Parents' involvement in child care: do parental and work identities matter?
The current study draws on identity theory to explore mothers' and fathers' involvement in childcare. It examined the relationships between the salience and centrality of individuals’ parental and work-related identities and the extent to which they are involved in various forms of childcare. A sample of 148 couples with at least one child aged 6 years or younger completed extensive questionnaires. As hypothesized, the salience and centrality of parental identities were positively related to mothers' and fathers' involvement in childcare. Moreover, maternal identity salience was negatively related to fathers' hours of childcare and share of childcare tasks. Finally, work hours mediated the negative relationships between the centrality of work identities and time invested in childcare, and gender moderated this mediation effect. That is, the more central a mother's work identity, the more hours she worked for pay and the fewer hours she invested in childcare. These findings shed light on the role of parental identities in guiding behavioral choices, and attest to the importance of distinguishing between identity salience and centrality as two components of self-structure
Why Major Programs Need Innovation Support Labs: An Example from the Space Shuttle Launch Program at KSC
For over 30 years the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) has processed the Space Shuttle; handling all hands-on aspects from receiving the Orbiter, External Tanks, Solid Rocket Booster Segments, and Payloads, through certification, check-out, and assembly, and ending with fueling, count-down, and launch. A team of thousands have worked this highly complicated, yet supremely organized, process and have, as a consequence, generated an exceptional amount of technology to solve a host of problems. This paper describes the contributions of one team that formed with the express purpose to help solve some of these diverse Shuttle ground processing problems
Complex bounds for multimodal maps: bounded combinatorics
We proved the so called complex bounds for multimodal, infinitely
renormalizable analytic maps with bounded combinatorics: deep renormalizations
have polynomial-like extensions with definite modulus. The complex bounds is
the first step to extend the renormalization theory of unimodal maps to

The SED Machine: a robotic spectrograph for fast transient classification
Current time domain facilities are finding several hundreds of transient
astronomical events a year. The discovery rate is expected to increase in the
future as soon as new surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and
the Large Synoptic Sky Survey (LSST) come on line. At the present time, the
rate at which transients are classified is approximately one order or magnitude
lower than the discovery rate, leading to an increasing "follow-up drought".
Existing telescopes with moderate aperture can help address this deficit when
equipped with spectrographs optimized for spectral classification. Here, we
provide an overview of the design, operations and first results of the Spectral
Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM), operating on the Palomar 60-inch telescope
(P60). The instrument is optimized for classification and high observing
efficiency. It combines a low-resolution (R100) integral field unit (IFU)
spectrograph with "Rainbow Camera" (RC), a multi-band field acquisition camera
which also serves as multi-band (ugri) photometer. The SEDM was commissioned
during the operation of the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) and
has already proved lived up to its promise. The success of the SEDM
demonstrates the value of spectrographs optimized to spectral classification.
Introduction of similar spectrographs on existing telescopes will help
alleviate the follow-up drought and thereby accelerate the rate of discoveries.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figure
Hanbury-Brown--Twiss Analysis in a Solvable Model
The analysis of meson correlations by Hanbury-Brown--Twiss interferometry is
tested with a simple model of meson production by resonance decay. We derive
conditions which should be satisfied in order to relate the measured momentum
correlation to the classical source size. The Bose correlation effects are
apparent in both the ratio of meson pairs to singles and in the ratio of like
to unlike pairs. With our parameter values, we find that the single particle
distribution is too distorted by the correlation to allow a straightforward
analysis using pair correlation normalized by the singles rates. An analysis
comparing symmetrized to unsymmetrized pairs is more robust, but nonclassical

Whole Earth Telescope observations of the hot helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf EC 20058-5234
We present the analysis of a total of 177h of high-quality optical
time-series photometry of the helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf (DBV) EC
20058-5234. The bulk of the observations (135h) were obtained during a WET
campaign (XCOV15) in July 1997 that featured coordinated observing from 4
southern observatory sites over an 8-day period. The remaining data (42h) were
obtained in June 2004 at Mt John Observatory in NZ over a one-week observing
period. This work significantly extends the discovery observations of this
low-amplitude (few percent) pulsator by increasing the number of detected
frequencies from 8 to 18, and employs a simulation procedure to confirm the
reality of these frequencies to a high level of significance (1 in 1000). The
nature of the observed pulsation spectrum precludes identification of unique
pulsation mode properties using any clearly discernable trends. However, we
have used a global modelling procedure employing genetic algorithm techniques
to identify the n, l values of 8 pulsation modes, and thereby obtain
asteroseismic measurements of several model parameters, including the stellar
mass (0.55 M_sun) and T_eff (~28200 K). These values are consistent with those
derived from published spectral fitting: T_eff ~ 28400 K and log g ~ 7.86. We
also present persuasive evidence from apparent rotational mode splitting for
two of the modes that indicates this compact object is a relatively rapid
rotator with a period of 2h. In direct analogy with the corresponding
properties of the hydrogen (DAV) atmosphere pulsators, the stable low-amplitude
pulsation behaviour of EC 20058 is entirely consistent with its inferred
effective temperature, which indicates it is close to the blue edge of the DBV

The Ha luminosity function and star formation rate up to z~1
We describe ISAAC/ESO-VLT observations of the Ha(6563) Balmer line of 33
field galaxies from the Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS) with redshifts
selected between 0.5 and 1.1. We detect Ha in emission in 30 galaxies and
compare the properties of this sample with the low-redshift sample of CFRS
galaxies at z~0.2 (Tresse & Maddox 1998). We find that the Ha luminosity,
L(Ha), is tightly correlated to M(B(AB)) in the same way for both the low- and
high-redshift samples. L(Ha) is also correlated to L([OII]3727), and again the
relation appears to be similar at low and high redshifts. The ratio
L([OII])/L(Ha) decreases for brighter galaxies by as much as a factor 2 on
average. Derived from the Ha luminosity function, the comoving Ha luminosity
density increases by a factor 12 from =0.2 to =1.3. Our results confirm a
strong rise of the star formation rate (SFR) at z<1.3, proportional to
(1+z)^{4.1+/-0.3} (with H_0=50 km/s/Mpc, q_0=0.5). We find an average SFR(2800
Ang)/SFR(Ha) ratio of 3.2 using the Kennicutt (1998) SFR transformations. This
corresponds to the dust correction that is required to make the near UV data
consistent with the reddening-corrected Ha data within the self-contained,

Source Dimensions in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
Recent experiments on pion correlations, interpreted as interferometric
measurements of the collision zone, are compared with models that distinguish a
prehadronic phase and a hadronic phase. The models include prehadronic
longitudinal expansion, conversion to hadrons in local kinetic equilibrium, and
rescattering of the produced hadrons. We find that the longitudinal and outward
radii are surprisingly sensitive to the algorithm used for two-body collisions.
The longitudinal radius measured in collisions of 200 GeV/u sulfur nuclei on a
heavy target requires the existence of a prehadronic phase which converts to
the hadronic phase at densities around 0.8-1.0 GeV/fm. The transverse radii
cannot be reproduced without introducing more complex dynamics into the

Automorphism groups of polycyclic-by-finite groups and arithmetic groups
We show that the outer automorphism group of a polycyclic-by-finite group is
an arithmetic group. This result follows from a detailed structural analysis of
the automorphism groups of such groups. We use an extended version of the
theory of the algebraic hull functor initiated by Mostow. We thus make
applicable refined methods from the theory of algebraic and arithmetic groups.
We also construct examples of polycyclic-by-finite groups which have an
automorphism group which does not contain an arithmetic group of finite index.
Finally we discuss applications of our results to the groups of homotopy
self-equivalences of K(\Gamma, 1)-spaces and obtain an extension of
arithmeticity results of Sullivan in rational homotopy theory
