    On the Absence of the Zeno Effect in Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

    We study the time evolution of decaying particles in renormalizable models of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory. Significant differences between the latter and Non Relativistic Quantum Mechanics are found -in particular, the Zeno effect seems to be absent in such RQFT models. Conventional renormalization yields finite time behavior in some cases but fails to produce finite survival probabilities in others.Comment: Revised version of the paper Time evolution and Zeno effect in relativistic quantum field theory.     Low-lying spectra in anharmonic three-body oscillators with a strong short-range repulsion

    Three-body Schroedinger equation is studied in one dimension. Its two-body interactions are assumed composed of the long-range attraction (dominated by the L-th-power potential) in superposition with a short-range repulsion (dominated by the (-K)-th-power core) plus further subdominant power-law components if necessary. This unsolvable and non-separable generalization of Calogero model (which is a separable and solvable exception at L = K = 2) is presented in polar Jacobi coordinates. We derive a set of trigonometric identities for the potentials which generalizes the well known K=2 identity of Calogero to all integers. This enables us to write down the related partial differential Schroedinger equation in an amazingly compact form. As a consequence, we are able to show that all these models become separable and solvable in the limit of strong repulsion.Comment: 18 pages plus 6 pages of appendices with new auxiliary identitie

    Lectin histochemistry study in the human vas deferens

    The oligosaccharide sequences of glycoconjugates in the normal human vas deferens and the nature of the saccharide linkage were studied by lectin histochem. The cytoplasm of all epithelial cell types (principal cells, basal cells, and mitochondria-rich cells) and luminal contents reacted pos. with WGA, MAA, PNA, DSA, LTA, UEA-I, AAA, and ConA. The reaction was more intense in the stereocilia of principal cells. Cytoplasmic staining was diffuse except for PNA and DSA labeling which was limited to the apical cytoplasm and stereocilia of columnar cells. The cytoplasm of all cell types also reacted diffusely with HPA, although staining was weak and was not obsd. in the stereocilia. Pos. reaction with SBA only was encountered in the stereocilia of principal cells. SNA, LTA, and DBA were unreactive. GNA-labeling showed a granular distribution in the supranuclear cytoplasm of columnar epithelial cells. Reactions with MAA, PNA, DSA, AAA, HPA and SBA disappeared after the β-elimination reaction. Reactions with WGA and UEA-I decreased after ß-elimination or Endo-F digestion. Reactions with ConA and GNA were suppressed by Endo-F digestion. Reactions with PNA, HPA, and SBA increased after desialylation. Of all the lectins that label the luminal contents of the vas deferens, only UEA-I was not found in the luminal contents of seminiferous tubules and epididymis and, thus, this lectin would probably bind to glycoproteins secreted by the vas deferens. The chem. treatments used suggest that this secretion contains fucose residues located in both N- and O-linked oligosaccharides. The other lectins may label secreted proteins, but also structural proteins or proteins reabsorbed from the luminal fluid. The lectin-binding pattern of mitochondria-rich cells in the vas deferens differed from that found in the epididymis

    Evaluation of damping properties of structural glass panes under impact loading

    The latest technology and architectural trends have significantly improved the use of a large variety of glass products in construction which, in function of their own characteristocs, allow to design and calculate structural glass elements under safety conditions. This paper presents the evaluation and analysis of the damping properties of rectangular laminated glass plates of 1.938 m x 0.876 m with different thickness depending on the number of PVB interlayers arranged. By means of numerical simulation and experimental verification, using modal analysis, natural frequencies and damping of the glass plates were calculated, both under free boundary conditions and operational conditions for the impact test equipment used in the experimental program, as the European standard UNE-EN 12600:2003 specifies

    Dual theories for mixed symmetry fields. Spin-two case: (1,1) versus (2,1) Young symmetry type fields

    We show that the parent Lagrangian method gives a natural generalization of the dual theories concept for non p-form fields. Using this generalization we construct here a three-parameter family of Lagrangians that are dual to the Fierz-Pauli description of a free massive spin-two system. The dual field is a three-index tensor T, which dinamically belongs to the (2,1) representation of the Lorentz group. As expected, the massless limit of our Lagrangian, which is parameter independent, has two propagating degrees of freedom per space point.Comment: 10 pages, no figure

    Microbial colonization and resistome dynamics in food processing environments of a newly opened pork cutting industry during 1.5 years of activity

    Artículo versión publicadaBackground: The microorganisms that inhabit food processing environments (FPE) can strongly influence the associated food quality and safety. In particular, the possibility that FPE may act as a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, and a hotspot for the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a concern in meat processing plants. Here, we monitor microbial succession and resistome dynamics relating to FPE through a detailed analysis of a newly opened pork cutting plant over 1.5 years of activity. Results: We identified a relatively restricted principal microbiota dominated by Pseudomonas during the first 2 months, while a higher taxonomic diversity, an increased representation of other taxa (e.g., Acinetobacter, Psychrobacter), and a certain degree of microbiome specialization on different surfaces was recorded later on. An increase in total abundance, alpha diversity, and β-dispersion of ARGs, which were predominantly assigned to Acinetobacter and associated with resistance to certain antimicrobials frequently used on pig farms of the region, was detected over time. Moreover, a sharp increase in the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase- producing Enterobacteriaceae and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcaceae was observed when cutting activities started. ARGs associated with resistance to β-lactams, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, and sulphonamides frequently co-occurred, and mobile genetic elements (i.e., plasmids, integrons) and lateral gene transfer events were mainly detected at the later sampling times in drains. Conclusions: The observations made suggest that pig carcasses were a source of resistant bacteria that then colonized FPE and that drains, together with some food-contact surfaces, such as equipment and table surfaces, represented a reservoir for the spread of ARGs in the meat processing facility.S

    Cold Accretion Disks and Lineless Quasars

    The optical-UV continuum of quasars is broadly consistent with the emission from a geometrically thin optically thick accretion disk (AD). The AD produces the ionizing continuum which powers the broad and narrow emission lines. The maximum AD effective temperature is given by Teff=fmax(Mdot/M^2)^1/4, where M is the black hole mass, Mdot the accretion rate, and fmax is set by the black hole spin a_*. For a low enough value of Mdot/M^2 the AD may become too cold to produce ionizing photons. Such an object will form a lineless quasar. This occurs for a local blackbody (BB) AD with a luminosity Lopt=10^46 erg/s for M>3.6E9 Msun, when a_*=0, and for M>1.4E10 Msun, when a_*=0.998. Using the AD based Mdot, derived from M and Lopt, and the reverberation based M, derived from Lopt and the Hbeta FWHM, v, gives Teff \propto Lopt^-0.13v^-1.45. Thus, Teff is mostly set by v. Quasars with a local BB AD become lineless for v> 8,000 km/s, when a_*=0, and for v> 16,000 km/s, when a_*=0.998. Higher values of v are required if the AD is hotter than a local BB. The AD becoming non-ionizing may explain why line emitting quasars with v>10,000 km/s are rare. Weak low ionization lines may still be present if the X-ray continuum is luminous enough, and such objects may form a population of weak emission line quasars (WLQ). If correct, such WLQ should show a steeply falling SED at lambda<1000A. Such an SED was observed by Hryniewicz et al. in SDSS J094533.99+100950.1, a WLQ observed down to 570A, which is well modeled by a rather cold AD SED. UV spectroscopy of z~1-2 quasars is required to eliminate potential intervening Lyman limit absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM), and to explore if the SEDs of lineless quasars and some additional WLQ are also well fit by a cold AD SED.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    The two pion decay of the Roper resonance

    We evaluate the two pion decay of the Roper resonance in a model where explicit re-scattering of the two final pions is accounted for by the use of unitarized chiral perturbation theory. Our model does not include an explicit ϵ\epsilon or σ\sigma scalar-isoscalar meson decay mode, instead it generates it dynamically by means of the pion re-scattering. The two ways, explicit or dynamically generated, of introducing this decay channel have very different amplitudes. Nevertheless, through interference with the other terms of the model we are able to reproduce the same phenomenology as models with explicit consideration of the ϵ\epsilon meson.Comment: 17 latex pages, 11 eps figures.     New signposts of massive star formation in the S235A-B region

    We report on new aspects of the star-forming region S235AB revealed through high-resolution observations at radio and mid-infrared wavelengths. Using the Very Large Array, we carried out sensitive observations of S235AB in the cm continuum (6, 3.6, 1.3, and 0.7) and in the 22 GHz water maser line. These were complemented with Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera archive data to clarify the correspondence between radio and IR sources. We made also use of newly presented data from the Medicina water maser patrol, started in 1987, to study the variability of the water masers found in the region. S235A is a classical HII region whose structure is now well resolved. To the south, no radio continuum emission is detected either from the compact molecular core or from the jet-like structure observed at 3.3 mm, suggesting emission from dust in both cases. We find two new compact radio continuum sources (VLA-1 and VLA-2) and three separate maser spots. VLA-1 coincides with one of the maser spots and with a previously identified IR source (M1). VLA-2 lies towards S235B and represents the first radio detection from this peculiar nebula that may represent an ionized wind from a more evolved star. The two other maser spots coincide with an elongated structure previously observed within the molecular core in the C34S line. This structure is perpendicular to a bipolar molecular outflow observed in HCO+(1-0) and may trace the associated equatorial disk. The Spitzer images reveal a red object towards the molecular core. This is the most viable candidate for the embedded source originating the outflow and maser phenomenology. The picture emerging from these and previous data shows the extreme complexity of a small (< 0.5 pc) star-forming region where widely different stages of stellar evolution are present.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Real Space Renormalization Group Methods and Quantum Groups

    We apply real-space RG methods to study two quantum group invariant Hamiltonians, that of the XXZ model and the Ising model in a transverse field defined in an open chain with appropiate boundary terms. The quantum group symmetry is preserved under the RG transformation except for the appearence of a quantum group anomalous term which vanishes in the classical case. We obtain correctly the line of critical XXZ models. In the ITF model the RG-flow coincides with the tensor product decomposition of cyclic irreps. of SUq(2)SU_q(2) with q4=1q^4=1.Comment: 7 pages, LATEX, no figure
