and explore the long-term effects and mechanisms of ESM.Ciencias de la Alimentació

An innovative antitumor treatment strategy based on the development of a nanodevice for selective release of an inhibitor of the HACD44 interaction is presented. Computational analysis was performed to evaluate the interaction of the designed tetrahydroisoquinoline-ketone derivative (JE22) with CD44 binding site. Cell viability, efficiency, and selectivity of drug release under acidic conditions together with CD44 binding capacity, effect on cell migration, and apoptotic activity were successfully evaluated. Remarkably, the conjugation of this CD44 inhibitor to the nanodevice generated a reduction of the dosis required to achieve a significant therapeutic effect.Junta de Andalucia P18-RT-1679Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) of the University of Granada PR/17/006Spanish Government PID2019.110987RB.I00Health Institute Carlos III (ISCIII) DTS18/00121Junta de Andalucia-FEDER, Ministry of Economy, Knowledge, Companies, and University (FEDER) B-FQM-475-UGR18 PT18-TP-4160Andalusian Regional Government POSTDOC_21_00118UK Research & Innovation (UKRI)Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) EP/L000253/1European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Marie Sklodowska-Curie Grant 754446UGR Research and Knowledge Transfer Fund-Athenea3iSpanish Government FPU 16/0206

A qualitative study about immigrant workers’ perceptions of their working conditions in Spain

    Get PDF
Background: Spain has recently become an inward migration country. Little is known about the occupational health of immigrant workers. This study aimed to explore the perceptions that immigrant workers in Spain had of their working conditions. Methods: Qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study. Criterion sampling. Data collected between September 2006 and May 2007 through semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews, with a topic guide. One hundred and fifty-eight immigrant workers (90 men/68 women) from Colombia (n = 21), Morocco (n = 39), sub-Saharan Africa (n = 29), Romania (n = 44) and Ecuador (n = 25), who were authorised (documented) or unauthorised (undocumented) residents in five medium to large cities in Spain. Results: Participants described poor working conditions, low pay and health hazards. Perception of hazards appeared to be related to gender and job sector. Informants were highly segregated into jobs by sex, however, so this issue will need further exploration. Undocumented workers described poorer conditions than documented workers, which they attributed to their documentation status. Documented participants also felt vulnerable because of their immigrant status. Informants believed that deficient language skills, non-transferability of their education and training and, most of all, their immigrant status and economic need left them with little choice but to work under poor conditions. Conclusions: The occupational health needs of immigrant workers must be addressed at the job level, while improving the enforcement of existing health and safety regulations. The roles that documentation status and economic need played in these informants’ work experiences should be considered and how these may influence health outcomes.Garcia Garcia, Ana Maria, [email protected]
